Five Governorship aspirants of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State on Friday passed a vote of no confidence on the party’s State Chairman, Hassan Hyat, for allegedly favouring a particular aspirant ahead of the party’s primaries.
The aspirants who addressed a press conference in Kaduna under the aegis of the Forum of PDP Governorship Aspirants, kicked against the alleged imposition of one of the aspirants by some members of the State Working Committee (SWC).
The disgruntled aspirants include Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi, Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Sidi, Ramalan Yero, Muhammed Sani-Bello and Dr Shuaibu Idris-Mikati.
Ahmed Maiyaki, head of Media team for Sani-Sidi, who spoke on their behalf said the aspirants have appealed to the party’s national leadership to take charge of affairs in the state to avoid crisis during the primary election.
”The forum deems it a duty to intimate the national leadership of our great party, teeming party members, supporters and the general public on the following concerns:
‘‘Prior to and after losing the 2015 general elections, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) had never been a more ‘cherished bride’ with the prospects of winning almost all the elective posts in Kaduna State than now with more people willing to join and participate actively in rescuing our state and the nation at large.
”As democrats, the Forum insists that power must truly return to the people through open and transparent process anchored on internal democratic process in our great party.
“The forum also observes with dismay the deliberate attempt to subvert the democratic process ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial primaries slated for the 28th of September, 2018.
“The Forum condemns strongly the activities of the Kaduna State Chairman of our Party, Hon Felix Hassan Hyet, who has openly attached himself to one of the gubernatorial aspirants, which is against the norm and the principle of fair play.”
The forum accused the state chairman of openly working against the aspirations of the other gubernatorial aspirants in favour of his ‘anointed candidate’.
The aspirants claimed that the chairman had been promised the position of a running mate to the favoured aspirant.
“After the recent congresses in which ad-hoc delegates were elected, the State Chairman threw caution to the wind by tampering with delegate lists of several Local Governments areas sent to the State Party Secretariat to the advantage of his ‘anointed one’.
“There is great tension in the State as a result of the partiality of the Party Chairman; whereby the bright prospects of “bringing back” Kaduna State to the PDP is in jeopardy.
“Forum further notes, the attempt by the Party Chairman to surreptitiously foist the preferred candidate using a certain group called “Southern Kaduna Stakeholders Chairmen Forum”.
‘’This act is capable of destabilising the party and its prospect in the 2019 polls and undermining the efforts of the aspirants to find consensus among themselves.
”In view of the above, the Forum humbly requests the National leadership of our great party to take full charge of the Party’s activities in Kaduna State, in order to rescue the situation and restore the confidence of majority of Party members and loyalists in the state once more.
“The Forum also calls on teeming party members, delegates and supporters to resist all attempts to subvert democratic process and vote for aspirants of their choice.
“The Forum wishes to reassure all that discussions are ongoing to reach a consensus among the aspirants.” LR News

The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, has defended his decision to skip the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Shittu explained that although he did not submit himself for youth service, he has not broken any law.

He said as a Minister, he has performed ‘higher service’ to the country.
The Minister said this on Friday in Abuja, at the screening exercise conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the party primaries where he is hoping to pick up the APC ticket to run for the seat of Oyo State governor.
Shittu said despite not having an NYSC certificate he has performed higher service to the country and therefore he is qualified to contest and win elections.
Shittu’s reaction follows a report by an online news organisation, Premium Times, that the minister skipped the compulsory programme despite graduating from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU) at age 25.
Premium Times has earlier reported that after months of discreet checks at the NYSC headquarters, it was discovered that the communications minister did not present himself for service after graduation and is yet to do so till date.
He also admitted that he did not serve but claimed he thought his first political post after graduation could suffice as national service.
The report that Shittu did not do the mandatory NYSC is coming barely a week after Kemi Adeosun resigned because the NYSC exemption certificate she presented was fake.

Dr. Maikanti Baru, NNPC GMD

The Management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC on Friday said it does not run any opaque account with the commercial banks and there was neither $470.5m or N8billion of its money hidden anywhere.
The state oil company was reacting that a sensational report by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris that its men helped to trace the money in some unidentified banks.
He said the money was kept there to avoid the Treasury Single Account policy of government.
The corporation said the police got their report mixed up.
In a Statement by spokesman Ndu Ughamadu, the the NNPC countered with an informed perspective about the money, dismissing the police angle as not only misplaced but equally misleading.
While confirming that a few commercial banks are yet to complete remittance of US dollar deposits to the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Ughamadu stated unequivocally that the Corporation had no funds hidden in any commercial bank.
He said the Presidency, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, (AGF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) were fully aware of, and received periodic status reports on balances yet to be remitted to TSA by commercial banks.
According to him, following TSA implementation, the Corporation had made a report to the Presidency on the failure of some commercial banks to complete transfer of US dollar deposits and a Presidential directive was issued for the Central Bank of Nigeria to ensure that the funds were completely transferred to the Corporation’s Treasury Single Account in US dollars.
“Most of the commercial banks have since complied with the Presidential directive and completed transfer to the Corporation’s Treasury Single Account in US dollars, including the reported $470.5 million.
“On the purported recovery of N8 billion by the Nigeria Police Force, the Corporation is not aware of any change in the subsisting Presidential directive to the effect that all of the US dollar balances must be transferred to NNPC’s CBN Treasury Single Account in US dollars. In addition, no such funds have been deposited into the Corporation’s CBN Treasury Single Account.
“Consequently, NNPC’s record of the US dollar funds still yet to be transferred by a few commercial banks cannot reflect the said recovery.
“While the Central Bank of Nigeria executes the Presidential directive to ensure complete transfer of US dollar funds to the Corporation’s CBN Treasury Single Account, it is pertinent to reiterate our earlier position that NNPC will resist every attempt to subject these funds, which have been in the full view of Government, to five percent whistle blowing fees as this would be unreasonable and a sheer waste of public funds.
“The NNPC noted that as an entity with fiduciary responsibility to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, its commitment to transparency and accountability remains unwavering”.

The Presidency has described Senate President Bukola Saraki as dangerous and someone who is capable of going to any length to protect his personal interests.

Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, said this in a statement on Thursday, in reaction to what he described as ‘derogatory speeches’ by Saraki.

“Throughout his political career, Senator Saraki has shown that he is a very dangerous person who can go any length to promote his personal interests. The language of his campaign is such that cannot be used against a domestic help,” he said.

The Senate President, who is a presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, had repeated his criticism of the Buhari administration when he visited Bayelsa State on Thursday.

According to Saraki, things have never been so bad in the country and there is the need to rescue it in 2019.

But the Presidency wondered why the Senate President is now making negative remarks about the President who he once respected and worked with in the build-up to the election and in the subsequent.

“Is he just knowing that the President lacked vision? This is someone that the Senator had worked with very closely for more than three years,” Shehu said.

“Amazingly, he never said all that he is now saying against him (the President). Rather, his word for and on the President were always respectful and reassuring. That’s the man he called “My Father”… What then changed, all of a sudden?

“Is he saying these blatantly false and crude things against the President because he is running for the same office? Could it be that he is targeting President Buhari because the party he just joined does not have any real issues to highlight?”.

The president’s aide, however, appealed to Buhari’s supporters to ignore the comments.

He said, “our appeal to our supporters is to ignore Saraki and any such politicians bent on lowering the quality of political discourse. Let them drown in their own waters”.

British mathematician Michael Atiyah claims he has a “simple proof’’ for the Riemann hypothesis, which has been one of the greatest challenges in maths since German mathematician Bernhard Riemann brought it out in 1859.
According to a tweet posted by the Heidelberg Laureate Forum, a networking event for mathematicians and computer scientists from the entire world, the British-Lebanese mathematician will address the forum on Sept. 24 and show the world his proof of the hypothesis.
“Will he be presenting a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis? Yes, that is what his abstract says,’’ read the tweet.
The Riemann hypothesis is modern math’s Holy Grail.
Although it is almost incomprehensible for people without intensive math training, it describes the distribution of prime numbers among positive integers.
Prime numbers, very simple by definition, are the building blocks of modern mathematics, especially number theory.
Achievements in prime number theory have been widely applied to computer sciences and telecommunications.
However prime numbers are also mysterious and inexplicable, in what pattern does a prime number emerge in the line of positive integers has remained elusive to generations of mathematicians.
Riemann proposed a theory that can, in a way, shed light on that mystery; meanwhile he could not prove it neither could all the brilliant minds that came after.
In 2000, the Clay Mathematical Institute announced the Millennium Prize Problems, seven of the most difficult problems still eluding mathematicians at the turn of the millennium.
These problems were so important that solving any one would win a mathematician 1 million dollars.
Also because the Riemann hypothesis is so difficult, many mathematicians have decided to go ahead with their research and have developed over 1,000 theorems based the assumption that the hypothesis is correct.
Report says if it is proven, it will be a huge relief to many.
Atiyah, 79 years old, is considered as one of the greatest living mathematicians and has won almost all possible prizes in mathematics.
Now the entire community of science is holding its breath for Atiyah to present his proof and to see whether it holds.
If it does, it will be the greatest achievement in mathematics in decades.

Troops from the 3 Division of the Nigerian army have embarked on a search and rescue operation of retired Major General Idris Alkali, who went missing on September 3.

Commander of the division and leader of the mission, Brigadier-General Umar Mohammed, told Channels Television on Thursday that the troops had been deployed to Dura Du in Jos South local government area of Plateau State.

According to him, following a preliminary investigation, the vehicle of the missing officer was seen close to a pond in the area.

He said, “Based on credible intelligence, we had to come here. We have been here for the past one week. We are trying to find an officer who is still declared missing that is Major General M. Alkali (retired)”.

Mohammed, who is also the Chief of Staff of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), said the military will do its best to unravel the circumstances behind the retired officer’s disappearance.

He explained that the military had also received information that some vehicles had been pushed into the said pond.

Consequently, Mohammed stated that the Force will do its best to find the missing officer even if it meant draining the pond.

“We came here for the past three days seeing if we could salvage anything from the river. But this river, being a mining site is very deep. You can see that we have a crane. At the last resort, we have now decided that we will evacuate the water from the pond so that we can see what is inside,” he said.

The retired general was said to have been travelling from Abuja to Bauchi in a black Corolla vehicle on September 3 before he went missing.

Efforts to reach him, proved abortive as his phone was switched off.
