Charly Boy

Maverick activist, Charly Boy, has said that he will lead a peaceful protest to the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) if the commission shifts the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.
Charly Boy said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
NAN recalls that Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman, early on Saturday, Feb 16, announced the postponement of the  polls to Feb 23 because of “logistics and operational problems”.
The Commission also shifted the state Governorship and legislative elections as well as Council polls in the Federal Capital Territory from March 2 to March 9.
However, reactions have continued to trail the action of the electoral umpire with many Nigerians, especially political players, calling for the resignation of the chairman.
Charly Boy, the Convener of Ourmumudondo Movement, however, noted that he saw the inability of Nigeria to hold the polls on the scheduled date as ‘an act of God’.
He however warned that any further shift of the elections, especially the presidential poll, would be protested by his group.
“I want to believe that what happened on Saturday is some kind of divine intervention, no matter how much things have become so politicised in our environment.
“However, if there is another postponement, we will go to INEC office to tell us what is happening and whether they are truly independent or not.
“Unless they want to set fire on an already tensed situation in the country, I see no reason why INEC should postpone the elections again.
“Nigerian politicians are very desperate to get and hold unto power and it is part of my nationalistic engagement to speak against mindless political criminality in the polity, “he said.
Charly Boy urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to come out and vote for leaders of their choice in all the elections.
The  68 -year-old activist, who described himself as the ‘President of all frustrated Nigerians’, however, expressed disappointment that the youth failed to rally support for  young candidates to realise the “Not Too Young To Run” dream.
He explained that they had earlier initiated the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together, a coalition of young Nigerians vying for office of president, to produce and rally support for one candidate.
“It is my duty to encourage every young Nigerian to come together to form a formidable front to enable them take power from the recycled leaders.
“It is a bit sad that we could not realise that this time around but I urge people to vote who they like because that will form the basis of how we transit in 2023.
“ APC and PDP  are like  the devil and the deep blue sea and I do not want any youth to vote for them, whether one is lesser evil or not, evil is evil.
“With that, we would know who are popular candidates among the young breed and we shall know and keep records of the number of votes they can muster,” he said.
Charly Boy stressed that young people needed to achieve a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s political history and urged them to be united in common struggle for a better Nigeria.
He lamented that Nigerian youths were being deprived of opportunities in the midst of plenty because of bad leadership over the years.
“There is no need an average Nigerian should be angry, my people need to be free from the grip of bad leadership.
“However, I know that the cycle of evil is winding up and we want to see that it happens finally in 2023,” he said.

An outbreak of Bird flu also known as Avian Influenza has hit Plateau state, killing at least 3,900 birds.
Dr Spak Shaset, the Chief Veterinary Officer of the State told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Jos, that the outbreak has affected two farms in Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas of the state.
“Sometimes in January, when we heard of an outbreak of the dreaded disease in some part of Bauchi state, we knew Plateau is at risk.
“I immediately summoned our divisional health officers in the 17 councils, and in less than 72 hours after we met, report got to us of suspected cases in some farms in the state.
“We immediately swung into action and took sample from the farms to our labs and it was confirmed it is bird flu.
“Without hesitation, we went and depopulated the farms to avoid further spread of the disease to other farms.
“More than 3,900 birds were destroyed; 2,900 from the farm in Jos South and 1,000 in the farm in Jos North,” he said.
Shaset said the two farms were decontaminated, disinfected and quarantined to avoid further spread to nearby farms and have other poultry farmers incur loses.
The official said the government had taken positive and stringent steps to avert the further spread of the disease to other areas of the state, which if left unattended to, could also transmit into human beings, which according to him, could be very disastrous.
Shaset charged poultry farmers and live bird marketers to step up bio-security and hygiene measures within and around their farms and markets.
He advised Plateau residents to avoid the sale, slaughtering and consumption of sick and dead birds to avoid being infected.

US Senator, Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders, the US independent senator from Vermont whose 2016 presidential campaign helped energize the progressive movement and reshaped the Democratic party, has entered the 2020 race for the White House.

In an email to supporters on Tuesday morning, Sanders, a self-styled Democratic socialist who spent much of his nearly 30-year congressional career as an outsider on the political fringe, cast his candidacy as a way to accomplish the mission he started three years ago when he ran against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

“Together, you and I and our 2016 campaign began the political revolution,” he said. “Now, it is time to complete that revolution and implement the vision that we fought for.”

Sanders, 77, running as a Democrat again, believes he can prevail in a crowded and diverse field that includes several female and minority candidates, then beat Donald Trump, whom he called in the email “the most dangerous president in modern American history”.

A report by a Commons committee has detailed Facebook's use of an application to "spy" on users.

The cross-party group said that Facebook used its Onavo virtual private network (VPN) app to gather information on competitors.

The MPs claim Facebook "intentionally and knowingly violated both data privacy and anti-competition laws".

The report, which is more than 100 pages long, also details the influence of fake news on the site in elections.

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee wrote that through the use of Onavo, which was billed as a way to give users an extra layer of security, Facebook could "collect app usage data from its customers to assess not only how many people had downloaded apps, but how often they used them".

The report added: "This knowledge helped them to decide which companies were performing well and therefore gave them invaluable data on possible competitors. They could then acquire those companies, or shut down those they judged to be a threat."

A graph the committee includes in the report shows an analysis of data collected with Onavo, detailing how commonly apps were used by Facebook owned and rival services.
