Persons with disabilities have staged a protest in Awka, the Anambra State capital, over their voting rights.

The group said its members were being marginalised in election issues.

It demanded equal voting access in the November 18, 2017 poll in the state and in other elections.

The Executive Director of Centre for Citizen with Disabilities, Mr. David Anyaele, led the protest.

Anyaele said persons with disabilities were more than 600,000 in Anambra State and over 25 million in Nigeria.

He said, “The number of people with disabilities in Nigeria towered above the number of citizens in countries like Croatia, Belgium Denmark, and New Zealand put together.”

He said the group would take their protest to the Independent National Electoral Commission and ask to be provided with items as braille ballots, assistive devices, especially for the visually impaired amongst them.

The group threatened to take its protest to the National and State Houses of Assembly if they were not properly accommodated in the electoral processes of the country, starting with the Anambra poll.

It maintained that it had lined up activities in that respect, including interfacing with INEC officials, political parties, security agencies, heads of organisations, the media to sensitize them on areas of intervention on the marginalisation of their members.

It added, “Also, we will train and deploy two persons with disabilities each as observers across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State to observe the governorship election of November 18.

“We shall also impress on INEC to carefully choose the location of polling units to ensure that they are accessible for PWDs by locating polling units on flat surfaces as opposed to corridors, especially where ramps and hand rails are yet to be provided”

The group used the occasion to launch its chapter in Anambra State.

IGP. Ibrahim Idris

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has commended the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, for making the security of lives and property in the state a priority.

Idris said this was why the state was chosen for the 2017 South-South Security Summit, which held during the week.

According to a statement, the IGP stated this while he paid a visit to the governor shortly before the commencement of the summit.

Commending the governor, Idris said, “Akwa Ibom State is one of the very few states we have in this country where you can see that security is taken as a very serious issue.

“Your Excellency, this is an issue we believe other states can take a cue from. We are obviously here to appreciate your commitment to peace, to appreciate your commitment to good governance.”

The IGP also reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting the lives and property of the citizens.

In his remarks, Emmanuel said he would deepen the smooth relationship the state had with the police to ensure a safe and peaceful society for the residents.

He, however, called on the IGP to tackle the increasing rate of rape cases, especially against minors, urging prompt prosecution of the culprits.

He said, “It is very traumatising at times when you hear of a five-year-old girl being raped by an adult. Believe me, I can’t sleep or eat that day.

“I believe that if the police put pressure on the judiciary over this heinous crime against humanity, the judiciary will also sit up.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has on Friday in Abuja called for urgent measures to decongest  prisons across the country
The president stated this when he hosted a delegation of the judicial arm of government led by the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen, at the Presidential Villa.
He raised alarm over the state of the nation’s prisons, noting that it was a national scandal that many prisons were overcrowded by 90 per cent.
He stated that the call  for prisons decongestion had become imperative not only in the interest of justice but to save the cost of prisons’ maintenance and boost the welfare of prisoners.
“We need a new approach to prison congestion. It is a national scandal that many prisons are overcrowded by 90 per cent.
“Urgent new measures should be put place to speedily decongest the prisons not only in the interest of justice but to save cost of prisons’ maintenance and welfare of prisoners.
“My Attorney General is advocating establishment of courts inside the prisons to speed up decongestion,’’ he said.
On review of the conditions of service of the judicial staff, the president directed the office of the Attorney General of the federation to take up the issue with the Salary and Wages Commission with a view to advising him for prompt action.
He stated that his administration was not unmindful of the challenges facing the judiciary, saying that the increased budgetary allocation to the judiciary in the 2017 fiscal year would be sustained.
Buhari lamented that huge sums were being spent on security, especially in the North East and Niger Delta regions, instead of meaningful development, to better the lives of citizens.
He, however, expressed optimism that God would touch the minds of Nigerians to be patient with the government in its efforts to transform the nation’s economy.
“From 1999 to 2014, Nigeria has never realised so much resources since our independence, never, because the average production, go to any renowned financial or economic institution in the world they know Nigeria produced an average of 2.1 million barrel per day at an average cost of 100 dollars per barrel.
“But when we came in it crashed to 37 dollars per barrel, and we looked at saving and there was no saving.
“So really, we have just started working and we hope God in his infinite mercy would give Nigerians the patient to tolerate us,’’ he added.
While commending the judiciary for establishing special courts to speed up trial for corruption and other criminal cases, Buhari said the stability of the country depended a lot on the Judiciary and Police.
Earlier, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, thanked God for healing the President Buhari.
He reassured the president that that the judiciary would continue to do its best for the country. (NAN)
