An aspirant for the Niger South senatorial ticket on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr Mohammed Santuraki has withdrawn from the race.
Santuraki, who is the Pro Chancellor of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, made this known in a statement on Friday in Minna.
He said that the decision was taken after circumstances on ground showed that the values he had dreamed of bringing into party politics in the country was not ripe.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the election in the zone was declared inconclusive and a rerun ordered in five out of the eight Local Government Areas where elections were held on Oct. 2.
”My candidacy for the Senatorial seat of Niger South is anchored on three values that drive purposeful leadership, namely; Capacity, Experience and Integrity. These are the kinds of values on which electoral contests are usually based in a democracy.
”Unfortunately, from our performance reportedly recorded in the results from only the 3 Local Government Areas where elections purportedly held, it would appear that the principles on which we campaigned were not sufficient in our kind of democracy,’’ he said.
Santuraki said that he has submitted his letter of withdrawal to the office of Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger as well as notified his supporters across the area councils.
He added that he remained a loyal party member and would work with any aspirant that emerged the winner after the rerun.
‘’I shall remain a member of the party, and look forward to working with whoever the Party bestows as the eventual winner of the Senatorial primary elections and other stakeholders towards ensuring success for our Party at the General Elections.’’
Santuraki is a former Managing Director of Bank of Agriculture, and before then, Managing Director of FBN Mortgages Limited.
He is a seasoned banker with about 30 years of diversified experience in Nigeria’s financial services sector ranging from agricultural development finance through investment commercial banking to mortgage banking.

“This was a peaceful protest. How can I be treated like this in a country I have fought for and invested in?

“This is madness, I came with words they answered with bullets!” Senator Ben Murray Bruce tweeted.

Leaders of the opposition party among whom are the Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and the National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, led the protesters to INEC office after they had earlier converged at the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja.

Two men, who allegedly reconnected electricity after being disconnected by Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), were on Friday arraigned in a Lugbe Magistrates’ Court, Abuja.
The men, Daniel Ibu, 51, and Abraham Nwachukwu, 38, residents of Zone 1, Lugbe, Abuja, are facing a two-count charge of joint act and theft.
The prosecutor, Ndidi Ukoha, alleged that the defendants committed the offences on Aug. 24 at about 11:50 p.m.
The prosecutor told the court that one Augustine Ubani, a staff of AEDC, Apo Regional Office, on the same date, reported the matter at the Lugbe Police Station.
According to Ukoha, the complainant said that on the same date, while on patrol to monitor the company’s network, he discovered that the defendants who had earlier been disconnected over failure to pay their bills, illegally reconnected electricity into their houses.
The prosecutor further alleged that on inspection, it was discovered that the defendants had been consuming electricity in their houses without paying for it, nor did they offset their previous debt of N142,500.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, while the Magistrate, Samuel Idhiarhi, granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000 each, with a surety each in like sum.
The case was adjourned until Nov. 15, for hearing.

Protest in plateau over killings as NUT embarks on prayers on Teachers’ Day

The Plateau Chapter of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) on Friday held a special prayer session for intercession to end killings in the state.
Speaking at the event to mark the 2018 World Teachers’ Day on Friday in Jos, Mr Ayuba Gana, the NUT Chairman in Plateau said the state was marking the day solemnly because of the spate of killings.
Gana said the prayer was to seek God’s intervention in the security challenges in the state which had destroyed lives and property and threatened access to quality education for children.
“We are praying against the killings because it threatens the future of our children.
“They cannot go to school in this situation; this is a concern to us and should be to every member of the society
“ We have lost many teachers and school children in these killings; we do not want our situation to be like that of Borno where many schools have been abandoned because of security challenges.
“The prayer session is also to seek for wisdom and grace for teachers to discharge their duties diligently irrespective of the challenges they are facing,’’ he said.
He said the prayer was further geared towards seeking improvement in their welfare alleging that they were last promoted in 2016 even though many teachers were currently due for promotion.
“ Many teachers are stagnated in their current positions, our annual increment has been irregular and many retired teachers are yet to receive their entitlements and are suffering ill health.
“We are still receiving half salary since the approval of the N18, 000 minimum wage and in many rural schools, there are inadequate teachers “ he said.
Gana said the theme for the 2018 celebration, "the Right to Education means the Right to a Qualified Teacher" was apt as it showed the importance of teachers in improving access to quality education.
One of the teachers, Mr Bashir Isah stressed the need for sponsors of attacks in the state to be exposed just as the people must endeavour to live in peace.
Mrs Martha Ibrahim on her part, prayed for improved welfare for teachers and better enabling environment for teaching and learning.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that over 100 primary school teachers across the 17 local government areas in Plateau converged on the NUT secretariat for the special prayer session.
NAN also reports that World Teachers Day is marked annually on Oct. 5 to highlight the contributions of teachers to ensure a better society while seeking better welfare for them.

No fewer that 320 people were injured when a packed train travelling from Johannesburg to the capital Pretoria crashed into the back of a stationary train, Metrorail authorities said on Friday.
The collision, which occurred at 5:50 p.m. (1530 GMT) on Thursday during peak rush hour travel, left 32 passengers with serious but not critical injuries, Reuters reports.
“The injured commuters were taken for medical attention at various hospitals,” Metrorail said in a statement.
“A board of enquiry will be instituted soon to determine the root cause of the accident.”
In January, a similar train accident on the outskirts of Johannesburg injured 200 people.
South Africa has the continent’s largest railway network, but it has been plagued by mismanagement and under-investment that has seen train use dwindle despite it being the cheapest form of public transportation.
In a report, the government’s Rail Safety Regulator said that, in the 2016/17 financial year, 495 people lost their lives on the country’s railways and 2,079 were injured.
The death toll was up 5 per cent from the previous year. Reuters/LR News

Mobile courts are now to summarily try those bastardising the national currency, the naira, the Bankers Committee said on Thursday.
The committee said those who “spray” naira notes at parties risk going to jail for six months or earning a fine of N50,000 after trial by mobile courts that would be deployed nationwide.
Cantral Bank of Nigeria (CBN) spokesman Isaac Okorafor said the police and the Ministry of Justice would be involved in the operation, adding:
“If a celebrant is dancing and you spray him/her, you may go to jail from the party venue because the law enforcement agents will be there, waiting to arrest you.
“It is the duty of law enforcement agencies to catch offenders and take them to court. Our collaboration with the police will intensify as we move to implement the mobile court for offenders.”
Admonishing Nigerians on how to use cash as gift, Okorafor said: “If you want to give, put the money in an envelop, and give it the celebrant. Let’s know that anybody hawking and writing on the naira will face six months in jail or N50,000 or both.”
Managing Director of First Securities Discount House (FSDH) Merchant Bank Mrs. Handa Ambah said people selling naira notes would be punished.
She said: “We need to let them know that this is money. The fact that you cannot spray money at parties does not mean that you cannot put money in an envelope and pass it to the celebrants.”
