Argentina’s forward Lionel Messi (C) and Nigeria’s midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo vie for the ball

Nigeria are out of the World Cup after failing to overcome Argentina in their Group D clash at the St Petersburg Stadium.

Nigeria needed a win or a draw to progress, and came into the game with three points against Argentina’s one.

Victory would have guaranteed progress regardless of the outcome of Iceland’s clash with Croatia.

A draw for the Eagles meant they needed Croatia to defeat Iceland or earn a draw.

Although the game started with Argentina on the front foot, the Eagles grew in the game and were able to carve out a lot of chances.

Lionel Messi put his side ahead in the first half, but Nigeria levelled scores in the 51’st minute. Progress was within sight for Nigeria but an 86th-minute strike by Marcos Rojo denied them progress.

Early pressure and possession form the Argentines paid off in the 14th minute when Messi latched onto an Ever Banega ball upfield and gave Sampaoli’s men the lead.

Nigeria were rattled but reacted well and grew in the game.

The Super Eagles felt hard done after the referee refused to award them a penalty for Marcos Rojo’s challenge on Kelechi Iheanacho in the 45th minute.

Four minutes into the second half Nigeria got some reprieve when Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir pointed to the spot after Javier Mascherano tangled with Oghenekaro Etebo at a corner.

Moses confidently stepped up to send Franco Armani the wrong way on his international debut and put Nigeria on course for progress.

Despite giving Argentina the lead, Nigeria were able to deny him the opportunity to influence proceeded as he does brilliantly for Barcelona.

There was further VAR controversy when Nigeria were denied a second penalty when Rojo headed onto his own arm before substitute Odion Ighalo fired wide. Many Nigerians fans would rue Ighalo’s miss.

Ighalo was not done, however, as he missed another glorious chance when he shot too close to Armani and Nigeria were made to pay for their profligacy from the most unlikely source.

Sergio Aguero had been thrown on from the bench to join Messi and Higuain in attack, but it was Rojo who produced a striker’s finish on his weaker right foot to spark delirious scenes of celebration among the tens of thousands of Argentines in the stands.

Although the Super Eagles are out, they put up a fight and matched Argentina for shots and chances.

They had a total of eight shots (three on targets and five off target), compared to Argentina’s seven shots (four on target and three off target).
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.

Nigerians have, however, taken to the social media to hail the national team’s efforts.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Oyo State  on Tuesday dragged Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and five  others before an Oyo State High Court in Ibadan over  the unpaid N42.3 billion gratuities and pensions arrears owed  primary school teachers and local government pensioners.
Joined in the suit were the Oyo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Commissioner for Finance as well as the  Accountant-General and the state’s  Head of Service.
At Tuesday’s  sitting  before Justice Maruf Adegbola, the union’s  counsel, Lasun Sanusi (SAN),  urged the court to direct the Oyo State Government to pay the arrears of the concerned  pensioners.
Sanusi said the primary school teachers and local government pensioners were dying almost  on daily basis  due to difficulty in getting medications for their various health challenges.
The counsel also  told the court that an agreement was  reached between  the state government and the pensioners that the arrears would be paid in instalments, praying that  this be  made a consent judgment.
He  said since the  state  government was not denying that  it was its  responsibility to pay the said  money, his clients were urging the court to give its  judgment.
The counsel also said that other respondents in the suit had been served except Ajimobi, urging   the court to grant his ex-parte motion seeking  its leave  to serve the governor by substituted means.
The counsel suggested that the governor be served through the state’s  Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, being the chief law officer of the state.
Adegbola consequently granted the ex-parte motion and ordered that the processes be served on the governor through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.
The judge  said that the processes and other documents  to be filed in the matter be taken to  the Office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.
He adjourned the case till July 11 for hearing.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that  none of the respondents was in court.
NAN also reports that the  pensioners, who had trooped to  the court,  called on the state government to urgently pay their pension arrears and gratuities.
Representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state also  attended the court sitting. LR News

A new Commissioner of Police, Mr Bala Ciroma, has been posted to Plateau State.

This was confirmed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Office in the state, DSP Tyopev Mathias Terna on Tuesday (June, 26, 2018).

According to the statement, before Ciroma assumed the new office, he was the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID) in Abuja.

Although reasons for the development were not stated by the Police, it comes in the wake of fresh attacks in the north-central state.

Mass Killings

At least 86 persons were confirmed killed by suspected herdsmen during an attack on Gashish district of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area at the weekend.

Tyopev told Channels Television on Sunday that six people were also injured while at least 50 houses, two vehicles, and 15 motorcycles were razed.

He confirmed the casualty figure and destruction after a search and rescue team from the Plateau State Police Command visited the communities affected by Saturday’s attack.

Six villages attacked by the assailants are Xlands, Gindin Akwati, Ruku, Nhgar, Kura Falls and Kakuruk, all in Gashish.

Plateau State, which had previously enjoyed relative peace, has recently been hit by series of attacks mainly perpetrated by suspected herdsmen, resulting in the death of several persons.

Call For Calm

Reacting to the resurgence, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has asked the Federal Government to review Nigeria’s security architecture in a bid to stem the rate of killings in the country.

CAN made the demand on Monday in a statement by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the group’s president, (Rev) Samson Ayokunle.

The association lamented that despite assurances and promises by President Muhammadu Buhari that his government was committed to the safety of lives and property of Nigerians, “coordinated and premeditated” attacks have continued in Plateau and other states.

Furthermore, it called on the Federal Government not to rest on its oars until the perpetrators of the attacks are brought to book.

President Buhari, on the other hand, had accused politicians of taking advantage of the herdsmen-farmers’ crisis across the country for their personal gains.

In a statement on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said that although a number of geographical and economic factors are contributing to the longstanding herdsmen/farmers clashes, politicians were taking advantage of the situation.

He, however, called for calm in the troubled state.

While describing the attacks as painful and regrettable, the President assured residents that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The state governor, Mr Simon Lalong, also assured residents that the government remains committed to their security and that it is doing everything possible to ensure that perpetrators are not spared.

The U.S. Supreme Court, ruling 5-4 has upheld President Donald Trump’s ban on travel from several mostly Muslim countries, rejecting a challenge that it discriminated against Muslims or exceeded his authority.
The decision Tuesday was the court’s first substantive ruling on a Trump administration policy, the Associated Press reported.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, joined by his four conservative colleagues.
Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court read the majority ruling favouring Trump’s travel ban
Roberts wrote that presidents have substantial power to regulate immigration. He also rejected the challengers’ claim of anti-Muslim bias.
The court may have signalled its eventual approval in December, when the justices allowed the policy to take full effect even as the court fight continued and lower courts had ruled it out of bounds.
Roberts was careful not to endorse either Trump’s provocative statements about immigration in general and Muslims in particular.
“We express no view on the soundness of the policy,” Roberts wrote.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in a dissent that based on the evidence in the case “a reasonable observer would conclude that the Proclamation was motivated by anti-Muslim animus.” She said her colleagues arrived at the opposite result by “ignoring the facts, misconstruing our legal precedent, and turning a blind eye to the pain and suffering the Proclamation inflicts upon countless families and individuals, many of whom are United States citizens.”
Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan also dissented.

President Muhammadu Buhari says the Federal Government is committed to boosting Nigeria’s economy through Agricultural revolution and is already recording progress.

The President made this statement on Tuesday while commissioning the automated rice seed and seedling factory in Cross Rivers State capital, Calabar.

He applauded the Cross Rivers state Governor, Ben Ayade, over his contribution to Federal Government’s Agricultural revolution.

“When we assumed the reins of leadership of our dear country, this administration launched a zero oil economic roadmap as a way of making our country less dependent on oil while encouraging investment in other sectors of the economy, particularly agriculture.

“Indeed this factory speaks loudly about the giant strides we are making in agriculture as a country. This monumental project for which we are gathered here today is a marvel to behold.”

The automated seed and seedling factory is believed to be the first in Africa and the President is confident that the seedlings from the factory will improve rice production and sufficiency nationwide.

“The factory which is said to be the first in Africa is an automated plant with a capacity to produce high yielding vitaminised and disease resisting rice seedling.

“What we expect is that the seedlings from this factory will improve rice yield from current nation three to four tonnes to about nine to 10 tonnes per hectare to ensure rice sufficiency in the country,” he said.

President Buhari said further Governor Ayade is establishing various people-oriented projects because he has keyed into the Federal Government’s revolutionary vision.

“I must say that visiting the state (Cross Rivers) for the second time within three years in connection with people oriented and the flagship project of Governor Ayade is very welcomed and very satisfying to me.” LR News

Reports say that two Israeli missiles fired by Israel have landed near Damascus International Airport late Monday.
The state-run Syrian media reported that the missiles hit an arms depot belonging to the Lebanese Shiite Movement Hezbollah.
According to the media, the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Rahman, confirmed early Tuesday.
Syrian opposition sources said the midnight attack targeted an Iranian cargo plane which was landing at Damascus International Airport.
There was no immediate word on casualties.
Damascus residents told dpa they had heard several loud blasts shortly after midnight coming from near the airport.
Israel has said that it will not tolerate Iran, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, seeking to establish permanent military bases in Syria.
Syrian state-run news agency SANA, which routinely accuses Israel of helping rebels, said the strikes came as Syrian forces made advances against rebels in the southern province of Daraa.
Israel usually does not comment on the strikes it is alleged to have carried out in Syria.
Syrian and Iranian military facilities in the war-torn country have been hit several times since April. Iran has vowed retaliation for one alleged Israeli strike on April 30 that killed a number of Iranian personnel.
Iran and their Hezbollah-backed movement have been fighting alongside Syrian government forces since the conflict started in 2011. dpa/LR News

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered massive transfer of police personnel in Zamfara state as part of deliberate measures to address cases of armed banditry in the state.
The President disclosed this when a delegation of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria visited him at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.
President Muhammadu Buhari tells his visitors of massive shake-up in Zamfara Police. Idoko, Jamilu Mu’Azu Haidara, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu
President Buhari was reacting to the burning issue of violent conflicts in some parts of country.
Latest Reality Metro reports that Zamfara state has been battling cattle rustling and kidnapping in recent months.
Armed bandits and cattle thieves have been terrorizing villages in the state in the past months with many innocent citizens killed and villages burnt or destroyed.
Our correspondence reports that worried by persistent killings, Gov. Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara State had on June 15 said he had dropped his responsibility as Chief Security Officer of the state as he had no control over security machinery in the state.
Yari said that his decision was occasioned by the seeming helplessness of his administration and the people to check the persistent killings in the state.
He, therefore, frowned at the prevailing situation in the state where as the chief security officer of the state he could not take decisions on strategies for protecting the state and its people, and had it implemented.
However, President Buhari told the Shari’ah delegation that he was putting in his best to address all security challenges in Zamfara and other parts of the country.
He said that following his dissatisfaction with the performance of the Police in Zamfara State, he ordered a massive transfer of officers and men who had stayed three years and above in the troubled State.
The President also revealed that he had received a “stiff bill” from the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for the restoration of the dilapidated infrastructure and facilities of the Federal Government-owned radio stations in all states of the federation.
He pledged that something would be done about the situation.
Spokesman of the delegation and the Vice-President of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, Sheikh Hadiyyatullahi Abdulrashid, had commended President Buhari for his efforts toward uplifting the quality of life of all Nigerians.
He, however, appealed to the President to address the pathetic state of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Kaduna
