Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed
The recommendation was contained in a communique issued at the end of the Extraordinary Meeting of NCI on Hate Speeches, Fake News and National Unity, held on Friday in Jos, Plateau State.
The National Council on Information has recommended the “setting up of a Council to regulate the use of social media in Nigeria”.
The recommendation was contained in a communique issued at the end of the Extraordinary Meeting of NCI on Hate Speeches, Fake News and National Unity, held on Friday in Jos, Plateau State.
In the communique made available to newsmen on Sunday, the Council recommended the use of stringent measures in checking conventional media and their programmes.

The Council, presided over by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, noted that Social media has no address as such vetting and editing posting in social media might be difficult.
The Council recommended that Information managers at the state level should open a website to counter report of any misinformation posted by the social media as quickly as the hate speeches, misinformation and fake news are posted.

It recommended the immediate killing of whatever postings on social media assumed or presumed to be hate speeches or fake news or misinformation by the information managers in various states.
The Council noted that social media might take over the 2019 elections because Nigerians had come to rely more and believe the social media over the conventional media.

It directed the Federal and State Ministries of Information to use jingles to promote peace and come up with cartoons on the TV and Newspapers telling the dangers of fake news and hate speeches.
“The collaboration must start with National Orientation Agency and the state governments,” the Council recommended.

The Council underscored the need to start talking to those responsible for law and enforcement of justice to address the issues of citizens taking laws into their hands.
The body also emphasised that “the welfare of the people is paramount, people well fed will listen to their government”.

The extraordinary meeting of the council was declared open by Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden.
Lalong observed that the combination of hate speech, conducts, commentaries, writing and displays that combined with the engagement of Hate Media Platforms had in global history proven their ability to incite genocide.

He emphasised that any person or group of persons using any media outlet to bait and explore the innocence and gullibility of a few people must be condemned and sanctioned as criminal, by all people of conscience
Mohammed, in a keynote address, expressed displeasure over the hate spewed on radio stations across the country, which, according to him, has become alarming.

The Minister said that the careless incitement to violence and the level of insensitivity to the multi-religious, multi-ethnic nature of the country must not be allowed to continue because it is detrimental to the unity and well-being of our country.

The NCI is the highest policy making body for information articulation and delivery in the country.
Delegates to the Council included Heads of Parastatal Agencies in the Federal Ministry of Information and Commissioners for Information in the 36 States.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Yusuf
The police in Kano State have provided details of the gun battle with Boko Haram suspects in the state.
PREMIUM TIMES reported the duel which occured in the early hours of Sunday.
A special police task force set up by the Inspector General of Police led the battle that led to the arrest.
The Kano State Police Commissioner, Rabiu Yusuf, told journalists that the battle occurred at about 2 a.m. on Sunday at Gaya in Ungogo Local Government Area.
Mr. Yusuf said the police have been gathering intelligence on the suspects for a while. He said they were among Boko Haram members who escaped from Sambisa forest in Borno when the military took over most part of that large swath of land which used to be the base of the terror group.

The commissioner noted two members of the terror group had been arrested earlier. It was those two that took the police to Gaya, where the gun battle took place.
He said the gunmen were led by a dismissed military officer who was training the others. He said the suspect threw an improvised explosive device, IED, at the police and started to shoot before the police fought back.
The leader, however, escaped at the heat of the battle, he said.

“The police came under attack by the terrorists group at their location but were overpowered by the tactical task force. Three police officers sustained injuries and three of the Boko Haram gunned down.”
One of the three police officers injured during the battle has been discharged from the hospital after treatment.

The three shot Boko Haram suspects have been confirmed dead.
The dead suspects were identified as Abba Muhammad of Niger Republic, 20; Usman Buhari from Borno, 22; and Illiyasu Abdullahi from Kano, 46.
Two women suspected to be the wives of the deceased were arrested and identified as Gezawa Yau and Ladidi Yunusa.

Items recovered, according to the police commissioner included an AK47 rifle, 49 rounds of ammunition, IEDs, two sets of Air Force uniforms, one military boot, one laptop, one iPad, and some pictures of the suspects wearing military uniform.

President Buhari with the APC leaders in the British capital
President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday met with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some governors elected on the party’s platform.
A statement by the presidency, which provided a photograph of the event, gave the names of those who met with the president to include Governors Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and the APC National Chairman, John Oyegun.

Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, later quoted Governor Okorocha as describing Mr. Buhari as cheerful and humorous during the meeting held at Nigeria House in London.
Mr. Adesina said in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES, “In a telephone conversation following the meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and leaders with President Muhammadu Buhari in London Sunday, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, said the President was very cheerful and has not lost any bit of his sense of humour.

“The governor said the party delegation spent more than an hour with President Buhari over lunch, and it was very clear from the discussions that he followed developments at home very closely.
“He said the President was delighted to receive the delegation and asked each governor about affairs in his state. He also asked the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, about the state of the railways.

“When asked to react to all the negative things being said about him, the President just laughed, describing such negative reports as lies. Governor Okorocha said President Buhari was completely unperturbed by the cocktail of lies. He, instead, sent his best wishes to Nigerians.
“According to the governor, Nigerians don’t have to worry at all, adding that President Buhari will be back as soon as the doctors give him the green light.”

Mr. Adesina also quoted the Imo governor as saying, “By our visit to London today, the merchants of lies have been put out of business and Nigerians will not buy the garbage they have been selling.
“All those who look up to fake news can find better use for their time.”

Mr. Buhari, whose real medical condition is unknown, is in London for medical treatment.
His deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, recently visited him in the British capital, reporting back to Nigerians that the nation’s number one man was recuperating fast and would return soon.

FILE PHOTO: FRSC officials at a scene of an accident
No fewer than 14 persons have been reported dead in a fatal tanker and bus collision in Ile-Ife, Osun State on Sunday.
Witnesses say the dead, who were consumed in the inferno, include women and children.
The accident was said to have occurred at about 12 noon in front of a fuel station, few metres away from the popular Mayfair roundabout.

An 18-seater commercial bus heading from Ondo State to Ibadan collided with a diesel-filled tanker that was negotiating a U-turn on the way, witnesses said.
It was learnt that on collision, the bus burst into flames, burning most of the passengers beyond recognition.

Witnesses told journalists that the extent of damage resulted from the delayed arrival of rescue teams to the accident spot.
The bus was also carrying heavy metal objects which further propelled the bus and caused serious injuries to the passengers upon the collision before the bus caught fire.
Only two passengers were said to have been rescued and taken alive to a nearby private hospital.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Osun State, Anthony Oko, confirmed the incident.
“No fewer than 14 persons were burnt to death,” he said.
The driver of the tanker was nowhere to be found, as he exited the truck and left as soon as the accident occurred.
