Suspected offa robbery gang leaders

The Police have arrested two out of the four suspected leaders of the criminal gang that carried out the deadly Offa bank robbery.

Kunle Ogunleye aka Arrow, 35, and Michael Adikwu were arrested at separate locations in Kwara State where they allegedly carried out the robbery on April 5, leaving many dead and shocking the nation.

They were among the four men the police declared wanted on May 4, after labelling them the principal suspects in the robbery.

The Police Force Public Relations Officer Jimoh Moshood said in a statement on Monday that Ogunleye was arrested on Sunday in Oro Town, while Adikwu was arrested two weeks ago.

Both men were arrested by the Joint Investigation Team.

According to the statement, Adikwu, a native of Apa LGA in Benue State, is a dismissed police corporal and an ex-convict.

He was arrested, tried and dismissed from the Force and charged to court by the Police in 2012 in Kwara State for criminal conspiracy and aiding the escape from lawful custody of armed robbery suspects, the statement said.

He was subsequently jailed and spent three years in prison before finding his way out in 2015, the police added.

After Adikwu regained his freedom, the statement said “he became a vicious and notorious gang leader of armed robbery syndicate wanted for several armed robberies in Kwara and other states of the North Central and South West”.

“The two suspects have confessed to the crime and admitted to the various criminal roles they played in the Offa banks robbery. They will be charged to court on completion of the investigation,” the police said.

Their arrest brings to 22 the number of suspects the police have arrested in connection with the bank robbery.

The police thanked the public for their support in the arrest of suspects and called for information that can lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.

Also, the police promised to protect and reward informants while also recalling the N5 million reward the Kwara State government promised anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the suspects.

The INEC Electoral Officer, Mrs Idowu Olayemi, made this disclosure at a stakeholders’ meeting, organised by the commission in Abuja, on Monday.
According to Olayemi, the 5, 730 PVCs that were ready for collection in six centres within the council, were for those who registered in 2017 only.
She explained that only those who registered in Bwari central and Kuduru wards should collect theirs at the Bwari INEC office.
She further explained that those who registered at Kubuwa- Byagyin, Dutse, Usuma and Ushafa wards should collect theirs at the distributing centres within the wards respectively.
Others, she added, are Shere, Kawu, Idu wards in the council.
Olayemi also noted that no one was permitted to collect the cards by proxy.
She said all registered voters must go to their various centres to collect their cards and they should not send anyone to collect the cards for them.
The officer also stated that the commission was still expecting more PVCs from the 2017 registration, as the cards were coming in batches.
She encouraged those who might not be able to collect theirs in the first batch to remain patient as all the cards would be available before the 2019 elections.
According to her, the exercise has so far not encountered any challenge but smooth with an impressive turnout on a daily basis.
Olayemi also said that the registration was ongoing until December or until further directive from the INEC headquarters to stop the exercise.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by representatives of the security agencies in the council, political party executives and newsmen among others. LR News

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has emphasised the importance of obedience to God’s word and instruction noting that they are essential for successful nation-building.

According to him, the church has its role to play in nation building. Creativity, innovation and hard work, according to him are also vital instruments which the church needs to focus on to move the nation forward.

He made this remark during a special Sunday Service at the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly in Abuja.

“It is the church that transforms everywhere. That creativity that God commanded us to do everywhere is what will change our nation. Our creativity, innovation and hard work, and this is a command. So if we obey God, our nation will change.

“There are many countries all over the world with huge resources and many other countries that have no resources. It is creativity that makes the difference,” he said.

Professor Osinbajo also asked the church to continue to emphasise the virtues of hard work and diligence particularly at a time when young Nigerians need guidance on understanding the meaning of true success.

“Sometimes when we hear what is being preached in churches it’s almost as if life is to be lived by miracles and that people don’t really need to put in any work.

“The reality is that true success is line by line, precept by precept, building block upon building block, hard work innovation, character, that’s the measure of true success and somebody has to teach that because that is what the church has always been known for.”

Muslim insurgents detonated more than 20 homemade explosives across Thailand’s south, the army said Monday, in a night of violence undermining junta claims of headway in peace talks with the rebels.

The mainly Buddhist kingdom’s southern border provinces have been plagued by a 14-year fight between ethnic Malay militants and the Thai state that has left nearly 7,000 dead.

On Sunday suspected rebels launched their most sweeping attack in recent months, striking 14 ATM booths, two electricity poles and other public spaces and security posts.

No one was killed by the blasts, which went off across the four Muslim-majority provinces bordering Malaysia, but the coordinated offensive marked a brazen challenge to the ruling junta’s efforts at peace negotiations.

“They always look for a way to create chaos and inconvenience,” army spokesman Colonel Pramote Prom-in said of the insurgents.

“This time they went after the easy targets,” he added.

Attacks are common during the Muslim fasting period of Ramadan, which began last week.

Pramote brushed aside a question on whether the violence would effect the junta’s ongoing talks with a group that claims to represent the rebels.

The military recently said the two sides had made progress in designating a “safe zone” in one district of the insurgency-roiled region.

But analysts have long doubted that the rebel interlocutors have genuine sway over fighters on the ground.

“It’s (the rebels’) way of reminding the Thai security apparatus that they have the will and capacity to discredit them,” Don Pathan, a Thailand-based independent analyst, told AFP.

“And a reminder that they are not part of the so-called peace process,” he added.

It remains unclear how a change of guard in Malaysia, where elections brought a new government to power earlier this month, will affect the negotiations that have been facilitated by Kuala Lumpur.

The culturally distinct “Deep South” was annexed by Thailand more than 100 years ago and has incubated waves of secessionist bloodshed.

The latest flare-up reignited in 2004, with violence playing out far from Thailand’s tourist destinations and garnering little international attention.

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three men for allegedly beheading a commercial motorcycle (okada) rider, Olawale Gbogi.

The police gave the names of the suspects as Abdulahi Sheu, Harruna Suberu and Onimisi Liberty.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the suspects allegedly hired the services of the victim from Ikare Akoko, in the Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State, to take them to Ihima, Kogi State, for a sum of N3,000.

According to the PPRO, on getting to Ihima, the suspects directed the victim towards a bush path where he was allegedly beaten up and dispossessed of his motorcycle and mobile phone.

He added that the victim was killed and beheaded by one Rabiu, who was at large.

“Immediately the command got a report of the incident, we swung into action which led to the arrest of Sheu in Akure with the victim’s handset and the motorcycle.

“The head of the victim was allegedly taken to the house of one Dada Alabi, a herbalist, by Onimisi Liberty. But he (Alabi) refused to take it from him. The head is said to be in the possession of Rabiu, while the other body parts of the victim have not been found,” Joseph said. LR News

Edo school loses 100 students to traffickers. Above Some Nigerian girls rescued in the Mediterranean Sea

No fewer than 100 students of Idogbo Secondary School, Benin, were lost to human traffickers  in  the last four months.
This was disclosed in Benin on Sunday during an advocacy programme by Solomon Okoduwa, the Senior Special Assistant to Gov Godwin Obaseki on Human trafficking and illegal migration.
Okoduwa said this fact was disclosed  to him by some teachers in the school, concerned about how the institution has become the harvesting ground for traffickers.
Okoduwa  said government will not allow the evil to continue to thrive in the state.
Government will  step up its campaign against trafficking, he said, and the state Task Force Against Human Trafficking will be on the trail of the  human traffickers.
He warned  the students to be wary of the antics of the traffickers who are bent on deceiving them into embarking on the dangerous journey.
“Henceforth, report anyone who tells you to travel to Europe. They are simply taking you through Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea and you may eventually end up in Libya.
“The number of students that have been trafficked from your school in this short period is overwhelming.
“The truth is that many of them might have been imprisoned there or facing one challenge or the other.
“Taking the route of Sahara Desert and other illegal routes is hellish.
“Many died of hunger,  many were drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in search of greener pastures.
“Worst still, the families  of those people that died on their journey were  made to pay for the travel expenses, when unknown to them  their loved ones have gone to the great beyond.
“If anyone tells you to travel abroad through Libya,  tell him or her capital ‘NO’.  If you must travel for any reason,  travel the right way.”
Latest Reality Metro reports that the state government had received no fewer than 3,400 Libya returnees within the last six months.
