PTAD’s Executive Secretary, Sharon Ikeazor

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has announced plans to initiate a contributory social health insurance scheme for pensioners in the country.
PTAD’s Executive Secretary, Sharon Ikeazor, announced this in a document made available in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ikeazor said the contributory scheme would be a social protection programme for the pensioners.
She said the scheme would allow pensioners to make stratified contributions commensurate with their earnings into a single fund pool that would be used to guarantee them access to defined health services.
The PTAD boss said the pensioners would also be entitled to drug refills for chronic diseases, eye care services and focused geriatric services.
She explained that the plan to initiate the scheme was hinged on the constraint to accessing health services which revolved around out of pocket payment for health services and its impact on household funds.
“This impact can be even more marked among pensioners, who relatively have a higher demand for health services and typically small earnings from their pensions,” she said.
According to her, health services to the pensioners within the scheme will be domiciled at primary and secondary health centres in the locality of the pensioners.
She said it would further strengthen the ability of pensioners to access the services without the added constraint of high transportation costs to access services from centres in the major cities.
She explained that the health insurance programme would also task the service delivery centres with the verification of pensioners within the political ward or local government areas every quarter, as a condition for continuing the services.
“In essence, this health insurance programme will allow the pensioners gain more mileage from their meagre pensions, through a pooled health financing mechanism, whilst improving ease of verification of life for PTAD.
“This is a worthy legacy programme to complement the strengthened digital registration and database of pensioners. “
She said given the national guidelines, and to facilitate implementation, beneficiaries of contributory health insurance scheme would require dedicated methods of identification linked to a central database that facilitated record keeping and easy identification by health service providers.
She expressed the hope that the private sector and retailers in the health sector would  key into the proposed initiative. NAN/LR News

Google has been sued for allegedly discriminating against conservative white men in a class action lawsuit filed by two former engineers.
The duo say they want to represent all staff discriminated against due to their “perceived conservative political views, male gender and Caucasian race”.
James Damore, fired last year over a controversial memo, is behind the suit.
His memo argued there were few women in top jobs at the firm due to biological differences between men and women.
Mr Damore and David Gudeman, another former engineer at the firm, filed the suit at Santa Clara Superior Court in California.
A spokesperson for Google said they “look forward to defending against Mr Damore’s lawsuit in court.”
A separate case filed by three women who used to work at Google, alleging it pays women less than men for comparable work, was dismissed last month, but has been refiled in an amended form.
Mr Damore and Mr Gudeman claim in their lawsuit that Google employs illegal hiring quotas to fill posts with women and minorities.
They accuse the company of failing to protect employees with conservative views, including supporting US President Donald Trump.
Their lawsuit says the men were “openly threatened and subjected to harassment and retaliation” at the company, which they describe as an “ideological echo chamber”.
It says Google “openly shames” managers who fail to meet goals, even booing them at meetings.
Mr Damore’s memo caused fierce debate about free speech in the workplace and diversity in Silicon Valley.
The memo’s focus on perceived biological differences between men and women proved highly controversial.
In the lawsuit, Mr Damore said the memo was intended to remain internal and had been written in response to a request for feedback from a diversity and inclusion summit he had attended.
When Mr Damore lost his job, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said portions of the memo violated the company’s code of conduct and crossed “the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace”.
But Mr Damore said he had received “many personal messages from fellow Googlers expressing their gratitude” for speaking out.
Google is also under investigation by the US Department of Labor over whether its pay practices fall foul of equal pay laws.

Some 200 members of one of Italy’s most infamous mafia groups were arrested in an operation in Italy and Germany, police said on Tuesday.
A statement from the para-military Carabinieri police said the operation had dismantled a major clan of the ‘Ndrangheta organised crime group, which is based in the southern Calabria region.
Police said the operation was carried out jointly with police in Germany.
They said the clans of the Farao and Marincola families had infiltrated businesses in both countries, particularly those involved in wine, food, garbage collection and funeral services.
A number of public officials were suspected of corruption, the statement said, without specifying if they were in Italy or both countries.
Some 50 million euros (59.79 million dollars) in assets were seized.
Details of the operation were due to be released at a news conference later on Tuesday in the southern city of Catanzaro, where anti-mafia prosecutors had spearheaded the investigation. (Reuters/LR News)

Edo CP. Johnson Kokumo & Gov. Godwin Obaseki

Two brothers have been arrested for the alleged murder of their 67-year-old grandmother in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The brothers were alleged to have killed the 67-year-old woman, one Grace Ovbiebo, for money ritual in connivance with two other relatives.

The incident was said to have occurred on Asowota Street, Ohovbe quarters, in Benin, the state capital.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, confirmed the arrest on Monday.

“The two boys killed their grandmother, but the ritual aspect is not part of our investigations,” Kokumo added.

It was learnt that the suspects, identified as Dickson Oluka and Salaye Oluka, had consulted a native doctor about their desire to become wealthy.

They were said to have been advised by the native doctor to strap live tortoises around their backs and kill a close relative, with the assurance that they would become rich afterwards.

It was learnt that the suspects, upon conspiring among themselves, held their grandmother and smashed her head against a wall.

Ovbiebo was said to have died instantly.

It was gathered that the two other suspects, Martins Oluka and Austin Enayi, had been at large since December 12, 2017, when the alleged crime was committed.

However, the police said they had launched a manhunt for the two fleeing suspects.

Brig. Gen. Sani Usman

The Nigerian Army has said a new trick used by the Boko Haram insurgents to evade air detection and bombardments by troops was to roof their buildings with “mud and coated sugar.”

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, said this on Monday, noting that the military had uncovered the trick and would soon apprehend more Boko Haram commanders.

The army spokesman said a factional Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, had been revealed in a terrible state of health and was no more a threat to the troops.

Usman said, “The Boko Haram terrorists’ trick of evading air raids has been uncovered by the Theatre Command of the Operation Lafiya Dole. The terrorists perfected the survival trick to continue their nefarious activities through their enticement, deceit and propaganda. These tricks were decoded through credible intelligence.

“The insurgents deployed special roofing techniques to avoid air detection and bombardment from the Nigerian Air Force. They resort to roofing their buildings and hideouts with a mixture of coated sugar and mud so that the roof will not reflect when there is sunshine. Decisive measures have been taken to deal with this deception.

“There is also no doubt that the main Boko Haram terrorists group factional leader, Abubakar Shekau, is in a terrible state of health and not much a threat. He is waiting for his waterloo. We reliably learnt that some misguided persons, particularly youths, are getting conscripted into the sect through enticements.

“The factions have recruiters all over the country, especially in the North-East. However, their clearing house for such conscripts is at Potiskum, Yobe State. Efforts are ongoing to track those involved.”

Gov. Rauf Aregbesola & Senator Iyiola Omisore

The Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf. Aregbesola, has accused a former Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore, of defaulting in tax payment from 2014 till date.

According to a statement in Osogbo on Monday by Aregbesola’s media aide, Mr. Sola Fasure, the governor said this at a dinner.

Aregbesola, the statement added, stated that Omisore last paid a tax of N25, 000.00 to the state in 2013.

Aregbesola said the former deputy governor, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, was not competent to criticise his administration because Omisore and the PDP allegedly plunged the state and the country into socio-economic and political coma.

Aregbesola accused  Omisore of  being mischievous, saying it was unfortunate that he (Omisore) had not learned from “his self-inflicted political sojourn and travail.”

Aregbesola said, “I can say it without any form of equivocation that Omisore is a shameless person who doesn’t know what is next in his life. He is a shameless liar because all he accused us of are those things they failed to do while they were in government.

“I want him to ask himself the impact he made on the lives of the people of the state, particularly his constituents, while he was in the Senate?

“He couldn’t complete tangible projects, but rather nursed his insatiable appetite for wealth accumulation. Most of the projects we did in Osun East Senatorial District today ought to have been done years back if the PDP-led government then did the needful,” he stressed.

Aregbesola added, “As of today, he (Omisore) still owes Osun government backlog of taxes. The last tax of N25,000 he paid was in 2013, meaning that he is a tax defaulter.

But Omisore while reacting in a text message said the claims of the governor were unfounded and ridiculous. He stated that he had been paying his taxes correctly, adding that he did not need to be reminded of his obligations to the state.

He said the ‘baseless allegations’ raised by the governor were not an answer to the alleged recklessness of the administration which he claimed had plunged the state into a debt bondage which would take about 25 years to repay.

He said, “To put the record straight, I have paid my personal tax as and when due as the principal partner of the Mechelec Consultants Limited based in Abuja. So, who descend to personal issues? I maintain that your (Aregbesola) government is the most corrupt in Nigeria since independence.

“What has tax got to do with budget and bankruptcy in Osun? It is because that he could not give a proper account of his almost eight years in Osun…

“Is that why he cannot pay wages and salaries of workers, including pensioners? That is a poser for him. He does not know what to say again.”

Some armed robbers have invaded the Ajah home of comic Nollywood actor, Mr. John Okafor, aka Mr Ibu, stealing  his property.

The victim, who was away at the time of the incident, was said to have left behind his wife, grandmother, housemaid and children, who were sleeping when the hoodlums struck.

Latest Reality Metro learnt that the assailants gained entry through an opening in the house, which was under renovation.

They were said to have held Okafor’s relatives hostage as they took time to steal cash sums in the house, as well as 12 wristwatches, laptops, phones, jewellery, shoes and clothes, among others.

Our correspondent was told that the assailants took away all the Automated Teller Machine cards in the house, after forcefully obtaining the PINs from Okafor’s wife.

The incident was said to have been reported to the police at the Ajah division.

Okafor’s manager, who wants to be identified only as Chochoo, confirmed the robbery to our correspondent on Monday, adding that it occurred around 3am on Saturday.

He noted that although nobody was injured, the assailants emptied the house of all valuables.

He said, “He (Okafor) was renovating his house and the burglar-proof bar that was not fixed that day was where they came in through. Twelve wristwatches, money, all the phones and laptops in the house, shoes and clothes were stolen. I cannot place a value on the stolen property; just three of the wristwatches are worth N6.5m. They broke into his room as well. They took everything in his room.

“When it happened, we had travelled to the east for some New Year social functions. I guess those people knew none of the men was around. His wife, children, grandmother and maid were at home. The robbers were more than six in number.

“They took the wife’s ATM cards and forced her to release the PINs. Since they left with the phones in the house, she does not have anything to get debit alerts. We have blocked the accounts today (Monday). But since the incident happened on Saturday and banks don’t open on Saturdays and Sundays, we don’t know what could have happened in the intervening period.”

Chochoo told our correspondent that although suspects had been arrested based on some blurred black and white images from the Closed-Circuit Television cameras in the house, their culpability had yet to be established.

He explained that the primary concern of the family was the recovery of the stolen property.

Okafor was reported to have said that he suspected that the hoodlums were hired to kill him, adding that they asked for his whereabouts during the one hour attack.

He also reportedly said the N1m cash meant for the renovation of his house was stolen.

He valued four of the 12 stolen wristwatches at N8m, saying the others cost between N300,000 to N500,000.

The comic actor added that his wife’s gold and jewellery were stolen, noting that four phones he left in the house were taken away.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident, adding that two of the suspects had been arrested.

He said, “Two of the suspects were arrested by our men from the FESTAC division, who were on patrol at the time of the incident. Two others escaped. The suspects have been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, while investigations are ongoing. Efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects.”
