Thousands of babies are still dying daily from preventable causes – and pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and malnutrition are killing millions of under-fives in the developing world.
Progress is being made on young children’s health, with the under-five mortality rate almost cut in half since 2000. But sadly millions will still never reach their fifth birthday.
In fact, children in sub-Saharan Africa are 10 times more likely to die before the age of five than children in high-income countries.
A staggering 5.6 million children under five year last year – 15,000 per day – according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And many of these deaths could have been prevented.
These shocking figures show the importance of good health practices in the birth process and the care of young children.
Nurturing care includes access to health care plus clean water and sanitation – starting with ante- and postnatal visits for pregnant women, a skilled birth attendant and vaccinations.
Health care is one of the five key areas of Theirworld’s #5for5 campaign, which calls on world leaders to invest in early childhood development and pre-primary education.
While newborns are at the greatest rink, infants who survive into toddlerhood are then at risk from malnutrition, diarrhea and other treatable diseases.
Vaccinations, better sanitation and clean water – things the developed world takes for granted – would all save lives. Pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria accounted for almost one-third of deaths among under-fives globally.
In Yemen, UNICEF reported today that suspected cholera and acute watery diarrhea have affected over one million people – with children under five accounting for a quarter of all cases.
The Born Into War report added: “Women who became pregnant during the first 1000 days of war have given birth in deplorable conditions, without access to proper medical care, clean water and or a hygienic environment for delivery.
“Many mothers are malnourished and ill themselves, increasing their risk of dying or giving birth to premature and malnourished babies who do not make it beyond the first month of their life.”

Justice Afamefuna Nwobodo of Enugu State High Court, on Tuesday discharged and acquitted Onyeka Okpala of robbery charge for lack of diligent prosecution.
Nwobodo struck out the case and discharged the accused for lack of diligent prosecution.
The prosecutor, Mrs J.E. Enyeagha, had told the court that the matter slated for hearing could not go on because the witnesses were again not in court.
Enyeagha said that her efforts to assemble the witnesses had been unsuccessful.
Counsel to the accused, Mrs Ifeoma Okereke, told the court that the person in the dock was not the accused.
Okereke drew the attention of the court to the charge sheet, which stated that Osuji Alberto was robbed of his Blackberry phone and a sum of N300, 000 by two men in a tricycle.
She told the court that the person in the dock was a woman and not two men as claimed by the prosecution in the charge sheet before the court.
According to her, Alberto was allegedly robbed of the items at St Mary Church Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, in September, 2011.
“It is also on record that the incident involved two men in a tricycle along the said avenue and not a woman or women.
“My client has no business with any blackberry phone and beside she has been coming to court from Lagos, all this while.
“It is unfortunate that this young woman, who is a graduate of Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (IMT), is now suffering what she does not know about.
“My lord, I plead that the court should strike out this case for lack of diligent prosecution pending when the prosecution is ready to prosecute the case,” she pleaded.

Ex Minister, Jumoke Akinjide

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide before a Federal High Court Sitting in Lagos.

Akinjide was re-arraigned before Justice Muslim Hassan on a 24 count charge.

She was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission alongside a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is said to be at large.

Others named in the charge are Senator Ayo Adeseun and a Chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olarenwaju Otiti.

They were all accused of conspiring to directly take possession of N650million, which they reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act.

The defendants allegedly received the money from Mrs Alison-Madueke in the build-up to the 2015 general election.

The money was said to be part of a larger sum of $115 million allegedly doled out by Mrs Alison-Madueke to influence the outcome of the 2015 presidential election.

One of the charges reads in part: “That you, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke (still at large), Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, Senator Ayo Ademola Adeseun and Chief Olarenwaju Otiti on or about the 26th day of March, 2015, in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired amongst yourselves to directly take possession of the N650 million which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act.

“That you, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, Senator Ayo Ademola Adeseun and Chief Olanrewaju Otiti on or about the 26th day of March, 2015 in Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did conspire amongst yourselves to commit an offence, to wit: making cash payment of the sum of N650 million which sum exceeded the amount authorized by Law without going through financial institution and you thereby committed an offence.”

Last year June, the EFCC had arraigned the defendants before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik sitting at the Federal High Court, Ibadan but the case was transfered to Lagos and this necessitated today’s re-arraignment.

At today’s proceeding, the EFCC arraigned Ms. Akinjide on 9 out of the 24 count charge. She pleaded not guilty.

The second defendant, Senator Ayo Adeseun pleaded not guilty to 17 out of the 24 count charge made against him while the third defendant, Chief Olanrewaju Otiti also pleaded not guilty to 6 of the counts.

Counsel to Akinjide, Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, then asked the court to allow his client to continue to enjoy bail as earlier granted by the Federal High Court Sitting in Ibadan.

The counsel to the second and third defendant aligned themselves with this request on behalf of their clients.

Justice Muslim Hassan granted the request and ordered that the defendants should continue to enjoy bail.

He then adjourned their trial till February 5, 2018.

An auto parts dealer in the Owode Onirin area of Lagos State, Lukman Ogundele, has died in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.

Although the police formation had been reportedly  evasive on the whereabouts of the father of two children, a police charge sheet sighted by our correspondent marked his name ‘late’.

Latest Reality Metro learnt that Lukman and his friend, Saheed Abayomi, had been arrested by SARS operatives for facilitating the sale of a stolen Toyota Camry.

It was gathered that the police apprehended Lukman in the midnight of December 29, 2017 and took him into custody in Ikeja, where he was detained alongside Abayomi and two others.

Our correspondent learnt that Abayomi and Lukman’s families searched for them at police stations across the state, until on December 31 when Abayomi’s mother traced him to the SARS office.

It was gathered that Lukman’s wife, Wunmi Ogundele, and relatives consequently visited SARS office on several occasions, but were not allowed to see him.

“Any time we went there, policemen would chase us away and they did not allow us to see his friend, Saheed (Abayomi), so we could ask after him (Lukman). I had travelled with the children for the Yuletide when he was arrested,” Wunmi added.

His cousin, one Isaac, who went to the station on January 6, was reportedly told that the Investigating Police Officer, Inspector Edwin Obam, had taken him out.

After failed attempts to see him, his mother, Yemisi Ogundele, who lives in Taraba State, was said to have travelled down to Lagos.

Yemisi said, “He sold auto parts and iron in Owode Onirin. A man wanted to sell a car. He and Saheed got a buyer for the vehicle and the person sold it to someone else. On December 29, in the night, some SARS men went to his house in Itowolo, Ikorodu, with Saheed, and arrested him.

“Our family members went to the SARS office, but the policemen did not give them any attention. Last Wednesday, I came down to Lagos State and went there. The policemen I met said they did not know anybody by that name.

“I saw Saheed while he was being taken to the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court that day with two others. I asked for my son, but they chased me away. They did not allow me to get close to Saheed.”

The mother explained that Lukman’s brother and she met with an official at the court, who showed them the charge preferred against him.

She said she was shocked when she discovered that her son was charged with robbery along with one Kehinde Hassan.

“His name on the heading of the charge sheet had been cancelled, but in the content, it was written as late Lukman Ogundele. That was when I realised that my son died in the police custody, but they were trying to cover up.

“When my daughter prodded the IPO further, he made a call. After a few minutes, about eight armed policemen came to scare us away,” she added.

Lukman’s uncle, Pastor Bolaji Michael, said a policeman confided in him that Lukman was dead and appealed that the family should take the death in good faith.

He said the family had contacted a lawyer to petition the police and take up the matter.

He said, “Lukman and Saheed were arrested for introducing a buyer to a stolen vehicle. But he was charged with a separate count bordering on robbery. We will be in court on Tuesday (today) to see what happens. We will also get a lawyer to petition the Inspector-General of Police.

“Officially, SARS has not told the family that he is dead, which is wrong. It was a policeman that told us that the boy slumped in custody and died. He said he was not tortured and advised us to let go of the matter. He said he would help us to collect his corpse. He said if we let the case drag on, we might not get his corpse in one year.

“I disagreed with him and said we would take it up. This was a man who had two kids of seven and nine years old and a wife. He must not die just like that.”

Abayomi’s mother, who wanted to be identified as Iya Saheed, said a SARS officer had promised her that Lukman and her son would be released on bail as soon as the prime suspects in the case were arrested.

She said, “The officer promised that Saheed and Lukman would be released once they got one Idowu and Kehinde, the prime suspects, arrested. But after the two were caught, they did not release them.

“I was surprised when I got a call last Tuesday that they would be charged to court. Saheed, Idowu and Kehinde were brought to the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, but Lukman was not there. The police have postponed their arraignment to Tuesday (today).”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said Lukman died naturally on January 2, adding that the victim’s relatives were informed about the death through a family member, who is a policeman.

He said, “The boy was arrested for armed robbery with four others. Along the line, he was sick while in the cell and was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. The doctor treated him and the police took him back.  He was returned to custody.

“The next day, he collapsed and was rushed back to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, he was confirmed dead by a doctor. Other gang members have been arraigned and remanded in prison.”

US. President, Donald Trump

Nigeria has summoned the U.S. Ambassador, Mr Stuart Symington, to clarify issues regarding the alleged racist remarks credited to President Donald Trump.
“If it were true, they were deeply hurtful, offensive and unacceptable, especially given the cordial relations that exist between Nigerian and the U.S,” the country said on Monday.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama,  summoned the Ambassador on Monday.
The ministry’s Spokesperson, Dr Tope Elias-Fatile, in a statement, said that the Ambassador was represented by the Embassy’s Charge d’Affairs, Mr David Young.
“The minister sought clarification on the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks.’’
Elias-Fatile quoted Young as saying in his remarks that “there were contradicting accounts by those present as to the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks’’.
“Young stressed that Trump’s Government continues to hold the people of Nigeria in very high regard and valued the warm relations and excellent cooperation between the two countries.
“Trump also looks forward to building on this relationship for the mutual benefit of the two countries.”
The U.S. president reportedly made a racist comment at a meeting with congressional leaders in the Oval Office.
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump allegedly said after being presented with a proposal to restore protection for immigrants from Africa and other countries.
Trump was also alleged to have said that African countries, alongside Haiti and El Salvador, constitute ‘shitholes’ from where migrants into the United States were undesirable.
The U.S. president had, however, denied ever describing any race as coming from “shithole countries” in a Friday morning tweet.
He said “never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said “take them out.” Made up by Dems.
“I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!” Mr Trump said LR News

A combined team of the police, the Department of State Services and the Army, has reportedly killed a suspected kidnapper, Iso Akpafit.

Akpafit was said to have terrorised communities in the Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State for over a year.

He was also alleged to be responsible for some killings, cult clashes, robberies and kidnappings in the area.

It was learnt that Akpafit had been one of the most wanted persons on the police list before he was killed along with four others on Monday.

Our correspondent gathered that security operatives also arrested a native doctor who allegedly prepared charms for the criminals.

A resident, Mr. Edet Akpan, who confirmed the incident, said he saw the suspect’s corpse while it was being paraded in the community.

“As I speak to you, wild jubilation is ongoing in the whole of Ukanafun. Ukanafun people are happy. Personally, I am excited to be alive to witness this.

“Although four other members of the gang were killed, our people are particularly happy for the killing of the kingpin, Akpafit. We were told that their chief priest was arrested after he was shot in both legs. We don’t know his fate for now.

“Many of us were standing by the roadside when their dead bodies were moved out of Ukanafun in eight vans. And as the vehicles moved in a convoy, we were able to see the dead body of Akpafit,” he added.

It was gathered that Akpafit’s corpse had been deposited in the University of Uyo mortuary after a parade of the body around the community.

There were, however, conflicting reports on where he was killed, as some said he was shot dead in Rivers State, while others said he was killed in Ukanafun.

The Assistant Director, Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Major Umar Shuaib, said he was going to Ukanafun where he would issue a press release on the incident on Tuesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Macdon Ogbeche, said until the command got information from the field commander of what transpired, it would not make a statement on the arrest and death.

The ongoing strike by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities may have seriously affected the students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Investigation shows that the majority of the students, who are currently preparing to sit their 2016/2017 Second Semester examinations holding in a fortnight, are at the receiving end of the union’s nationwide industrial action.

Many of the students who spoke to our correspondent on Monday complained bitterly about not having electricity, water and access to the university’s library and health centre due to the strike.

In the absence of electricity, they are forced to study with the aid of candles and torches. Some of them have had to endure long spells in the cold harmattan weather to read under the solar energy-powered street lamps on the university campus.

A student of the OAU’s Faculty of Agriculture, Saheed, blamed the university authorities for not making adequate preparations before asking the students to resume.

“I am currently feeling pains in my eyeballs. I was forced to start reading with candle light since last week. In the Awolowo Hall where I live, we don’t have light and water. I am frustrated already because I cannot afford to have an extra year. You still have to read in this poor situation as we have been having tests vigorously,” he said.

Also, some other students, acting under the aegis of Education Rights Campaign, described the current situation living condition on their campus as pitiable and inhumane.

In a statement issued by their Acting Coordinator and Secretary, Dunnex Samuel and Damilola Amethyst, respectively, the students accused the school management of insensitivity.

The statement read in part, “We condemn the insensitive nature displayed by the school management regarding the resumption of students to hostile and life-threatening conditions.

“It is not only cruel, but it is also barbaric for an institution of learning that prides herself as one of the best in the sub-Saharan Africa to accommodate over 35,000 students in an environment that is devoid of health care services and electricity and a non-functional library amidst preparations for an d examination.”

When contacted, the Chairman of Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU branch, Comrade Wole Odewunmi, said that the striking non-academic workers in the university could hardly help the situation.

“As you know, the students are our children and we wish to help but we are incapacitated by factors beyond us.  The situation may change any moment from now and it may also get worsened,” he said.

On his part, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU branch, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, confirmed that the environment was not conducive for both members of staff and students.

“Our congress has not met to say anything on this. But, personally, a good parent should not allow his/her children to stay or take examinations in this kind of situation,” he said.

When contacted on the telephone, the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, appealed to the students to bear with the university management.

He said, “We want to appreciate our students for their readiness to learn and read for their examination. The university management is not resting on its oars as we are putting machinery in place to ensure that there is electricity.

“Within our little resources, we try to provide electricity by fuelling our generator with diesel; but if those things – generators, cables etc – have faults and those responsible for their repairs are on strike, there is nothing the management can do.

“It is a peculiar case. The students should please bear with us. There is a likelihood of another crisis if we bring people from outside to come and fix the spoilt generator.”
