President Muhammadu Buhari has described the passing on of South-Africa’s anti-apartheid icon, Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, as a huge loss to Africa.
The President, in a condolence message in Abuja on Monday, noted that the deceased was a woman of uncommon determination, steadfastness and perseverance.
President Buhari’s condolence message is contained in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu.
According to the President, the late Winnnie held aloft the torch of the struggle against institutionalised discrimination even while her ex-husband, the late Madiba, President Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.
President Buhari, on behalf of the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, commiserated with the family of the deceased, the government and people of South Africa.
He urged them to be consoled by the knowledge that the late Winnie Mandela’s contributions to ending apartheid will not be forgotten.
According to him, she remains a pride not only to the African woman, but indeed all Africans.
The President prayed that God Almighty would comfort all those who mourned the departed and grant her soul eternal rest.

Winnie Mandela

Winnie Mandela, the ex-wife of South African anti-apartheid fighter and former president Nelson Mandela, died on Monday at the age of 81, her spokesman said.

She died in a Johannesburg hospital after a long illness, spokesman Victor Dlamini said in a statement.

Winnie Mandela, who was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years, played a key part in the campaign to end white-minority rule but her place in history was also stained by controversy.

“It is with profound sadness that we inform the public that Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday,” said a statement issued by Dlamini, a family spokesman.

“She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones.”

Most of Winnie’s marriage to Nelson was spent apart, with Nelson imprisoned for 27 years, leaving her to raise their two daughters alone and to keep alive his political dream under the repressive white-minority regime.

But her reputation came under damaging scrutiny in the twilight years of apartheid rule.

In 1986, she was widely linked to “necklacing”, when suspected traitors were burnt alive by a petrol-soaked car tyre being put over their head and set alight.

In 1990 the world watched when Nelson Mandela finally walked out of prison — hand in hand with Winnie.

The following year, she was convicted of kidnapping and assault over the killing of Stompie Moeketsi, a 14-year-old boy.

In 1992, the Mandelas separated, and then divorced in 1996, after a legal wrangle that revealed she had had an affair with a young bodyguard.

Ex-President Obasanjo & President Buhari

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again criticised the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, maintaining that the government has failed.

The former president said this on Monday when he received members of the New Nigeria group at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

“The first lesson I learnt in my military training is never reinforce failure; what we have now is failure. Never you reinforce failure, let failure be failure,” he said.

Obasanjo had on Tuesday (January 23, 2018) issued a 13-page statement, criticising President Buhari’s performance and calling for a new movement to salvage the country from its challenges.

He had also warned the President against seeking re-election, alleging that the present government has failed in one of the areas it pitched as its ‘key point of action’ when it assumed office – the anti-corruption fight.

Incompetent Government?

Addressing members of the New Nigeria group at his residence today, the former president rated the present administration as ineffective.

He said, “The truth is this – when you have an ineffective and incompetent government, we are all victims and don’t let anybody deceive you.

“Those of you who are in business, your business could have been better today if we have a competent and effective and performing government.”

Obasanjo also accused the President of having a “poor understanding” of the dynamics of internal politics.

He warned Nigerians not to get carried away by the recent apology tendered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as the reforms of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“This time, for us to make it, we need all hands on deck,” Obasanjo stated. “I have publicly said and I mean it that as a party, neither PDP nor APC can get us there; never mind about reforms and apology and all that,” he said.

Obasanjo further asked the APC to stop giving excuses that it has yet to perform better because it met challenges, noting that the party was aware of the challenges before it wrestled power from the PDP.

He then asked youths in the country to rise up to the challenge of providing the much needed new generation of leadership for the development of Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.

The former president also asked the younger generation to take the bull by the horn, if they must effectively confront “power addicts” in their resolve to achieve the set goals and objectives of providing an alternative in the political leadership of the country.

He stressed the need for a “strong popular grassroots movement” in Nigeria, saying that’s the way to bring about the change, sustainability and stability the nation needs in its democracy

On the flip said, the former president said, “You cannot take PDP as it is, and APC as it is; but they are not all made of evil people, there are good people. I said PDP is leprous hand, APC is leprous hand, but there are some clean fingers in them.

“So, let’s take those clean fingers in them and graft the clean fingers in our own. That is the way to go and if we go that way, we will get there. LR News

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Monday reacted to the list of alleged looters released by the Federal Government, describing it as politically motivated and also an afterthought.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governor tasked the Federal Government to focus on improving the welfare of Nigerian citizens rather than releasing list of corrupt persons.

“The first list of alleged lootersreleased by the government is politically motivated and the second one is an afterthought that was done because Nigerians questioned the first list.

“Nigerians are more interested in their welfare, security of their lives and physical development of the country than tales of corrupt Nigerians’ list,” he said.

Fayose in the statement which was signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, claimed that the PDP never pretended like it had no corrupt member and accused the APC of hiding corrupt practices of its members.

“The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) never pretended to Nigerians that it had corrupt people in its fold and the party never protected them. Today, the party has gone ahead to offload the corrupt elements into the APC.

“A government that reinstated and promoted Abdullahi Maina, who was declared wanted for corrupt practices by the International Police Organisation, (INTERPOL) and dismissed in 2013 for alleged N2.1 billion pension is nothing but a government of plunderers,” Fayose said.

Bizarre things are happening! A young man, ostensibly in his adolescence, has hacked his elder brother and wife to death in Ogun State, over flimsy excuses

Okwudili Okoro's excuse for snuffing life out of his brother and wife was because he failed to settle him on time, after serving him as an apprentice for three years.
Ogun CP, Ahmed Iliyasu

In carrying out the dastardly act, the suspect had to engage the service of one Kenneth, from Sapon in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and they bought two cutlasses, sharpened them to the edges and headed for his brother's abode in Ijako area of Sango-Otta, also in Ogun State.

According to a press release by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, "On getting there, they met the deceased, Azubuike Okoro and his wife, Jacinta, eating. Before the deceased persons could utter a word, the evil men had descended heavily on them and machetted them to death", the statement added.

After committing the heinous crime, the assailants made frantic efforts to escape, of which Kenneth did succeed in. Okwudili's attempts were foiled by residents, following which a report was made by one Joseph Nwagu, at the Sango-Otta Divisional Police Headquarters to the affect that a husband and wife had been hacked to death.

Upon the report, the DPO Sango Division, SP Nasirudeen Oyedele led detectives to the scene, where Okwudili was arrested.

On interrogation, the Ebonyi state-born suspect claimed to have served his deceased elder brother for good three years, and when it was time for him to be settled, his brother kept on posting him from time to time.

He further stated that, when he realized that his brother was not prepared to settle him accordingly, he contracted one Kenneth, who is now on the run, and they both set out to his brother's house where they killed him and the wife.

Oyeyemi, hinted that the two corpses have been deposited at the General Hospital, Otta mortuary for post mortem examination.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Abeokuta for discreet investigation.

The CP has equally directed that the escaped accomplice of the suspect be hunted for and brought to book within the shortest possible time, even as he appealed to residents of the state not to take any threat to their lives lightly, urging them to report such to the police, no matter who is involved. Indian police say a 16-day-old baby boy believed to have been snatched by a monkey has been found drowned in a well.

The infant was sleeping under a mosquito net at his home in the eastern state of Odisha on Friday when he was taken by a rhesus macaque, a species with a reddish-pink face common across India.

“The mother is saying that she saw a monkey take away her child. She raised an alarm but the monkey quickly leaped over the roof and vanished out of sight,” police sub-inspector S.M. Baral told AFP.

“We launched a search along with the forest officers. Yesterday (Sunday) the baby was spotted inside the well dead,” she told AFP.

A post-mortem showed the infant died of asphyxia due to drowning, Baral said.
“Since there were no injury marks on the baby, maybe the monkey dropped him in the well.”

No case was registered as the “family is convinced it’s the monkey that killed their child”, the officer said. The incident happened in the village of Talabasta in Cuttack district.

Media reports said monkeys have become a growing nuisance in the area where the child was taken.

In March last year, schools were closed in Odisha’s Kendrapada district because of frequent monkey attacks, the Hindustan Times said.

The same month a government employee died from head injuries after a monkey leapt at him from a tree, the daily reported.

Though revered in the majority Hindu nation, monkeys are a menace in many cities, trashing gardens and office and residential rooftops and often viciously attacking people for food.

Activists say the invasion of the animal’s natural habitats by urban populations has caused the problem.

EU official has called for action against internet companies that harvest personal data, as Brussels prepares to move against those spreading “fake news” following the Cambridge Analytica revelations.
Sir Julian King, the European commissioner for security, wants “a clear game plan” on how social media companies are allowed to operate during political campaigns to be ready for the 2019 European elections.
The European commission’s digital strategy, to be outlined this month, has been given new impetus by the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which whistleblowers revealed that the data of 50 million Facebook users ended up in the hands of political consultancies for use in Donald Trump’s US election campaign and the UK’s EU referendum.
In a letter seen by the Financial Times, King wrote that the “psychometric targeting activities” such as those of the data analysis company are just a “preview of the profoundly disturbing effects such disinformation could have on the functioning of liberal democracies”.
King, the UK’s final European commissioner, is calling for limits on the harvesting of personal information for political purposes, more transparency on the internal algorithms that internet platforms use to promote stories, as well as disclosure by technology companies of who funds sponsored content on their websites.
His ideas are set out in a letter to Mariya Gabriel, the digital economy commissioner, who is leading the EU’s response to fake news.
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has already promised a law to ban fake news during election campaigns.
On Monday, Malaysia became one of the first countries in the world to introduce such a law, despite being urged by the UN not to rush the measures. Under the legislation, offenders could be sentenced to up to six years in prison. It has prompted fears of a clampdown on free speech before a general election.
King has previously called on the EU to redouble its efforts to debunk “pro-Kremlin disinformation”, and cited the work of the EU’s counter-propaganda unit

The Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association has come down heavily on the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi, for allegedly adopting the title of an Emir and for wearing a turban instead of the Yoruba traditional cap or the crown.

The National Coordinator of the YYSA, Mr. Olalekan Hammed, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday, said the Oluwo’s action could precipitate crisis in the future if not checked now.

The monarch has been dressing like an emir and wearing turban occasionally and he again wore the turban  on Saturday when he installed Yakub Abdul-Baqi Mohammed as the Waziri of Yorubaland in his palace in Iwo.

He installed the Waziri contrary to the warning given to him by the League of Imams and Alfas in South-West, Edo and Delta states that he had no such right to confer an Islamic title which cut across the entire South-West on anybody.

The YYSA leader said, “If there is animosity among the Obas, he should work towards resolving it; he cannot just take the title of an Emir. What he is doing now is contrary to the tradition and history of the throne he occupies. Oluwo is not an Islamic title, it is a cultural title.

“We have had a Christian as the Oluwo in the past (from 1958 to 1982). What if another Christian becomes Oluwo in the future? Will he be allowed to change the title to that of evangelist or what or will he be referred to as an Emir of Iwo? It is not proper. Even the Oluwo is not in the position to install anybody the Waziri of Yorubaland because it is an Islamic title. The League of Imams has that power.

“As the Oluwo of Iwo land, he his restricted to Iwo land. Obas are custodians of culture and traditions and Oluwo should behave like one. Wearing a turban is like importing the culture of some other people into Yorubaland. He should wear the crown or Yoruba cap. What he is doing is contrary to Yoruba culture and he should lay a good example for the youths.”

However, the Oluwo has denied adopting the title of an Emir contrary to media reports.

Speaking through his media aide, Mr. Ali Ibrahim, in a statement issued on Sunday, the Oluwo explained that he had never dropped the title of an Oba for an Emir.

The statement read, “Oluwo has never adopted the Emir title. He only said he could also be called an Emir by the Hausa and ardent Muslims. Oba Akanbi is an Oba for the nation with special attachment to the Yoruba. He promotes Yoruba culture to the admiration of many youths. Just because of Oluwo dress code today, many children are attracted to Yoruba culture of wearing the aso ofi.

“I said so to integrate the Nigerian nation as an indivisible entity, all working tools are available for the integration and unity of our dear country. I`ve visited the North several times, core Hausa hardly pronounce Yoruba words correctly. They called me emir when I am with them. Is there anything wrong in answering such? Even, the Hausa in Iwo here call me emir. Will I stop them from addressing me as such? No, I am a father to the nation being a first-class paramount ruler.”
