The Nigeria Police Force said it arrested over 1,000 armed robbery, kidnapping and cattle rustling suspects within one year of the creation of the Operation Absolute Sanity on the Kaduna/Abuja highways.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Force, on July 25, 2017, commenced the operation on the highways.

The team includes Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, Force Intelligence Branch and Police Helicopters.

The operation was to complement and augment the on-going Joint Police/Military operations on ground before now.

The force Spokesman, acting DCP Jimoh Moshood, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the arrest of 32 suspects in connection with armed robbery, kidnapping and cattle rustling on Monday in Tafa, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Moshood said that the arrest cut across Kogi, Kaduna, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara and FCT, among others.

He said that the force would not relent in its efforts to reduce crimes to the barest minimum in the country, adding that the operation would be sustained and extended to other parts of the country.

Moshood said that the 32 suspects specialised in attacking travelers on the Kaduna/Abuja highway.

He said that items recovered from the suspects included 22 Ak 47 rifles, one Toyota Corolla car, and 127 AK 47 ammunition.

The spokesman said the suspects, who confessed to the various roles they played in the crimes, would be charged to court on completion of investigation.

Moshood said that contrary to insinuation by members of the public, the police did not release suspects after presenting them to the media.

He said: “The police do not release suspects after parading them as alleged by members of the public.”

He said that the police would always ensure that suspects arrested were prosecuted according to the laws of the land.

Moshood, who said that several convictions had been secured, added that the police and the judiciary must work together to achieve results.

He urged appropriate authority to dispense cases to avoid the recycling of suspects by the police. LR News

Senator Godswill Akpabio

Senator Godswill Akpabio says the recent defections in the All Progressives Congress (APC) was an attempt to frustrate the efforts of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The lawmaker took a swipe at those who defected from the party during an interview on Channels Television’s Roadmap 2019.

“For me, I saw a situation where the ruling party was not only being distracted but the movements were capable of bringing down the government,” he said on the special political programme which aired on Monday.

“We need to have Nigeria before we can have the election. These things are as a result of continuous conspiracies against government and all sorts of things.”

Several top members of the APC, including Senate President Bukola Saraki and the governors Benue, Kwara, and Sokoto defected from the party recently.

All of them accused the APC of failing to keep its promises to the nation and attributed their defection to national interest.

But Akpabio faulted their motives, insisting they had nothing to do with national interest.

The former Senate Minority leader who had recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC recently himself, however, attributed his own decision to the national interest.

He said, “I don’t think that the movements that we saw from the APC to my then party were prompted by national interest, I think most of those things were based on the personal interest of individuals.”

“I just assessed the situation and I said I needed to contribute my quota towards stabilising the situation; towards ensuring that people realise that it wasn’t all about a conspiracy to bring down a government but to conspire to resolve the security situation.”

Ahead of the 2019 elections, Senator Akpabio urged leaders in the country to shift their attention from political interest and work for the good of the people.

He also advised the critics of President Buhari’s administration to support the government to tackle insecurity and other challenges of the nation rather than coming together to take over power at the centre.

Akpabio said, “We need to have Nigeria before we can have an election. We should conspire to provide employment opportunities.”

“We should conspire to stabilise the government, to ensure that we leave a better future for our children. We should conspire to bring food to the table of Nigerians; not to conspire to just take government for the sake of taking government.” LR News

The Chinese President, Xi Jinping has told Africa that funds are not for “vanity projects” but rather to build and finance infrastructure.

He called on the Chinese firms to respect local people and their environment.

Xi said at a business forum on Monday before the start of a triennial China Africa summit their friendship was time-honoured and that China’s investment in Africa came with no political strings attached.

“China does not interfere in Africa’s internal affairs and does not impose its own will on Africa. What we value is the sharing of development experience and the support we can offer to Africa’s national rejuvenation and prosperity,” Xi said.

“China’s cooperation with Africa is clearly targeted at the major bottlenecks to development. Resources for our cooperation are not to be spent on any vanity projects but in places where they count the most,” he said.

China has denied engaging in “debt trap” diplomacy but Xi is likely to use the gathering of African leaders to offer a new round of financing, following a pledge of $60 billion at the previous summit in South Africa three years ago.

Chinese officials have vowed to be more cautious to ensure projects are sustainable. China defends continued lending to Africa on the grounds that the continent still needs debt-funded infrastructure development.

Beijing has also fended off criticism it is only interested in resource extraction to feed its own booming economy, that the projects it funds have poor environmental safeguards, and that too many of the workers for them are flown in from China rather than using African labour.

Xi told business leaders Chinese firms in Africa had to be aware of their social responsibilities and make sure their investments served the community and improved their wellbeing.

“I hope that our entrepreneurs will act to fulfil social responsibilities and respect local culture and tradition,” he said.

“I also hope you will do more in staff training and bettering lives for the local people and will put more emphasis on the environment and resources," Xi said.

A crocodile attacked and ate a woman and her 5-month-old baby, who had gone to fetch water from a lake in north-western Uganda, officials said on Monday.
The attack on the shores of Lake Albert on Friday is yet another example of human-animal conflict in Africa.
This is a situation where species often have to fight over natural resources – land and water – and many rural families don’t have access to running water at home.
“We are advising people to avoid areas where these man-eater crocodiles are,” Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Spokesman, Bashir Hangi, said.
“Crocodiles stay in fish-breeding areas, but when the fish get depleted, they come on the surface and attack and eat humans,” Hangi said.
Local newspaper The Daily Monitor said other villagers on the lake shore had tried and failed to save the woman and her baby.
“Residents tried to save her but their efforts were fruitless as the crocodile had already disappeared with her body in the waters,” the paper reported.
A 700-kilogramme crocodile which had killed and eaten five people over the past five years was captured on Saturday on the eastern shores of Lake Victoria, another UWA official, Peter Ogwang, said.
“The attacks by these animals are now increasing. Right now I am in Ngoma [central Uganda] tracking down a crocodile which has eaten 32 goats in the village,” he said.

Several persons were feared killed and others injured in a clash between students of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, and some indigenes of the town.

The incident occurred after a disagreement between some of the students and a commercial driver on Saturday.

The driver was alleged to have shortchanged the students and reneged on an earlier agreement to drop them off at a location.

The students were said to have regrouped on Sunday and with the support of some of their colleagues and stormed the park. This resulted in a fight between the students and residents of the community.

The Institution’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Husseini Enagi confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Monday.

Although he said that the claims about the loss of lives could not be substantiated, he confirmed that several students were injured, and properties destroyed in the clash.

Some of the students, however, told Channels Television that at least five of their colleagues were killed in the clash.

Husseini said the institution’s management will meet to deliberate on the matter and to also ascertain more facts concerning the incident.
