Beyonce

Singer Beyonce on Monday said she was offering $100,000 in scholarship money to students at four historically African-American  colleges and universities in the United States.
The donation came on the back of her acclaimed two-hour performance at the Coachella music festival,
The Homecoming Scholars Award Program for the 2018-19 academic year will give away $25,000 in scholarship money to a student respectively at Xavier University of Louisiana, Wilberforce University in Ohio, Tuskegee University in Alabama and Bethune-Cookman University in Florida, the “Lemonade” album singer’s foundation said.
Beyonce’s performance at the Coachella festival in the Southern California desert on Saturday was billed as a homage to education and black American culture, featuring a marching band, performance art, choir and dance. She was supported by more than 150 performers on stage.
It was the first time a black woman headlined the two-weekend festival, one of the biggest U.S. music gatherings of the year.
“We honour all institutions of higher learning for maintaining culture and creating environments for optimal learning which expands dreams and the seas of possibilities for students,” Ivy McGregor, who administers the singer’s BeyGood foundation, said in a statement announcing the scholarship.
The more than 100 historically black U.S. colleges and universities were all established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when white-dominated institutions of higher education could bar African American students.
Last year, the 36-year-old singer established a merit scholarship program to support young women.
The “Formation” singer’s Coachella performance, which was streamed live on YouTube, was hailed as an “unprecedented celebration of black cultural influence in America” by NBC News.
Trade publication Variety called Beyonce’s show, her first in more than a year, a “musical, visual and physical triumph.”
Beyonce will perform again at Coachella this Saturday and she and her husband, rapper Jay Z, are set to begin a U.S. and European tour together in June.

Mr. Michael Cremza

The Kano State police command said some unidentified gunmen on Monday in Kano killed a police escort and abducted a German engineer, identified as Mr. Michael Cremza.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Magaji Majiya, confirmed the incident in a statement in Kano.
He said the gunmen trailed Cremza’s car to Sabon Titi Madobi Road Kano, where they launched the attack. Cremza works for construction company, Dantata and Sawoe.
The police spokesman said operatives of the command had already swung into action by cordoning off the area at the time the incident happened.
He assured that the operatives would track down the culprits involved in the dastardly act.
However, a witness account said the gunmen who were five, were inside another motor vehicle when they opened fire on the vehicle conveying staff of Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company.
“The incident happened around 8:45am when people in the area were going out for work.
“The attackers killed one police Sgt attached to Special Protection Unit (SPU) on escort duty and abducted a German National, Mr Cremza working with the company”
“They shot the Police at Sabon Titi, a scarcely populated area in Kano, killing the Police and abducted the German, “the eyewitness who pleaded for an anonymity said.
A resident who witnessed the incident said he saw the abductors bundling the German into their car, while shooting in the air.
“They shot the policeman and fired shots into the sky. We began to run away,” he said. LR News

While politicians are preoccupied with the forthcoming general elections, President Muhammadu Buhari told British Prime Minister, Theresa May, that he is more concerned about the security of the people and the growth of the Nigerian economy.

The President said this on Monday when he held a bilateral meeting with the British Prime Minister at 10, Downing Street, London.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, the three-pronged focus of President Buhari’s administration resonated through the conversation.

“We campaigned on three major issues, to secure the country, revive the economy and fight corruption,” said the President.
“We have elections next year, politicians are already preoccupied with the polls, but I am bothered more about security and the economy,” he stressed.

President Buhari further recalled that Nigeria and Britain have a long history of cooperation on several fronts.
According to him, people ought to know how they arrived where they are if they would move forward.

The President acknowledged that it was a mistake for Nigeria to have stopped the teaching of history as a subject in schools and promised that the Federal Government would return it to the curriculum.

Highlighting the importance of education, he revealed that his administration was making more investment to improve the sector.

“People can look after themselves if well educated. In this age of technology, education is very important. We need well-staffed and well-equipped institutions to move into the next generation,” President Buhari said.

In her remarks, Prime Minister May said Britain would continue to work with Nigeria in training and equipping the military.

She was particular about the abduction of the schoolgirls by Boko Haram terrorists, noting that her country would continue to give Nigeria the needed assistance.

The Prime Minister, however, commended President Buhari’s administration for “making good progress on the economy,” and urged it to maintain the focus despite approaching elections and the increase in political activities.

She also noted: “Good grounding in education is good. It is important to equip young people for today’s world. It is also a good bastion and defence against modern slavery.”

May, who observed that President Buhari has been doing much to improve trade and business for Nigeria, said it was also time to boost intra-commonwealth trade.

In Ghana, mosques and churches are seen to be compounding the problem of  noise pollution, according to a report by Deutsche Welle.
In the capital Accra, authorities are seeking to deal with the noise caused by these places of worship — and mosques in particular.
Mosques are being asked to use mobile text or WhatsApp messages to call the Muslim community to prayer.
“Why is it that time for prayer cannot be transmitted with text message or WhatsApp? So the imam would send WhatsApp messages to everybody,” said environment minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.
“I think that will help to reduce the noise. This may be controversial but it’s something that we can think about,” he told DW.
The government says it is hopeful such a change could contribute to a reduction in excessive noise.
For many Muslims living in the capital, the idea of a mobile call to prayer is more difficult to embrace.
Fadama community mosque imam, Sheik Usan Ahmed, calls Muslims to prayer five times at prescribed times throughout the day. Although he agrees that the level of noise could be reduced, relying on text and WhatsApp messages could also have economic implications, he told DW.
“The imam is not paid monthly. Where would he get the money to be doing that? We try to practice what is possible. So the text message or any other message is not a problem. But I don’t think it is necessary,” Ahmed said.
Other Muslim residents who spoke to DW also rejected the suggestion. “I don’t find anything wrong with Muslims waking up at dawn and using the megaphone to call their people to come worship their god because we have Christian churches who use megaphones as well and they also preach at dawn,” said Nora Nsiah.
Another Accra resident, Kevin Pratt, also dismissed Frimpong-Boateng’s suggestion: “Not everyone is on social media, and not everyone is as literate as he is.” The Muslim call to prayer is traditionally supposed to reach as far as possible, Habiba Ali added.
The government has signalled  it ultimately intends to enforce laws in order to quiet things down in Ghana.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has long warned of the harmful impact exposure to environmental noise may have on public health.
It lists cardiovascular disease, sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment among some of the short and long-term problems people could develop. LR News

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday received the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu in London, United Kingdom.

This was before the President received a support group called Buhari Diaspora Support Organisation also in London on Sunday.

The President is currently on an official visit to London.

He earlier met the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, last week Wednesday, whom he explained to why he was seeking re-election.

Responding to question by the Archbishop of Canterbury on the clashes between herdsmen and farmers in different parts of Nigeria, President Buhari lamented that the crisis has long existed.

“The problem is even older than us. It has always been there but now made worse by the influx of armed gunmen from the Sahel region into different parts of the West African sub-region.

“These gunmen were trained and armed by Muammar Gadaffi of Libya. When he was killed, the gunmen escaped with their arms. We encountered some of them fighting with Boko Haram.

“Herdsmen that we used to know carried only sticks and maybe a cutlass to clear the way, but these ones now carry sophisticated weapons. The problem is not religious, but sociological and economic. But we are working on solutions,” Buhari said.

The President left the country on Monday, April 9 for London to hold discussions on Nigeria – British relations with Prime Minister Theresa May prior to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings scheduled for 18th to 20th April, 2018.
