Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has again faulted those linking him and Senate President Bukola Saraki to the robbery incident that claimed many lives in Offa.

The governor condemned the action during an interview on Channels Television’s Roadmap 2019, a special political programmed aired on Mondays.

“It is only laughable to see and hear that I would be involved, or the Senate President would be involved in a process that will be counterproductive to what we are putting resources in, to ensure that the lives and activities of people change for the better,” he said.

Governor Ahmed wondered how such allegation could be made against him and the Senate President, having spent many years trying to improve service delivery and ensuring that democracy dividends reach the people.

He faulted the situation where people make very serious statements to indict senior citizens on a national television instead of focusing on how to nip the crime in the bud.

“I think we should begin to look at more seriously how we should begin to take security issues because as it were, the economy of Kwara is highly dependent on commercial activities,” the governor said.

He further explained that the state government had to re-engineer its internally generated revenue collection in Offa after the incident had slowed down the economic activities in the community.

Governor Ahmed, however, stressed that it was time to look more seriously at those issues that would change the economic situation in Nigeria and reform the security position to give more confidence and comfort to the people.

Several persons were killed when about dozens of gunmen raided some commercial banks on April 5 in Offa town, the headquarters of Offa Local Government Area of the state.

The suspected armed robbers were said to have killed at least 30 people and reportedly attacked a police station in the area during the incident.

Some of the suspects were later arrested after a thorough investigation by the police, leading to the indictment of the Senate President and the governor by some of the said culprits.

Senator Saraki and Governor Ahmed have since denied any connection with the suspects and condemned the allegations as baseless.

Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Jimoh Moshood, revealed this in a statement on Sunday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He said the police boss has directed that a robust and elaborate security arrangement be implemented in Ekiti to ensure peaceful, credible, free and fair election.

According to Moshood, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Department of Operations has been deployed to the state and would be assisted by an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), four Commissioners of Police (CPs), eight Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), and 18 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), while each senatorial district would be manned by a CP.

The DIG would implement and coordinate the security operations, as well as supervise the deployment of security personnel for the elections throughout the 2451 polling units/voting points, 177 Wards and the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.

The Force spokesman disclosed that those deployed include personnel of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Unit, Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Special Protection Unit (SPU), Anti-Bomb Squad (EOD), Conventional Policemen, Armament Unit, FCIID, and the sniffer dogs section.

He noted that four policemen and two security operatives from other agencies would be on duty at each polling unit throughout the state while the PMF to be headed by a very senior officer would provide security at the RAC, Super RAC and collation centres.

The statement read, “Two (2) Patrol Surveillance Helicopters, Five (5) additional Armoured Personnel Carriers, Ten (10) Armoured Personnel Vehicles and Two Hundred and Fifty (250) Police patrol vehicles are deployed throughout the state, including difficult terrains.

“Other security and safety agencies who are members of Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in the state are also deployed to complement the Nigeria Police Force during the election.

“As part of additional measures to guarantee a peaceful and credible election, the IGP will on 9th July, 2018 attend a stakeholder’s and peace accord meeting of all the Thirty Five (35) political parties participating in the election and their flag bearers, INEC officials, election observers and other accredited stakeholders in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State,”.

Moshood noted that while the police officers and other security operatives deployed for the elections are under strict Instructions to be polite and civil, they would be firm in the discharge of their duties and other responsibilities.

He said they would provide adequate security for the electorates, INEC officials, movement of election materials, accredited election observers, and other individuals and bodies that have statutory roles in the conduct of the election at various locations throughout the period of the election.

The police spokesman added that special security identification tags would be worn by all security personnel deployed for the election and no personnel of any security agency would be allowed to move to any other location other than where they have been deployed throughout the election period.

He also warned security personnel attached to politicians to desist from escorting their principals to polling units and collation centres during the election, saying any deviant security detail would be apprehended and dealt with accordingly.

Moshood revealed that the IGP has directed the Police Commissioners in Ondo, Osun, Kwara, Kogi, Ogun, Edo and Oyo states to be on red-alert with their personnel.

The CPs were directed to deploy personnel massively within areas neighbouring to Ekiti, to prevent crimes, hoodlums and miscreants and other unwanted elements or groups from infiltrating from their states to Ekiti to disrupt the poll.

Similarly, the police have announced that the restriction of vehicular movement in and out of Ekiti would commence from 12-midnight of Friday, July 13, till the end of the election.

They also advised travellers and other road users to make use of alternative routes while those on essential duties on a genuine course would be granted passage.

The statement added, “All the Thirty-Five (35) participating political parties and their leadership and supporters, traditional rulers, community leaders, parents and guardians, are advised to warn and prevail on their members, supporters, subjects, children and wards to be law abiding and not allow themselves to be used to cause disturbance of the peace or disruption of the election/electoral process anywhere in the State.

“The full weight of the law will be applied on any person or group of persons found violating the electoral act or indulging in any criminal conduct capable of causing violence before, during and after the election.

“Threat assessments have been carried out by the police in Ekiti State and all identified flashpoints and troubled prone areas have been addressed. However, the Force will not hesitate to deal decisively in accordance with the electoral act and other enabling laws with any individual(s) or group(s), no matter how highly placed, whose utterances or conduct is contrary to the electoral act or that can incite disturbance of public peace, law, and order before, during or after the election.

“The electorates and the general public in Ekiti State who observe any untoward incident or crime can reach the Joint Operation Room for the election through the following phone numbers; 08062335577, 08035925554, 08081761702.

“The Inspector General of Police wishes to assure the electorates, the contestants and all law-abiding citizens in Ekiti State of adequate security throughout the election. They are hereby enjoined to feel free to go out and cast their votes without any fear or apprehension. The IGP implores them to cooperate with the police personnel in the discharge of their duties.”

Gernot Rohr, Nigeria Super Eagles’ coach,  is not thinking of resigning after failing to take the team beyond the group stage in the FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.
Rohr dismissed the possibility of quitting  while reacting to a question by South Africa’s sports journalist, David Kappel who writes for Soccer Laduma.
According to Sports Village Square, the journalist had asked: “It sounds like you are still positive despite the World Cup exit. Did the thought of resigning ever cross your mind?’”
Possibly the question arose following a trend in Nigerian football after each World Cup outing. In the previous five World Cup outings, all the coaches, except Stephen Keshi, left the team after the match.
Sports Village Square recalls that even Keshi spoke about his resignation at the post match press conference in Brasilia after the Super Eagles were ousted by France four years ago.
Even though he continued for sometime, it was obvious he was merely marking time before he  was finally axed.
Rohr told Soccer Laduma that resignation was out of point. “When you have a team playing this good, beating Iceland who are number 20 in the world while we are number 49; a team that had Argentina, number six in the world close to a knockout; who would think of resigning from this team?
“You will need to question your own work. No, it is out of question for me right now.”
The 65 year-old German was appointed manager of the Nigerian team in August 2016.
Before then, he had coached Niger, Burkina Faso  and Gabon  teams and also Etoile Sportive du sahel, at the club level in 2009.
His first coaching experience with Africa’s national teams was in 2010, when he was appointed in February of that year as successor to  French coach Alain Giresse . He was then manager of Ligue 2 team FC Nantes, the job he got after he was sacked by Etoile. He did not stay long in FC Nantes as he was fired in December of 2009.
He became manager of Niger national football team in September 2012, but resigned in October 2014.
On 22 December 2015, he was sacked by Burkina Faso national football team as manager.
Before coming to Africa, Rohr in 1996,  managed Girondins Bordeaux to the UEFA Cup final, where they lost to Bayern Munich over two legs, 0–2 away and 1–3 at home. Bordeaux’s run to the final included a famous 3–0 win over AC Milan in the quarter-finals. From October 1998 until April 1999 he was sports director of Eintracht Frankfurt.
Rohr registered the distinction making the Super Eagles the first African team to qualify on 7 October 2017,  for the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a 1–0 victory over Zambia.
