Senator Ademola Adeleke, who recently won the governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, has been dragged to court by some aggrieved members of the party.

The members are seeking that the court grant an interim order to set aside results of the recently concluded election, claiming that Adeleke has no primary school leaving Certificate.

The plaintiffs also asked the court to grant an order restraining the PDP from presenting Adeleke’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the September 22nd governorship poll.

When the case came up for mention on Wednesday, July 25, the counsel for the applicants, Mathew Ayandokun, prayed the court for an interim order setting aside the election of Adeleke. He also asked the court to stop the INEC from accepting his nomination as the party’s flag bearer.

Ayandokun after the court hearing told journalists that his client is challenging Adeleke in court because he does not possess and has not produced his school leaving certificate.

Adeleke’s lawyer, Edmond Biri-Omoni, however, debunked these claims.

Biri-Omoni, while addressing journalists insisted that his client has a certificate. He added that it will be proper for him and his client to be put on notice and served with the necessary papers before coming to court.

Justice David Oladimeji adjourned ruling on the application till Thursday, July 26.
Adeleke, a lawmaker representing Osun West district in the National Assembly during the primary held on Saturday, July 21 polled a total of 1,569 votes to beat his closest rival Dr Akin Ogunbiyi who scored 1,562 votes.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has said that with a total of six satellites launches, Nigeria is a major player in space technology, listed among owners of man-made objects orbiting the earth.
Engr Aishatu Umar, the NSE Giri branch chairman, disclosed this in her remark at a public lecture tagged “The Impact of Space Engineering on Industralisation’’ held on Wednesday  in Abuja.
Umar said that Nigeria achieved such feat through national commitment and focus on development of technology and human capital to meet `our needs, as a nation, in the space sphere.’
She said that one of the satellites orbiting the earth today was solely designed by Nigerian scientists and engineers.
The Chairman said the achievement was as a result of the collaboration between National Space Research and Development Agency, Federal University of Technology, Akure and Japanese University.

It gave the participants the opportunity to look at space resources, share experiences and chart a way into the future.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) believes Nigerians now know better and will reject the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the general elections in 2019.

A member of the APC Board of Trustees (BoT), Mr Ismael Ahmed, said this during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday in Abuja.

“Ultimately, I think Nigerians are wiser … what we are interested in is the survival of this platform; Nigerians have rejected PDP over and over again and they will reject it in 2019, God’s willing,” he said.

Mr Ahmed’s statement comes one day after dozens of the members of the National Assembly defected from the APC, a move the PDP described as the right step to rescue Nigeria’s democracy.

“We are going to mitigate the effect of this defection,” said the APC BoT member who added, “If we can stop it, we will and if there are others that we will keep talking to, to come back within the legislature, we will hopefully do that.”

He further condemned the insinuation that the lawmakers left because the APC leadership was unable to manage its internal conflicts and that some governors were planning to join the PDP.

Ahmed admitted that while the challenges in the party are just like that of every other big political party that has come into governance, the new leadership of the party would resolve them soon.

“Man management in its entirety is something that needs a certain level of craftsmanship which I think the new national chairman (Adams Oshiomhole) is bringing to the fore and he has been going about,” he said.

The APC BoT member, however, said “when people have made up their minds that this is what they want to do, there is nothing you can do. There is no governor that has moved officially yet or decamped yet.”

Fourteen senators and 37 members of the House of Representatives announced their defection from the ruling APC on Tuesday.

The senators are Dino Melaye (Kogi), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Suleiman Hunkuyi (Kaduna), Abdulazeez Nyako (Adamawa), Barnabas Gemade (Benue), and Ibrahim Dambaba (Sokoto), among others.

Some of the members of the lower House who also defected are Danburam Nuhu, Mark Gbilah, Razak Atunwa, Ahmed Bichi, Abdulsamad Dasuk, Zakari Mohammed, and Sani Rano.

A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced two tilers to three months’ imprisonment each for stealing wrappers worth N150,000.
The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, however, gave the convicts, Abdullahi Bala, 17, and Fahad Ibrahim, 20, an option of N5, 000 fine each.
Emmanuel warned them to desist from committing crimes, and ordered that the wrappers should be returned to the owner.
The convicts, both residents of Liberia Road, Malali, Kaduna, had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, break-in and stealing.
Following the guilty plea, the prosecutor, Sgt. Chris Leo, urged the court to try them summarily under Section 286 sub 2 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
Earlier, Leo told the court that the convicts committed the offences on July 18 at Ungwan Rimi Road, Kaduna.
He said that the convicts broke into a shop belonging to Mr Abdulmalik Rabiu and stole the wrappers.
“They ran to an unknown destination until they were seen and arrested on July 20 with the said wrappers,” he said.
The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened Sections 117, 174 and 347 of the Penal Code, Law of Kaduna State, 2017.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The governor made the announcement during a meeting with elected local government chairmen and councillors on Wednesday at the Government House Makurdi, hours after protesting youths barred him from traveling to Abuja to attend the APC reconciliation meeting.

The announcement brings to an end months of speculation that the governor will return to the PDP as a result of his disagreement with leaders of the APC in Benue and at the national level.

His defection follows major political decisions in the state over the last three weeks, all of which had fuelled the speculations of his exit.

The governor recently sacked over 80 percent of his cabinet members and, on Tuesday, the Benue House of Assembly impeached Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange as its Speaker.
