Two suspected cases of monkeypox have been reported in Lagos State and are currently being investigated, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris has said.

Dr Idris told journalists at a news conference on Monday that it has become necessary to sensitise residents about the viral disease which has been reported in some states.

“Though no confirmed case has been recorded, there is the need to sensitize members of the public and provide adequate information on measures for prevention and control of the disease in line with the policy of the State Government,” he said.

While assuring residents of the state that measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of the virus, he urged residents to be vigilant and maintain “high personal and environmental hygiene”.

“I need to state that though there is no specific vaccine for the disease, vaccination against Smallpox has been proven to be 85 percent effective in preventing Monkeypox.

There is also no specific anti-viral therapy for Monkeypox, however, the disease is self-limiting and could be managed conservatively,” he said.

“The preventive measures to be taken against the spread of the disease include; avoiding close contact with infected people; avoiding consumption of bushmeat and dead animals; cooking of meat and meat product thoroughly before eating and washing hands with soap and running water frequently and thoroughly.”

Monkeypox is a rare viral zoonotic disease (from animal to man) caused by Monkeypox virus which occurs primarily in Central and West Africa close to the tropical rainforest where there is frequent contact with infected animals.

The symptoms in human are similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients although less severe.

The police in Nasarawa State have arrested two brothers, Umar and Musa Ali for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl at Tudun Lambaga in the Eggon Hills area, Eggon Local Government Area of the state.

The victim, identified as Esther, was reportedly ambushed and assaulted by the suspects at a secluded part of the road on September 16, 2017.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kennedy Idirisu, confirmed that Umar and Musa had been apprehended following a complaint by Esther’s parents.

Narrating her ordeal in an interview with Northern City News in Lafia, Esther stated that she was with four others when the incident happened.

She said she and the others had earlier ignored the boys when they approached them, but the duo subsequently ambushed them at a lonely and secluded part of the road where they threatened her with a knife and cutlass.

Esther said, “On our way down from the hills when we passed by the settlement of the Fulani, we saw the Fulani people and my brother’s wife greeted them but they did not respond.

“As we were going, I stopped to strap my niece properly on my back and I saw the Fulani boys. My brother’s wife asked why they were running after us and one of them said all they wanted was sex and that if we refused they would kill us.

“I was crying and pleading and my brother’s wife was also pleading with them. She even removed her clothes saying that she was sick and that she was on her way to the hospital.

“They said they were not interested in her, that they wanted me and they must have sex with me. I refused to have sex with them, but after they threatened me with a knife and machete, I had to succumb. The first one raped me by the roadside, while the second one carried me to the bush and also raped me,” Esther narrated.

A middle-aged cattle rearer, Auwalu Idi, has been remanded in Katsina prison for allegedly stealing 22 cows and one sheep entrusted to his care.

The animals were allegedly stolen during an armed robbery attack by some hoodlums at a grazing camp in Zamfara State.

The police told a Katsina Senior Magistrates’ Court that Idi’s absence and movement during the robbery operation made him a prime suspect in the incident.

Idi was accused of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and armed robbery, offences which, according to the police, were contrary to Section 97 (312)  of the Penal Code and Section 1(a)(b) of the Robbery  and Firearms (Special provisions) Act, Cap R11,LFN,2004.

The accused, who was arraigned before the magistrates’ court, had reportedly told police interrogators that he was out looking for a missing cow when the armed robbers carted away the livestock.

The police, however, said Idi was discovered to have sold the missing cows at Danmusa cattle  market for N133,000 which he, allegedly handed over to the cattle owner after interrogation.

The Police First Information Report read in the courtroom said some cattle rustlers stormed the grazing site at about 1.30am on September 17, 2017, but the accused was nowhere to be found during the attack.

The cattle rustlers, who were said to be armed, allegedly  attacked and wounded the 20-year-old son of the owner of the livestock, Lawal Sani, who was the only one with the animals at the grazing site.

The FIR added, “Idi is strongly suspected to have conspired with cattle rustlers, attacked  the said 20-year-old Lawal Sani, and stole the livestock which value is yet to be ascertained.”

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sani Ado, told the court that investigation was still in progress and pleaded for an adjournment.

The presiding senior magistrate, AbdulKareem Umar, directed that Idi should be remanded in the prison custody till November 27, 2017 when the case is expected to come up for mention.

The Initiator and Chairman, Movement for Nigeria’s Total Transformation, Chief Areoye Oyebola, has decried the non-responsiveness of Nigerian federal lawmakers to the widespread call for the downward review of their “monumental salaries and allowances.”

According to Oyebola, the recent criticism of the federal legislators by the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), was just one of many criticisms that had trailed the lawmakers over the years but to which they had turned deaf ears.

He recalled that he had raised the same issue in a publication, tagged, “Grave Issues Nigeria Must Tackle,” which was publicly presented at a gathering that had in attendance eminent Nigerians such as a former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola(SAN); human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN); and Prof. Pat Utomi.

Oyebola had, in the presentation, decried what he described as the insensitivity of the lawmakers, who he said, were living large in the midst of widespread poverty in the country.

He noted then that the earnings of the United States of America’s President were far lower than what a Nigerian lawmaker took home.

He had said, “It is also strange, unthinkable and very disheartening that a senator, not minding the grinding poverty of Nigerians, earns $1.7m a year, which is far higher than the $400,000 yearly income of the United States’ President, whose stupendous country is the richest in the world. Even a member of the House of Representatives also earns more than the American President. What a tragic and pathetic situation!

“Worse still, each of our National Assembly members earns more than the British Prime Minister, while the pay of a member of Ghana’s unicameral legislature is a very small fraction of our House of Representatives’ member jumbo pay of more than N10m in a month, let alone the monumental quarterly allowances that have led to serious public outcry.

“The multi-million naira earned by the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives even worse, more outrageous and mind-boggling.”

Oyebola noted that despite their modest pay, compared to the Nigerian federal lawmakers, the legislators in Ghana worked harder and “have minimal absenteeism,” while they had also done much to sustain their country’s democracy, “which is a model for many African countries.”

He said the Ghanaian lawmakers were also more sensitive to the realities in their country, recalling that an attempt by them to have a raise in earnings in 2009 was immediately jettisoned following a public outcry.

Oyebola called for a 90 per cent cut in the earnings of Nigerian elected public officials, saying with that they would still be richer than their counterparts in the US and the UK.

He said, “As suggested below, for the National Assembly, the President, ministers, state governors, state legislators, chairmen of local governments and councillors should have their pay and allowances reduced to 10 per cent of their present earnings. If effected, each senator’s present earnings of N15m a month will be reduced to N1.5m or N18m a year. A similar 90 per cent reduction should be effected from the pay of members of the House of Representatives.”

According to him, this is the only way to ensure that politics would no longer be a matter of do-or-die.

The World Solar Challenge began on Sunday with 42 solar cars crossing Australia’s tropical north to its southern shores, a grueling 3,000 km (1,864 mile) race through the outback.
The race from the northern city of Darwin to the southern city of Adelaide is expected to take a week for most cars, with speeds of 90-100 kmh (55-62 mph) powered only by the sun.
The fastest time was achieved by Japan’s Tokai University in 2009, completing the transcontinental race in only 29 hours and 49 minutes.
Belgian team Punch Powertrain started first on Sunday after recording a trial time of 2:03.8 for 2.97 km (1.78 miles), hitting an average speed of 83.4 kmh (51.5mph).
But reigning 2015 champions,  Nuon from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands,  believes it has a good chance of retaining the prize.
“All the cars look completely different (this year), and all we know is we’ve got a good car, we’ve got it running perfectly the last couple of days.
“We’re confident we’re going to do everything to win,” tour manager,  Sarah Benninkbolt,  said Sunday.
Race director Chris Selwood said the biennial event has attracted one of the best fields ever, with teams from more than 40 countries.
“This is the 30th anniversary of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge and competitors want to be part of that.
“They have been drawn to the challenge of new regulations which reduced the solar array size without limiting the size of the solar car,” Selwood said.
Teams come from countries including the United States, Japan, Germany, Chile, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Belgium, Sweden, Iran, South Korea, India, Hong Kong, South Africa, Poland, Thailand, Turkey, Canada, Taiwan and Australia.
The Northern Territory (NT)  Minister for Tourism and Culture, Lauren Mossn,  said her government’s A$250,000 (US 194,150 dollars) sponsorship of the race showed it was committed to achieving 50 per cent renewable energy for the territory by 2030.
“Innovation is at the heart of the event and the technology showcased this year will influence continuing solar innovation for vehicles and householders in the future,” she said.
“This event is a great promotion for the NT – it shows our ability to innovate to the world,  ”  she said.
