The Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Ore has sentenced a traditional ruler in the Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, Oba Pius Akinfesola Adewola, to two years imprisonment.

The monarch was arraigned for 36 counts bordering on fraud, theft, illegal conversion of the monthly salaries of his domestic workers and chiefs, false declaration and impersonation.

In 2012, residents of the community in a peaceful protest banished him over an alleged misrule which they claimed brought the community into disrepute.

Similarly, the monarch was also accused of shortchanging traditional chiefs in the community by refusing to pay them their entitlement in full after he had collected same from the local government.

The community also accused him of engaging in a clash with his chiefs, as well as an illegal conversion of the community resources for personal use and writing of fictitious petitions against his subjects.

Shortly after his suspension by the Ondo State Government from parading himself as the Akamuja of Igburowo land, he was arrested and detained by the police at the Ondo State Police Command in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, over the allegations.

He was subsequently arraigned in court on the 36 counts.

Delivering the judgement, the presiding Magistrate, O.J Adelegan, ruled the plaintiff had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the monarch committed the offences.

The court held that Oba Adewola should be jailed for two years or pay a fine of N500,000 on each of the charges.

Magistrate O.J Adelegan, said “from the antecedents so far garnered on the record, the convict appears to me, a conscienceless person, who has no iota of regret, indulging in such an opprobrious and despicable act”.

“However, since it is no gainsaying, that our law is no respecter of any personality, I strongly deprecate the ungainly and unbecoming acquisitive conduct of the convict, particularly, his fraudulent instinct to corruptly enrich himself at the expense of others. Though, I have listened attentively to the plea of alocutus by his counsel, but from the available record, I see him as a neophyte, I mean a first offenders.

“Nevertheless, I am strongly of the humble mindset, that if the convict is not appropriately sanctioned, the danger inherent therein, is that people of like minds, may either overtly be influenced or encouraged to see criminality, as a veritable means of livelihood. To this end the convict is hereby sentenced as follows.

“On counts 10-21 of the charge, which are on fraudulent conversion, the convict is hereby sentenced to two years imprisonment or to pay a fine of 500,000.00 on each of the counts,” he stated.

In reaction, counsel to the monarch, Mr Bode Akinkoye, described the verdict as fair with the option of fine granted by the court.

Also, counsel to the Ondo State Government from the Ministry of Justice, Mrs Bola Joel-Ogundadegbe, commended the court for its thoroughness in the judgement.

The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) of the Nigerian Navy Calabar, on Friday said it had destroyed illegal refineries within its area of responsibility.
Rear Adm. Victor Adedipe, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), ENC, disclosed this to newsmen while decorating two senior officers.
Adedipe decorated Capt. Mary Adetola, the fourth female officer in the Nigerian Navy to become a Commodore in the Nursing unit alongside Lt.-Commander Mohammad Zakariya, who was also promoted to Commander.
However, the FOC said that 2017 had been a successful year for the command.
“We have done quite a lot in 2017, whenever this illegal refineries spring up and we discover them; we shut them down on a daily basis.
“We have equally arrested quite a number of criminals at sea who were terrorising ships and other vessels that were traversing our maritime environment.
“We have some challenges; we still have inadequate platforms and logistic challenges. But, within the constraint of what is provided, we will continue to function very well,’’ he said.
The FOC congratulated the newly decorated senior officers and urged them to see their promotion as a call to higher service.
Responding, Commodore Omotola, a matron in the Navy Hospital, Calabar, thanked God for her elevation.
She promised to work hard to justify the confidence on her, assuring that she would continue to discharge her constitutional duties effectively.
“I want to specially thank the almighty God who has made this day a success. My sincere appreciation also goes to the Chief of the Naval Staff and the FOC for finding us worthy of this gracious promotion’’, she said.

Labour unions in Osun State on Friday declared their intention to commence a total strike to press home their demand for payment of their full salaries.

The labour leaders have instructed their members to embark on indefinite strike immediately after the Christmas holiday.

According to them, the strike is expected to commence on Wednesday, December 27, 2017.

The decision came on the heels of the claim that the state government has refused to meet the demands of the workers, despite the 21-day ultimatum issued to the government by the unions.

Addressing a press conference in Osun, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Jacob Adekomi, directed the workers to proceed on an industrial action after the Christmas celebration.

Adekomi said the government has no reason to further pay modulated salaries to all categories of workers, just as the union would no longer accept the embargo placed on the promotion of workers since 2012.

He said the unions would ensure that the industrial action is effective after the Christmas break.

“With the 3rd Paris fund tranche, (FAAC) allocation and IGR including the local government allocation for October and November, it is evident that the state government can pay workers and pensioners alike their full salary and pensions, so why is this government refusing to do so?” he said.

“The workers will no longer accept this and that is why we are declaring this strike, so from the 27th, after the Christmas holidays, we expect our members to stay off work until government is ready to do the needful.” LR News

One person has been reported killed following an attack by suspected herdsmen in Bilachi, a community in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The attack was said to have occurred at about 7:00 pm on Thursday as the assailants reportedly set the village ablaze, leaving the people to scamper to safety.

Channels Television gathered that the person killed was the younger brother of the village chief while one other person sustained injury from a machete cut on his left hand and his back.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Othman Abubakar, has confirmed the incidence to our correspondent in Yola, the state capital.

Abubakar, however, said he is yet to get more updates on the attack.

The attack on Bilachi community comes less than three weeks after assailants suspected to be herdsmen went on a rampage and attacked Lawaru and Dong communities.

Two village heads were reported killed following the attacks which were said to have taken place early in the morning on December 4, in Demsa Local Government Area of the state.

The Chairman of neighbouring Numan Local government Area, who also confirmed the attack, said that the assailants set people’s homes ablaze.

However, a security expert and retired Amry Captain, Umar Aliyu, had stressed the need for proper engagements between government and the people.

Aliyu said during his appearance on Sunrise Daily earlier in December that the war against terror could only be won if the government engages the Nigerians using their respective indigenous languages.

“The National Orientation Agency (NOA) speaks English on their media jingles, you think the man in Biu speaks English, do you think he has light to watch television? The campaign against terrorism should be broken down into languages to that local village man,” he had said.

More than 220,000 women were sexually harassed on public transport in France over two years, the national crime statistics agency said in its first report on the subject, describing it as a “conservative estimate”.
The Harvey Weinstein scandal in the United States has accelerated a rethink of attitudes toward sexual harassment in France, a country that cherishes its self-image as the land of seduction and romance.
“Although the public mostly focuses on domestic violence, sexual violence committed on the street, on public transport or in other public places is just as serious, and merits more attention,” the report said.
France’s National Observatory of Crime and Criminal Justice (ONDRP) found that 267,000 people – 85 percent of whom were women – were sexually harassed on public transport between 2014 and 2015, including kissing, groping, flashing and rape.
It is the first time the ONDRP, which publishes an annual survey on insecurity, has focused on sexual harassment on public transport.
Paris was voted the third most woman-friendly city in a Thomson Reuters Foundation survey published in October, and ranked fourth least risky for sexual violence.
But harassment remains prevalent, many said on social media.
“I was spat at, called a whore … and one morning groped by two laughing men on a crowded metro,” Siobhán Dowling said on Twitter, describing her time in Paris as a student.
“The level of everyday harassment was shocking.”
Sexual harassment on public transport was worst for women in the Paris region, with reports of incidents seven times higher than in the rest of the country, the study found.
Most cases of sexual harassment occurred when a train or bus was moving so the victim could not flee, the study said.
“When you have closed spaces with hundreds of thousands of people and zero security agents or police, it’s no wonder that cowardly perpetrators act in total impunity,” Ikram Moustaoui said on Facebook.
French women have taken to social media to share tales of sexual harassment, outstripping the #MeToo campaign with a name-and-shame hashtag #BalanceTonPorc – or ‘expose your pig’.
French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled measures in November aimed at educating the public and schoolchildren about sexism and violence against women and improving police support for victims. He also proposed criminalising street harassment.
France’s gender equality ministry declined to comment.

The Nigerian Army on Thursday called on people in the north east to be security vigilant to guard against suicide bomb attack by Boko Haram insurgents during the yuletide.
Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Maiduguri.
Nwachukwu said that it was imperative for the people to be vigilant and monitor suspicious persons in their communities,  places of worship and other public places during the festive season.
He said that the insurgents were taking advantage of the relaxed vigilance and security measures in the society to attack soft targets.
“Additionally, an assessment of recent trend of Boko Haram insurgents Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) campaign indicated a deliberate targeting of places of worships as witnessed in the disheartening incident of the suicide bombings.
“One of the reasons adduced for easy infiltration by suicide bombers is the absence of measures to scrutinize and identify persons accessing these facilities.
“Most places of worship have been found to exhibit similar deficiency and have lowered their guards, thereby exposing themselves to preventable attacks”.
Nwachukwu noted that with the yuletide around the corner people should be more vigilant and devise security checks in their respective places of worship and social gatherings.
He called on community and religious leaders to sensitize and mobilize their people to be security conscious to prevent insurgents’ attack.
Nwachukwu disclosed the troops had sustained onslaught against the Boko Haram insurgents in the ongoing clearance operations at the fringes of northern Borno.
He added that several insurgents were killed, hundreds of the terrorists captured while many others voluntarily surrendered.
“Some of the insurgents, however, escaped with gunshot wounds and might be seeking help and treatment in any available health facility.
“Unsuspecting persons have inadvertently provided such fleeing insurgents with support without recourse to the security agencies,” Nwachukwu said.
The army spokesman called on communities to report such fleeing wounded insurgents to security agencies.
Nwachukwu added that the insurgency left several Unexploded Ordinances (UXO) and IEDs scattered within the theatre of operation, noting that the bombs were harmful to unsuspecting members of the public.
According to him, the EOD teams of the military and the Nigeria Police Force were conducting clearance operations to sanitize the war ravaged communities in the northeast.
Nwachukwu stressed that in view of the dangers posed by this development parents, children, farmers, herders, traders and artisans traversing the hinterland should be wary of strange objects and not to fiddle with them.
“Discovery of such objects should be reported to security agencies”. LR News
