Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has declared as “an act of illegality”, the continous sealing of the office of Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) by the Nigeria Police.
Ruling on a motion filed by the Nigerian Police, seeking the court to grant it leave to seal the office of the Corps, the Judge ordered the Police to immediately unseal the office.
The judgemnet is coming over two months after Justice Gabriel Kolawole of Federal High Court in Abuja ordered immediate opening of the National Headquarters of the Corps.
The corporate headquarters of the Corps located at No 57 Iya Abubakar Crescent, off Alex Ekwueme way, opposite Jabi Lake, Jabi, Abuja, had been under lock and keys since 28th February, 2017, when the Police raided the premises and arrested the National Commandant, Amb (Dr.) Dickson Akoh and 49 other officers.
The Nigerian Police had, however, denied sealing the office before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Counsel to the Nigerian Police in the ongoing amended criminal charge against Akoh, JC Idachaba, had on Nov. 8 2017, moved a motion, asking the court for an order to seal the National Headquarters of PCN.
The motion of notice which was filed on Oct. 4 2017, has 16-paragraph affidavit deposed to by one Sergeant Philip Tsumba and 17-paragraph written address.
Idachaba denied the fact that the office had been sealed ab initio, saying the Defendant Applicant could not produce any evidence to compel the court to believe that the office was sealed.
On his part, Counsel to the PCN, John Ochogwu, prayed the court to help unseal the office as his client, the PCN had suffered hardship since the office was sealed 11 months ago.
The counsel had also filed a motion on notice on Oct. 62017, seeking an order of the court to unseal the Peace Corps office.

The motion which was supported by a 20-paragraph affidavit deposed to by one Barr. Ogar Christopher Ogar with written addresses and 4 exhibits, said the Nigerian Police had sealed the Peace Corps office since the day it raided the premises on Feb. 28 2017, when the National Commandant of the Corps, Akoh and 49 others were arrested.
Barrister Ochogwu tendered picture evidences, showing the office was under lock and keys with heavy presence of the Nigerian Police and Police Van.
He prayed the court to mandate an officer of the court to visit the said office with the view to ascertaining the veracity or otherwise of the claim that the Police sealed the office.
Delivering his ruling on the application by the Police to seal the already sealed Peace Corps Office, Justice Tsoho, on Monday declared that the applicant was seeking an order to “legalise the illegality” it has committed 11 months ago.
He berated the Nigerian Police for not approaching the court to seek order to seal-off the Peace Corps office before taking it under lock and keys.
The Judge therefore, declared the continuous siege on Peace Corps office illegal and ordered that “the office be unsealed forthwith”.
Reacting to the judgement, the National Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dickson Akoh said the Police had no option than to obey the court judgement.
“If the Police wants to continue to prosecute criminal cases in court or press charges against anyone in the court of law, then it must obey court judgments,” Akoh said.

Suspects

A suspect, Ridwan Omole, has denied allegations of robbery against him by the police, saying he is only a cult member.

The suspect, however, said he always shared loot with a robbery gang each time they had a successful operation.

The 21-year-old spoke in a statement he made to operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command.

According to the police, a three-man robbery gang consisting of one Taiwo Lawal (23), Kabiru Ajiboye (24) and Seyi Ayetoba (27), had been arrested on Thursday during a botched operation in the Somolu area of Lagos State.

The men were about attacking a motorcycle rider and his passenger in the area when their intending victims raised the alarm.

They were reportedly chased and apprehended by some residents who handed them over to a patrol team of the RRS.

The suspects were said to have confessed to the police that the gun with them belonged to Omole.

He was then arrested in his parents’ house in the Ajah area.

Omole, who allegedly confessed to be a member of the Aiye Confraternity, said he bought the gun from a former schoolmate for self-defence.

He said, “I bought the gun from a former schoolmate for N9,000. I bought it in September 2017. I got the gun because of rival cult members who were disturbing me in my street. They knew I belonged to Aiye Confraternity and wanted me to join their camp.

“Because my friend, Ayetoba, knew that I had a gun at home, he usually came to borrow it. He later requested that I follow him for a job. I asked him the nature of the business and he said robbery and okada snatching. I told him that I couldn’t do such a thing.

“However, whenever he borrowed the gun and went out for an operation, he returned to give me money. On three occasions, he had given me money. First, he gave me N10,000; the second time was N10,000 and an Android phone; and the third was N2,000. He said that operation wasn’t smooth.”

Ayetoba, who was the leader of the gang, said he was initiated into robbery by one Tunde, whom he met in the Mushin area of Lagos.

“Tunde was the leader of my previous gang. Whatever we stole, we sold in Mushin. It was Tunde who taught me all the tricks I used during operations. He was arrested sometime last year. I didn’t go out with him that day.

“I formed my own gang with Taiwo (Lawal) and Kabiru (Ajiboye) and took the gun from Ridwan (Omole). Each time we went on an operation, I paid him for hiring the gun from him. We live on the same street and belong to the same confraternity.

“The areas where we have operated included Ajah, Costain, Onipanu, Yaba, and the National Stadium. We sold stolen motorcycles for between N30,000  N60,000,” he said.

The RRS said it recovered from the gang a locally-made pistol with a 9mm live cartridge and a jackknife.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said the suspects were cooperating with the police, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, lauded the participation  of members of the community in the arrest.

“The case has been transferred to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation,” he added.

Acting Chairman, RMAFC, Mr. Umar Abba Gana

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission have backed the reintroduction of subsidy on petroleum products by the Federal Government through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The Acting Chairman, RMAFC, Mr. Umar Gana, said given that the nation was just recovering from recession, the best option was to pay subsidy on petroleum products rather than increase the pump prices.

Gana said increasing the pump price of petrol at a delicate time that the nation was recovering from recession could reverse the gains that the economy had made, adding that the best option was for the Federal Government to bear subsidy on the product.

He stated, “The commission’s position will always be a realistic one. The cost of delivery of fuel at the pump has risen because of factors of production. We may have no choice to keep the price as it is now than to subsidise.

“Subsidies like this come when it is necessary to provide the service to people at a particular time. The issue now is that we are just coming out of recession. It will probably be a wrong decision to increase the price of fuel. It will negate the recovery from recession.”

Operatives of the Ojodu Abiodun Police Station in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State were stunned on Sunday as some youths invaded the division and vandalised property.

The assailants reportedly broke into the cell of the station, freed detained suspects and carted away some valuables, including television sets and seized motorcycles.

Cars parked beside the station were also destroyed.

Latest Reality Metro learnt that the youths, in a large number, stormed the station around 1pm in retaliation for the shooting of a youth.

It was gathered that a team of policemen had raided a black spot in the Yakoyo area on Saturday, when they were confronted by some hoodlums.

The team was said to have responded with gunshots during which the victim, Dada Omotoye, who was relaxing in front of his house, was hit by a bullet.

He was said to have been rushed to a private hospital in the community.

On Sunday, some angry youths were said to have mobilised to a checkpoint along the Alagbole under bridge, but were repelled by the operatives on duty.

They allegedly regrouped in numbers and attacked the division around 1pm.

There was tension when our correspondent visited the police station around 2pm on Sunday as armed men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad were seen patrolling the area.

It was observed that glasses of the station’s windows had been shattered, while its charge room was in a shambles. An electricity box at the entrance of the charge room was also destroyed.

Windscreens and side glasses of four vehicles parked beside the division were vandalised. Two of the cars reportedly belonged to policemen at the station.

Latest Reality Metro also observed that broken bottles littered a section of the premises, while a television set was smashed by the station gate.

Our correspondent heard an armed policeman in mufti, telling a man that there were a few operatives on the ground when the hoodlums struck.

He said, “We were caught unawares. It was only the S.O. (Station Officer), one or two policemen and me that were at the station when they (the hoodlums) came. They were about 200. They entered my office and removed my TV set. They went to other offices and stole TV sets. They carted away some seized motorcycles on the premises. Their intention was to burn the station, but we were able to disperse them.”

An FSARS operative was also heard lamenting that the hoodlums freed some suspects in the police custody.

Some panic-stricken residents approached by our correspondent declined comments on the incident.

Our correspondent, however, eavedropped on a crowd discussing the attack in hushed tones.

One of them said, “They did not find any stolen property on the boy. Why did they shoot him? Will his parents be happy to lose him? I don’t blame the hoodlums for attacking the station. I am even happy that they freed people in the cell. Maybe some of them were arrested for offences they did not commit.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the shooting of the resident and attack on the division.

Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the perpetrators of the attack would be tracked down and brought to justice.

He said, “There is a black spot in that area, where hoodlums smoke Indian hemp and carry out all sorts of unlawful activities. There have been complaints from residents of the area. That was why the police went to raid the place. It was a raid, involving men from other divisions around the Ojodu Abiodun division, aimed at flushing out those hoodlums.

“In the process, the hoodlums attacked the policemen, throwing bottles and attacking them with cutlasses. A bullet ricocheted and hit somebody while the policemen were firing to scare the hoodlums away. The man sustained a minor injury and was taken to a hospital. He is responding to treatment. He is not among the hoodlums.

“Today (Sunday), the hoodlums moblised themselves and attacked the station. They damaged the station and stole some property. We have identified those behind that dastardly act and we will get them arrested. We will use them as a lesson to those who have the habit of attacking stations. It is an affront on the security agents and they will face the full wrath of the law. If any policeman errs, we have internal mechanism of dealing with them.”

The PPRO said the freed suspects had reported back to the station. LR News
