The Police and Federal Road Safety Corps in Sokoto state on Saturday said they recorded crime and hitch free Eid-el-Kabir festivities in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, Muhammad Abdulkadir, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Sokoto that the celebrations were hitch free.

Abdulkadir said policemen were deployed to various locations in the state during the periods to maintain law and order.

He restated command’s commitments to live up to the expectation on safeguarding lives and property and urged public to always assist police with immediate information on any suspicious movements.

Aliyu Garba, the Public Relations Officer of the FRSC, Sokoto State Command, also told NAN that no road crash was recorded during Sallah celebrations.

Garba said officials were stationed to control traffic at various locations of the metropolis and in the local government areas, while drivers and other road users were enjoined to respect traffic rules.

He cautioned drivers against speeding, dangerous driving, over loading, which he said were major causes of road crashes.

Garba urged vehicle owners to ensure proper condition of their vehicles, screens and tyres as the rainy season was on its peak in the area.

On September, 2, 2017, some suspects in the Anti-Kidnapping Section (D7) of State CIID Umuahia Cell, Abia State, escaped from the detention facility.

The suspects made away with two AK 47 Rifles kept outside the Armoury for quick response to emergencies, to facilitate their escape.

The inmates conceived the escape and nurtured it into fruition due to the negligence/absence from duty of the policemen scheduled for duty on that fateful day.

However, three of the escapees, Kingsley Anyim, Chijioke Chukwu and Emeka Ukaegbu have been rearrested and one of the rifles recovered.

Meanwhile, all the officers involved in the act of negligence/absence from duty have all been taken through the Force approved disciplinary action process and dismissed from the Force, and will be prosecuted.

Efforts to rearrest the remaining escapees is being intensified. One of the suspects, Emeka Ukaegbu, has confessed to where he kept the remaining AK47 rifle.

The Rivers State Police command has re-arrested Ifeanyi Dike, who escaped from custody in Port Harcourt while being interrogated for alleged rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl.

Nnamdi Omoni, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, confirmed the arrest of the suspected ritualist to NEXT EDITION.

Dike is said to have been arrested in Barkin Ladi in Plateau State, North-central Nigeria.

The suspected ritualist, who was paraded by the state police command for raping and killing an eight-year-old girl in Eliozu area of Port Harcourt, escaped from custody barely hours after he was shown to newsmen.

Addressing reporters before the escape of the suspect, Omoni had said Dike allegedly raped, killed and removed vital parts from the eight-year-old girl’s body.

He also confirmed that the suspect was arrested by local security in Obio-Akpor, adding that there was a plan by the suspect to use his victim for a ritual.

“On Saturday 19/8/2017 at about 0130hrs Men of the Okporo Police Station arrested one Ifeanyi Chukwu Maxwell Dike, 23yrs of Messiah Street Eliozu Port Harcourt, who abducted one Chikamso Victory, eight yrs of the same address on 18/8/2017.

“The little girl was abducted, defiled and killed, while her vagina, eyes, tongue, and breast were removed and put in a polythene bag. The suspect was going to dispose of the body when he was arrested by the local Vigilante that suspected his movement.

“On being questioned the suspect dropped the bag and took to flight. Consequently, he was given a hot chase and arrested. On further interrogation by the Police, he confessed and took the Police to where the vital organs were concealed.

“The body and the organs have been recovered, paraded and deposited in the mortuary. While the suspect is helping us in Investigation.”

Shortly after he was paraded before reporters, Mr. Dike escaped from police custody even before he could give a statement.

Ernest Mezuwuba, the father of the girl, told journalists that suspect escaped while being asked to write a statement at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID.

“After I finished writing my statement and the suspect wrote his, he told the police that he wanted to drink water and the next thing I heard was help, catch him, he is running away and the officer just returned and said he has escaped.”

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the shooting of the Parish Priest of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Onilekere, Cement in Lagos State, Rev. Fr. Daniel Nwankwo, in the early hours of Friday.

As earlier reported, Father Nwankwo was shot by the gunmen shortly after the early morning mass.
The shooting, according to the police, occurred at about 8:30am.

According to a statement by the spokesman of the Command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, the gunmen had also attended the morning mass, which started at about 6:30am.
They thereafter requested to have a dialogue with Nwankwo, who heads the parish.

Famous-Cole said: “The Rev Father who unsuspectingly granted the hoodlums an audience outside the church auditorium for a yet to be determined reason was shot at by one of the hoodlums who spoke fluently in igbo language with a locally made pistol.

“After the incident the Rev Father raised alarm, while the hoodlums jumped the fence and escaped towards an adjoining canal.
The Rev Father was immediately taken to LASUTH for medical attention where he is currently been treated and is under stable conditions.”

The State Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal, was at the scene and spoke with a witness who confirmed that three assailant of Igbo background, who were not known to be members of the church, were seen having a conversation with Nwankwo before he was shot.

Edgal, according to Famous-Cole, has also visited Nwankwo, spoke directly with him and confirmed that the Reverend Father is being given adequate medical care and recuperating fast.

The CP also immediately ordered a crack team of detectives and operational officers from the police command to fish out the attackers.

Five suspects were said to have been arrested in connection with the shooting of Father Nwankwo.
They are undergoing interrogation, Famous-Cole said.

He added: The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State is advising Lagosians to be vigilant and security conscious at this time and must identify and report any strange faces and suspicious movement.

“He has also ordered the deployment of static police guard and instructed the Area Commanders and DPOs to provide static police guard on 24 hours basis in all churches and mosque across the state instead of only on Fridays and Sundays like it has been done in the past.

“Edgal Imohimi has also assured Lagosians that every asset of the police command will be deployed to make sure these hoodlums that made an attempt on the Rev. Father’s life will be arrested and brought to book.”

Lagos State CP, Imohimi Edgal

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has ordered the Officer-in-Charge of ‘X’ SQUAD to arrest three police officers caught extorting motorists around Surulere area of the State.

Edgal has also ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration of the Lagos State Police Command to issue the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of the area a query and also report his conduct to higher authorities for poor supervision of his men, according to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

The CP also ordered that henceforth only Heads of Departments, Area Commanders and DPOs who are directly in charge of their Departments or stations are allowed to sign a detention order in the Command.
The CP said under no circumstances should any other person sign a detention order.

Edgal further stated that any area command found guilty of unworthy or shameful act to the police force, the Area Commander or DPO will be held liable for unnecessary detention of citizens.

According to him: “It has become very vital for all officers and men in Lagos State Police Command to adhere to these instructions and on no account will the fundamental rights of the citizens of Lagos be trampled upon under my watch.”

The CP said the officers found guilty of extorting motorists are currently facing disciplinary actions and the police force in the State will no longer tolerate any act of lawlessness from its personnel.

The Nigeria Union in South Africa says five Nigerians detained by the police for protesting the killing of a businessman have been released.

Clement Kalu, 35, a native of Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was allegedly killed by the police while being interrogated for being in possession of drugs at Springs town, near Johannesburg on September 5.

The Nigerians protested in front of the police station in the town, prompting the police to shoot rubber bullets to disperse them.
Some of the protesters were allegedly wounded and treated in the hospital.

Adetola Olubajo, the President of the Union, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Pretoria, South Africa on Friday that the Nigerians were arrested on September 6.

Olubajo said: “They were arrested for protesting the killing of a member of the Nigerian community in the town.

“Following our intervention, they were released on September 7.
“We urge Nigerians in the town to remain law abiding while we await the outcome of the post mortem on the deceased.”

Olubajo said the union had informed the Nigerian mission in South Africa on the latest development and would continue to monitor the situation.

He said the union was on top of the situation and expressed shock on the alleged killing of the businessman.
