Lagos CP, Fatai Owoseni

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, on Wednesday said the Command had put adequate security measures in place to cover some 344 Muslim praying grounds identified in the state during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Owoseni, assuring Lagos residents of plans to ensure a hitch-free festival, however urged members of the public to celebrate modestly and not provoke any form of violence in the state.

He said: “The Eid-il-Kabir is two days away. The command, while wishing Muslim faithful happy celebration, states that every operational plan is in place, including identification of Muslim praying grounds in Lagos, which are about 344.

“Adequate security measures have been made to cover the praying grounds and to ensure that all routes are covered by police presence.

“This is to effectively manage the traffic and assure fun-seekers and Muslim faithful of security to and from praying grounds.

“The command will not give room to any criminal element to molest or attack anyone in the state.

“The police and other security agencies are fully on ground and well positioned. Their eagle eyes will catch anyone who tries to commit a crime.”

Owoseni advised members of the public to report any suspicious activity to the police and other security agencies.

He said that measures had also been put in place in collaboration with Ogun State Police Command to cover exit routes by increasing visibility on the routes.

Acting EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says some of its officials are currently being prosecuted for corruption in various courts across the country.

The Acting Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, disclosed this at an interactive session with Editors in Abuja on Wednesday.

Magu, who did not immediately give the number of the affected officials, said he would not condone any act of corruption in the agency.

He said: “Recently, we had to discharge about nine cadet officers because they have problem with their certificates from various institutions.

“We are also prosecuting a lot of officers. Some of them are already in court.
“There is a way you can help us. Just like you can help us with information regarding corrupt practices outside the EFCC, and proceeds of corruption, you can also assist in giving us the information.

“But, I assure you, I do not tolerate, I won’t condone any act of corruption in the EFCC.
“I cannot be everywhere but I am telling you I don’t spare any allegation no matter how little, we make sure we investigate.

“No allegation against the EFCC personnel is left uninvestigated. Even if there is allegation against me, we will refer it to the appropriate authority to investigate.’’

The EFCC boss said that the ongoing anti-corruption war was getting tougher, saying the fight had never been this tough in the several years he had spent in the battle.

He reiterated his call for concerted efforts by all stakeholders, especially the media, in the fight.

Magu said: “Nobody will claim ownership, nobody has a better knowledge than the other person, nobody has a monopoly of knowledge in the fight against corruption.

“We need everybody on board now that the fight against corruption is getting tougher. I have been in this business for a very long time; it has never been this tough like now.

“Some of us feel that it is our generation that caused corruption. So, we have a responsibility to clear the debt.
“Please don’t get tired because it is about Nigeria, it is not about individuals. All of us have a responsibility to God Almighty to fight corruption.

“Let us double our efforts. From the way we are going, they have already failed. It is almost half won, but we must sustain the momentum.’’

Kwara Harmony Holdings on Tuesday paid N1.5 million out of the N3.7 million as compensation to owners of 25 hectares of customary lands acquired by the State Government 11 years ago.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 25 hectares of land was acquired for the cultivation of grains at Ogbondoroko in the Asa Local Government Area of the state.

Presenting the cheque to the representatives of the customary land owners in Ilorin, the Director-General of the Bureau of Lands, Alhaji Ibrahim Salman, expressed government’s apologies for the delay in the payment of the compensation.

Salman attributed the delay to the transfer of the acquired land to the various Ministries in the state, before the Kwara Harmony Holdings acquired it in 2013.

Salman assured the land owners that the Kwara Harmony Holdings will pay the outstanding balance of N1.7m within two months.

Responding on behalf of the customary land owners, Alhaji Usman Olosun, appealed to the state government to find another piece of land for the erection of a mosque and a Quranic school which have been demolished on the land.
