The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that the process for the extraditing former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke from the United Kingdom has begun.
Acting Spokesman of the commission, Mr Tony Orilade, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
There have been calls from different quotas for the extradition of the former minister over several allegations of impropriety against her.
According to Orilade, EFCC’s Operations Department has made presentation to the Legal Department to commence the process, and that process has commenced.
He, however, said that the action had to be processed through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, explaining that it was not something the commission would commence and conclude on its own.
“It is ongoing. Within the next few weeks, the extent to which we have gone will be made known to the public.
“It is not a fresh case; it is not a fresh petition that is just being looked into; the whole process is a total package.
“This extradition is just an aspect of Deziani’s investigation and commencement of trial,” he said.
In 2017, a Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the final forfeiture of N7.6 billion alleged loot recovered from the former minister to the Federal Government.
Justice Abdulazeez Anka granted an application by the EFCC seeking the final forfeiture of the money to the government.
Granting the application, the judge had said: “I have read the motion on notice seeking the final forfeiture of the sum of N7.6 billion reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity.
“I have also gone through the affidavit in support of the application.
“In the circumstances, I am of the view that the application has merit and is hereby granted as prayed. Parties have a right of appeal.”
In October, 2017, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had said that Nigeria had no immediate plan to bring Allison-Madueke back home to face trial.
Allison-Madueke, who is being investigated in the UK, had urged the Federal Government to bring her back to the country to face corruption charges against her.
But, Malami said that bringing her back to the country would jeopardise the investigation being carried on her in the UK.
“Steps have been taken by the United Kingdom authorities on issues bothering on corrupt practices involving Nigerians.
“If Nigeria feels strongly that there is need to bring Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke here to face charges of corruption, government will not hesitate to do that.
“As things stand now, there is no need for that since the UK Government is already investigating her,’’ he had said.
The EFCC spokesman could not, however, say the point at which it became necessary to seek extradition of the former minister.

Deputy Commandant of the Peace Corps receiving the award on behalf of the Commandant

Youth based organisation, Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has bagged an award as ‘Most Endorsed Initiative in the 8th National Assembly’, by the Nigeria Assembly News, a news platform for legislative activities across the country.
At the award ceremony which held in Abuja on Saturday, the project coordinator for the platform, Omoboye Adeboye, said the Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps as passed by both chambers was the most popular and widely endorsed legislative piece in the entire 8th Assembly.
While recognizing the corps for the milestone, Adeboye thanked the leadership of the organisation for coming up with such a laudable and youth attractive initiative.
He said that it was because the bill was indispensable that it received massive endorsement from both chambers of the National Assembly.
The Peace Corps of Nigeria Bill was passed by the National Assembly but was however rejected by President Muhammadu Buhari who insisted that there was no fund for the corps and that it would amount to duplication of roles.
Deputy National Commandant of Peace Corps, Dr Edet Ekpeyong, while receiving the award on behalf of the Corps, thanked members of the National Assembly for the resounding support accorded the Bill.
Though President Muhammad Buhari declined assent to the Bill, but Ekpeyong said he was optimistic that the dream of founding fathers of PCN and lawmakers who passed the Bill would soon come to reality.
In his reaction, National Commandant of Peace Corps, Amb. (Dr.) Dickson Akoh, said the award, like numerous others received this year, was dedicated to Nigerian youths and President Buhari.
Akoh, who as running mate to the APC governorship candidate in Benue state, told our correspondent that he has never lost hope about the establishment of Nigerian Peace Corps.
“I am happy that Nigerians, including the lawmakers appreciate the importance of Peace Corps of Nigeria. That alone supersedes what some few individuals think they can do to us.
“They thought they have won by sealing off our office, despite several court orders, or by telling lies against us, but God has vindicated us as the organisation turns out to be enjoying public endorsement,” he said.
He expressed optimism that President Buhari would re-visit the bill and give it his assent.
Other who received various awards at the ceremony include: Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai, Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Jaiz Bank, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Senators and members of the House of Representatives.

The musician made the announcement at the debut convention of the Modern Democratic Party (MDP) in Lagos. He said he was aware it would not be easy to run given who he would be running against.
“It is with the greatest sense of humility, purpose and destiny that I humbly announce to run for the 2019 Federal House of Representatives.
“I am under no illusions that this run will be easy considering who we are going up against, this is almost impossible.”
NAN reported the award singer picked the slogan ‘Hope 19’ and entrusted the election process on ‘hope’.
“You see, my entire life has been a story of just dreaming dreams, praying about those dreams, setting goals and working until they come true. I can live with trying and failing, I can’t live with not trying.
“They said we don’t have the money to run, we say our strength lies in our numbers, they said we dont have the structure, we say we will attempt to build it, they said ‘what if you lose’? I say what if we win?”
“So why we may not have a godfather we do have God, vision, intellectual capacity, integrity, right intentions and last but not least, a whole lot of ‘Hope’.
“At the end of the day, ‘Hope’ may be all we have, but I believe it is all we need.”

“Eti Osa houses many rich people in Nigeria, therefore for Nigeria to work Eti Osa must work.
“We want to fix Nigeria, But we must begin by fixing our communities.
“Our generation needs a realistic rallying point, we need to begin in communities, earn our way into the system and up the ladder”.

Christy Essien-Igbokwe: remembered on her 58th birthday
She was the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and managing director of Soul Train Entertainment Limited.
Christy, who was born in Okat, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, grew up in Aba, Abia state, after losing her mother, when she was just 12 years old.
In Aba, she was raised by her mother’s friend, who also inspired her singing career, by buying her a fairly used cassette player to record her songs.
But Christy started off first as an actress featuring on ‘The New Masquerade’, a popular drama series in the 1970s. She played the role of Akpenor, the wife of the cantankerous character, Jegede Sokoya (played by Claude Eke).
Her role on that popular show put her in the limelight and in 1977 she launched a professional music career by releasing her debut album called ‘Freedom’. Many of her albums became hit records, but none came close to the success of her 1981 hit album ‘Ever Liked My Person’ produced by Lemmy Jackson.
