A 22-year-old bus conductor, Olajide Oyenuga, who allegedly burgled his neighbour’s house with an intent to steal, was on Friday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused, of no fixed address is facing a two-count charge of burglary and entering residence with intent to commit felony.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the accused had on Jan. 6, at 8 p.m. burgled his neighbour’s apartment at No. 7, Duru Close in Shomolu area of Lagos.
Oriabure alleged that the accused had entered the apartment of the complainant, Mr Abayomi Odunmada, through the roof of the house.
According to him, the neighbours heard the sound of the roof collapsing and called the attention of the security guard to it.
He further said that it was the guard who reported the burglary to the police.
The offences contravene Sections 307 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 307 and 308 both stipulate seven-year jail term each for the offences.
In her ruling, Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with one responsible surety in like sum.
Ojuromi said the surety should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until Feb. 19 for mention.

A suspect, Okechukwu Nnaji, who allegedly robbed a man of 79 phones worth N3.5 million is to spend the next 11 days  in the Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Magistrate M. I. Dan-Oni remanded Nnaji pending advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The court could not take the plea of the accused as the magistrate said she needed the advice.
She adjourned the case until Jan. 22 for mention.
Nnaji, 38, who resides in Ojo, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and armed robbery.
Earlier, Police Prosecutor Victor Eruada told the court that Nnaji committed the offences on Oct. 26, at the Toyota area on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos.
Eruada said that the accused, armed with a pistol, robbed Mr Ifeanyi Eze of a carton  containing the 79 pieces of phones.
“Eze who was on his way from Ikeja where he went to buy the phones  to his office in Surulere, boarded a bus which the accused was one of the occupants.
“The accused pulled out a pistol to attack him before dispossessing him of his property and, in the process, sprinkled a watery and peppery substance which made him unconscious,” he said.
The alleged offences contravene Sections 297 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Twenty-four hours to the close of the portal for the recruitment of 10,000 police constables, the number of Nigerians that have applied to join the Nigeria Police Force has reached over 294,851.

The recruitment, which began on November 30, 2018, was expected to close on Friday (Today) as required by the Federal Character Commission which stipulated that advertisements for recruitments into Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies must run for six weeks to give applicants enough time to apply.

The spokesman, Police Service Commission, Ikechukwu Ani, said in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, that Niger State maintained its lead with 17,790 applications.

Bayelsa State, on the other hand, kept its last position with 1,797 applications.

The statement said, “As at 12.30pm on Thursday, 294,851 applications have been received. Niger State is followed by Kano with 16,800 and Katsina, 16,666. Lagos State is second from the rear with 1,720 applications, followed by Ebonyi State with 2,218.

“Male applicants continued to dominate the exercise with 255,189 applications with females trailing with only 39,662 applicants.”

Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector General of Police, said after the closure of the portal, the commission would start online short-listing of qualified applicants.

The shortlisted applicants, he added, would thereafter be invited for screening and other stages of the recruitment exercise.
