Spokeperson for the Traditional Council of Gbaramatu kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, has warned his Ijaw kinsmen to be wary of soldiers during Saturday polls.
He said the Pere of Gbaramatu kingdom, Oboro Gbaraun 11, Aketakpe, Agadagba, has admonished that all Ijaws and Itsekiris, in particular, should maintain the existing peace during Saturday polls because, according to him, soldiers are trained to kill.
Gbenekama, who’s the Fiyewei of Gbaramatu kingdom, in a statement made available to Tribune Online on Thursday, urged the soldiers and other security agencies to maintain that sense of professionalism they displayed in Warri South West during the last Presidential and National Assembly elections.
“The Pere of Gbaramatu kingdom has directed that we must ensure that we maintain the existing peace so that we do not give the security agents the opportunity to maltreat us.
“Their training and calling is killing of criminals, that is why they go about with guns to scare and deal ‘ruthlessly’ with ‘criminals’.
“We must not allow ourselves to be treated as common criminals; as law-abiding citizens of this country, we should mobilise to our communities to cast our votes and also ensure that our votes count by peacefully protecting our votes,” the Gbaramatu chief entreated.
He, however, called on those urging the Federal Government to militarise the Niger Delta on Saturday to desist, noting that the region is already perpetually under military siege.
