Few days after it conducted a test for applicants seeking to join the Nigeria Police Force, JAMB is set to conduct a similar test for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
JAMB’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.
Benjamin said that the patronage by FRSC resulted from the success the board recorded in the recent conduct of recruitment test for the police.
“The corps marshal was at the board a few days ago, where he expressed confidence in the conduct of such third party examination by the board.
“He solicited for a partnership with the board to conduct the corps examination coming up soon.
“The examination is for three cadres – officers, marshal inspectorate and road marshal assistant cadres,” Benjamin said.
He advised the prospective candidates for the examination to adhere strictly to instructions to avoid unfounded speculations.
“The board still finds it hard to believe speculations trailing the police recruitment examination that candidates were examined in Arabic alongside other subjects.
“Such rumours are not only misleading, but malicious and wicked.
“Let me state clearly that the candidates were tested on only English Language and nothing more,” he told our correspondents.
The spokesman said that JAMB would continue to be transparent in examination conduct, adding that it would always give candidates equal opportunities.
According to him, the board has been equipped with human and materials resources to conduct hitch-free examinations for recruitment, promotion and other selections in the most transparent manner.
“It is because of the confidence that organisation such as the EFCC, West African College of Surgeons and others have in our process that we conducted similar examinations for them in the past,” Benjamin said. LR News

Scientists outline ways to overcome death phobia. Above Pope Francis visits U.S. cemetery

Thanatophobia is a form of anxiety characterised by a fear of one’s own death or the process of dying.U It is commonly referred to as death anxiety.
Death anxiety is not defined as a distinct disorder, but it may be linked to other depression or anxiety disorders. These include:post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD, panic disorders and panic attacks, illness anxiety disorders, previously called hypochondriasis
Thanatophobia is different from necrophobia, which is a general fear of dead or dying things, or things associated with death.
What is thanatophobia?
Someone may have a phobia about death or dying if he avoid situations involving these subjects.
In the Greek language, the word ‘Thanatos’ refers to death and ‘phobos’ means fear. Thus, thanatophobia translates as the fear of death.
Having some anxiety about death is an entirely normal part of the human condition. However, for some people, thinking about their own death or the process of dying can cause intense anxiety and fear.
A person may feel extreme anxiety and fear when they consider that death is inevitable. They may also experience:fear of separation, fear of dealing with a loss and worry about leaving loved ones behind.
When such fears persist and interfere with daily life and activities, this is known as thanatophobia.
In their most extreme, these feelings can stop people from conducting daily activities or even leaving their homes. Their fears center on things that could result in death, such as contamination or dangerous objects or people.

Symptoms and diagnosis
Doctors do not classify thanatophobia as a distinct condition, but it can be classified as a specific phobia.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), a phobia is an anxiety disorder relating to a specific object or situation.
The fear of death is considered a phobia if the fear arises almost every time a person thinks about dying, persists for more than 6 months and gets in the way of everyday life or relationships.
Key symptoms that a person may have a phobia of dying include:immediate fear or anxiety when thinking about dying or the process of dying, panic attacks that can cause dizziness, hot flushes, sweating, and a raised or irregular heart rate,
avoidance of situations where thinking about death or dying may be necessary, feeling sick or getting stomach pains when thinking about death or dying and
general feelings of depression or anxiety
Phobias can lead to a person feeling isolated and avoiding contact with friends and family for extended periods of time.
The symptoms may come and go over an individual’s lifetime. Someone with mild death anxiety might experience heightened anxiety when they think about their death or the death of a loved one, such as when they or a family member is seriously ill.
If death anxiety is linked to another anxiety or depressive condition, a person may also experience specific symptoms related to the underlying conditions.

Causes and types of thanatophobia

While thanatophobia is defined as a general fear of death, there are many types and causes of this anxiety, and the particulars of what an individual focuses on can vary.
Phobias are often triggered by a specific event in a person’s past, though the person does not always remember what this was. Particular triggers for thanatophobia could include an early traumatic event related to almost dying or the death of a loved one.
A person who has a severe illness may experience thanatophobia because they are anxious about dying, though ill health is not necessary for a person to experience this anxiety. Instead, it is often related to psychological distress.
The experience of death anxiety may differ, depending on individual factors. These include:
Age. A 2017 study suggests that older adults fear the dying process, while younger people more commonly fear death itself.
Sex. According to a 2012 study, women were more likely than men to fear the death of loved ones and the consequences of their death.
Medical professionals link anxiety around death to a range of mental health conditions, including depressive disorders, PTSD, and anxiety disorders.
Thanatophobia may be linked to:
Specific phobias
Death anxiety is associated with a range of specific phobias. The most common objects of phobias are things that can cause harm or death, including snakes, spiders, planes, and heights.
Panic disorders
A fear of dying plays a role in many anxiety disorders, such as panic disorders. During a panic attack, people may feel a loss of control and an intense fear of dying or impending doom.
Illness anxiety disorders
Death anxiety may be linked to illness anxiety disorders, previously known as hypochondriasis. Here, a person has intense fear associated with becoming ill and excessively worries about their health.

Overcoming thanatophobia
Talking therapies may help when managing thanatophobia. Social support networks may help to protect a person against death anxiety. Some people may come to terms with death through religious beliefs, though these may perpetuate a fear of death in others.
Those with high self-esteem, good health, and a belief that they have led a fulfilling life are less likely to have a fear of death than some others.
A doctor may recommend that a person with thanatophobia receive treatment for an anxiety disorder, phobia, or for a specific underlying cause of their fear.
Treatment involves a form of behavioral or talking therapy. This therapy tries to teach the individual to refocus their fears and to work through them by talking about their concerns.
Treatment options for death anxiety include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT works by gently altering a person’s behavioral patterns so that they can form new behaviors and ways of thinking.
A doctor will help a person to come up with practical solutions to overcome their feelings of anxiety. They may work to develop strategies that allow them to be calm and unafraid when talking or thinking about death.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapies, or talking therapies, involve talking through anxieties and fears with a psychologist or psychotherapist. These professionals will help someone find out the cause of their fear, and come up with strategies to cope with anxieties that occur during the day.
Sometimes, even just talking about the anxiety can help a person to feel more in control of their fear.
Exposure therapy
Exposure therapy works by helping a person face their fears. Instead of burying how they feel about death or not acknowledging their concerns, they are encouraged to be exposed to their fears.
A therapist will carry out exposure therapy by very gradually exposing a person to their fear, in a safe environment, until the anxiety response reduces, and a person can confront their thoughts, objects, or feelings without fear.
Medication
If doctors diagnose a person with a specific mental health condition, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or PTSD, they may prescribe anti-anxiety medication. This may include beta-blockers or antidepressant medication.
When people use medicines alongside psychotherapies, they are often most effective.
While medication can be beneficial by relieving feelings of panic and stress in the short term, long-term use of such medication may not be the ideal solution. Instead, working through fears in therapy is more likely to provide long-term relief.
Relaxation techniques
Practicing self-care can be powerful for boosting overall mental health, including helping a person feel more able to cope with their anxieties. Avoiding alcohol and caffeine, getting a good night’s sleep, and eating a nutritious diet are some ways to practice self-care.
When a person is experiencing anxiety, specific relaxation techniques can help clear their mind and de-escalate their fears. These may include:doing deep breathing exercises, focusing on specific objects in the room, such as counting the tiles on the wall and meditation or focusing on positive imagery
Outlook
While it is natural to have concerns about the future and the future of loved ones, if the anxiety around death persists for more than six months or hinders daily life, it may be worth someone speaking to a doctor.
There are many ways that a person can overcome their fear of death, and a mental health professional will be able to offer guidance and reassurance during this process.

No fewer than 100 prisoners in Anambra have benefited from a free medical outreach of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) as part of events marking the 45th anniversary of the corps.
Mr Ebenezer Olawale, the Coordinator of NYSC in the state, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Awka on Sunday.
“NYSC was 45 years exactly on May 22 and we celebrated it here in Anambra with an array of programmes including free medical outreach for prison inmates.
“We attended to over 100 prisoners and also gave out drugs.
“As part of the celebrations, we also conducted environmental clean-up as well as road walks.
” We thank the good people of Anambra for the good relationships between the state and the NYSC and also solicit for more of such cooperation,” Olawale said.
He said that the scheme had done well in the last 45 years in executing its mandate of building bridges across the country.
According to him, distrust and mutual suspicion among tribes and regions as a result of the Nigerian civil war, has been eliminated to a large extent through the mobilisation of youths from a particular area of the country to places outside their states of origin.
“We thank God the core mandate of the Corps has been sustained all these years,” he said.
The coordinator described Anambra as one of the safest states for corps members in the country and thanked God for the good security atmosphere in the state. LR News

The opening of US embassy in Jerusalem on May 14 has put many African countries on the diplomatic edge even as many favoured two-state solution to the Middle East imbroglio.
African countries are in a diplomatic quandary as they weighed between protecting their cordial relations with Israel and toeing the African Union line that supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine question.
In East Africa, Kenya and Rwanda have confirmed being among 11 African countries represented at the ceremony that was frowned upon and snubbed by most countries opposed to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Nigeria and Tanzania denied reports that they were represented at the event.
Both Israel and Palestine claim Jerusalem as their capital, and the opening of the US embassy sparked off protests by Palestinians, resulting in the death of at least 59 people.
In Angola, media reported that two senior officials were sacked for attending a gala dinner hosted by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs to celebrate the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.
Also in Nigeria, an official statement was issued and Al-Jazeera TV quickly recanted the story.
Last week, Rwanda confirmed that its ambassador to Israel Col Joseph Rutabana was among the dignitaries, alongside officials from Angola, Cameroon, Congo Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Zambia.
Rwanda’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe, however, said the attendance, as a guest, had nothing to do with the relocation of the mission.
South Africa recalled its ambassador over the issue.
“The location of the US embassy is a sovereign matter of that country. Rwanda has nothing to say about it. We were invited to the event and we honoured the invitation,” Mr Nduhungirehe told The EastAfrican.
On whether Rwanda supports or recognises Palestine as an independent state, Mr Nduhungirehe said Kigali backs the two-state solution.
Rwanda, he said, supports the existence of “two independent states living side by side in peace and security — a viable Palestine and a secure Israel”.
Rwanda remains one of the closest allies of Israel, with President Paul Kagame and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintaining close ties.
In March, Israel Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman visited Kigali and met with President Kagame, Defence Minister Gen James Kabarebe and Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.
Kenya did not have an ambassador in Israel at the time of the US embassy opening, but was represented at the event by embassy officials.
Last week, Kenya’s Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Macharia Kamau, told the media that the country’s position had not changed. The ministry later issued a statement in which it affirmed its support for the African Union’s two-state solution.
“Kenya recognises the right of Palestinians to self-determination. Having been colonised, fought for independence and attained self-determination, Kenya is, and will always be sympathetic to any entity seeking self-determination,” the statement said.
Earlier, the AU had issued a statement in the wake of the protests in the Gaza Strip, in which it condemned the excessive use of force by Israeli soldiers on protesters.
“The relocation of the United States Embassy to Jerusalem can only further heighten tensions in the region and complicate the search for a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as illustrated by Monday’s incidents,” said AU Commission Chairperson Mahamat Faki.
“The AU affirms solidarity with the Palestinian people in their legitimate quest for an independent and sovereign State with East Jerusalem as its capital,” his statement added, explaining the AU’s position was for a two-state solution.
Meanwhile, Tanzania, which opened its embassy in Ramat Gan, east of Tel Aviv, in early May, said it is targeting economic benefits through bilateral relations with Israel. Minister for Foreign Affairs Augustine Mahiga said Tanzania was not part of the event that attracted protests in Palestine.
Dr Mahiga said that Tanzania is looking to attract Israelis to invest in agriculture, health, industrial technology and tourism.
Tanzania will take part in international dialogues to bring peace between Palestinians and Israelis, he said, adding that the country had not abandoned Palestinians and their pursuit for self-determination. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit Tanzania early next year to strengthen renewed friendship between the two countries.
Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, who attended the official opening of the Tanzanian Embassy and who visited Tanzania a month ago, said at the ceremony that she hoped one day to see the Tanzanian flag flying in Jerusalem.
She said Israel was grateful to Tanzania for opening the embassy and hoped that the new embassy would significantly upgrade of Israeli-Tanzanian co-operation. LR News

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate has suspended 24,021 retirees from the payroll of the Federal Government.

PUNCH gathered that the suspension, which took place in April, led to a reduction in the amount paid as monthly pensions by the Federal Government.

PTAD is the government agency in charge of the pensioners under the Defined Benefits Scheme.

The agency noted, “Payment between March and April dropped due to the suspension of 24,021 pensioners that did not come forward for the verification between 2015 and 2018.”

In its monthly report to the Ministry of Finance, the directorate mentioned some of the key achievements and performance on its pension payments for April.

After it concluded its nationwide verification of federal retirees, PTAD had earlier stated that it added 7,969 civil service pensioners to its payroll to receive monthly pension payments.

It noted that these pensioners were verified in the South West and North Central in Q4 2017 and have been paid their March 2018 pension.

The directorate said the addition of this group has improved the economic livelihood of pensioners who have been deprived of their rights for a long period.

Before this addition, PTAD said over 19,500 verified civil service pensioners from the North-West, South-East, North-East and South-South had been reinstated and paid their arrears.

Also ongoing, it added, is the computation of benefits for over 5,000 verified civil service pensioners.

PTAD said this would conclude the “payrolling” of all verified civil service pensioners.

The directorate stated that in January 2018, the Civil Service Pension Department paid N2.215bn to 111,525 pensioners, 219 retired permanent secretaries and heads of service.

It added that N2.216bn was paid in February, and N2.216bn was paid in March.

For the Parastatals Pension Department, which started verification of defunct and privatised agencies in Q4 2017, it added that 98,259 pensioners were paid monthly pension of N4.097bn in January 2018 and that for the month of February, N4.134bn was paid to the pensioners, while N4.117bn was paid in March.

For pensioners verified in Q4 2017 and Q1 2018 under the Parastatal Pension Department (FHA, NNN, NICON, Nigerian-Re, DSC & NITEL/Mtel) the directorate stated that the accurate computation of their benefits is currently being done.

“Over 30,000 pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme, who had yet to be payrolled over the years have been cleared and added to PTAD payroll post verification of the civil service, police, customs, immigration and prisons pensioners across the country,” PTAD stated. LR News
