Mauritius President, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim

Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim resigned on Saturday after being embroiled in a scandal over her use of a credit card to buy luxury personal items, in an abrupt change of heart after vowing she would not stand down.

Gurib-Fakim, Africa’s only female head of state, submitted her resignation in the “national interest,” her lawyer Yousouf Mohamed told reporters.

He said her resignation would take effect on March 23, a move that will bring down the curtain on a saga that has gripped the Indian Ocean archipelago for weeks.

Gurib-Fakim had vowed to fight the accusations that first appeared in local newspaper L’Express — that she used a bank card provided by an NGO to make personal purchases, including jewellery and luxury goods worth at least 25,000 euros.

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth announced a week ago that Gurib-Fakim had agreed to resign, with a date set for her departure after last Monday’s ceremony celebrating the Indian Ocean archipelago’s 50 years of independence.

But on Wednesday, a statement from the presidency lashed out at “weeks of attacks and false allegations” and said Gurib-Fakim planned to clear her name and would not go.

It is not clear what prompted her about-turn, but her lawyer said Saturday she was “relieved” she had made the decision to resign after enduring a “difficult” time in recent weeks.

Gurib-Fakim, whose role is mostly ceremonial, is a scientist and biologist of international renown, and in 2015 joined the London-based Planet Earth Institute (PEI) to try to develop scientific capacity in Africa.

The presidency said that in May 2016, she received a credit card from PEI to pay for travel and logistical expenses linked to her role but inadvertently used it for unrelated personal expenses.

Gurib-Fakim said she immediately informed the PEI and paid back the amount, as well as all expenses paid by the PEI for her missions.

This was confirmed by the PEI, which said in a statement earlier this week that Gurib-Fakim “thus never received gifts, favours, wages or expenses from the PEI, nor undue benefits or advantage”.

An investigation by L’Express detailed the purchase of a laptop in September 2016, clothes, shoes and jewellery in October, more jewellery in November and luxury clothing in December.

However it was not just the expenditure that provoked anger in Mauritius, but the president’s association with Angolan billionaire Alvaro Sobrinho who helped found the PEI and is himself being investigated in Switzerland and Portugal for suspected fraud.

In 2017 he received permission to open an investment bank in Mauritius, prompting allegations of favouritism on his behalf.

Gurib-Fakim, under pressure from the opposition, resigned shortly afterwards from her role at the PEI.

Prof. Osinbajo & Daughter, Damilola

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday led top government officials and captains of industry, among others, to attend the wedding of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s daughter, Damilola.

The wedding service of Damilola and her husband, Oluseun, was held earlier in the day at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja.

The guests thereafter moved to the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the reception took place.

Buhari was accompanied to the reception by his wife, Aisha.

State governors, ministers, presidential aides and other top government officials were present at the reception.

Like the traditional engagement that took place on Thursday, journalists were not allowed to cover any of the Saturday’s two events.

Rather, the vice-president’s media team had earlier advised that journalists will not be allowed to “record or film the event.”

The media office promised to “share information and images — still and video — about the events later in the day.”

The only concession given was that “cameras are however welcome to record the arrival and departure formalities at the church.”

In some of the photographs later released by the President’s media office, Buhari and his wife were seen exchanging pleasantries with the new couple and posing for group photographs with the couple and their parents.

The President was also captured shaking hands with some state governors that included those of Akwa Ibom, Borno, Imo, Nassarawa, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ondo, among others.

The President’s wife supervised cutting of the cake at the reception.

She expressed the conviction that Damilola will make a good wife, having been brought up by a pastor.

She prayed for the couple that their love will endure.

Our correspondent learnt that guests were not allowed into the venue with their mobile phones.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged its 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates to patiently await the results of the just concluded examinations.

The Head of Media of the Board, Fabian Benjamin, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

He said the board was working diligently to ensure that the results are processed and posted on the board’s website soonest.

Mr. Benjamin said modalities were being put in place to ensure all the results are transparent and accurate.

He reiterated that the board was delaying some of the results because each has to undergo total scrutiny before being posted on its website to avoid cancellations later.

According to him, some of the results would be ready by Monday, March 19.

He also assured that all technical difficulties encountered in accessing the website were being addressed.

NAN reports that a number of candidates, who sat for the examinations earlier, were yet to receive their results.

While some said that they received the reply of “your results are not ready yet”, others complained that the site says “you did not register for this examinations.’’

NAN also reports that the examination, which was scheduled to end on Saturday, March 17, ended on Friday, March 16.

Dr. John Omoyakhi, Associate Professor, Department of Animal Science, University of Benin, has advised the government to assist herdsmen to stop their nomadic way of life.
Omoyakhi gave the advice in Benin on Friday, when he presented a paper on ” Technical Options for Responding to Open Cattle Grazing in Edo”.
He presented the paper at the maiden edition of the lecture series organised by the Gatekeepers, a non-partisan independent political action committee.
The government, he advised, should urgently assist and encourage the nomads to acquire formal education.
Aside providing protection to the herders and farmers, the government should adopt a holistic approach to solve the lingering problem of herders and farmers clashes.
He said that allowing cattle to roam the streets was an embarrassment to the Nation.
He also said that the “occasional accidents caused by cattle crossing highways were horrific’.
He noted that desertification and deforestation in the North and middle Belt had caused the nomads to migrate to the South.
The Chairman of the occasion, Justice Roland Amaize (Rtd), said government should do the needful, as the issue of herdsmen menace touches on the lives of every citizen.
He noted that before now herdsmen moved about without acrimony, adding that the situation had changed and their activities had become sickening.
He urged politicians to stop politicising the issue and to tackle the problem head on. LR News

FBI Deputy Director, Andrew McCabe

Few days after the sack of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson by President Donald Trump, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has been suspended for lying to investigators reviewing the bureau’s probe of Hillary Clinton’s email server.
The sack made possible by the Justice Department, dealt a big blow to McCabe, as his firing came just days before his retirement and a guarantee of lifetime pension.
“Pursuant to Department Order 1202, and based on the report of the Inspector General, the findings of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility, and the recommendation of the Department’s senior career official, I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.
“After an extensive and fair investigation and according to Department of Justice procedure, the Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) provided its report on allegations of misconduct by Andrew McCabe to the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR),” Sessions said.
“The FBI’s OPR then reviewed the report and underlying documents and issued a disciplinary proposal recommending the dismissal of Mr. McCabe.  Both the OIG and FBI OPR reports concluded that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor − including under oath − on multiple occasions.
The FBI expects every employee to adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and accountability.  As the OPR proposal stated, ‘all FBI employees know that lacking candor under oath results in dismissal and that our integrity is our brand.'”
McCabe hit back in a fiery response of his own.
“This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally,” McCabe said.
“It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day. Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel’s work.”
McCabe’s firing marked stunning fall for a man who was No. 2 at the bureau for a time under Comey, ran it and even was reportedly on President Trump’s short list for the directorship.
