The lawmaker representing Kogi West senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, is said to have been re-arrested by the police after he was arraigned.

Senator Melaye was arraigned earlier by the police at a magistrate court in Wuse Zone II district of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The lawmaker was said to have been granted bail in the sum of N90million by the court, having met the bail condition.

However, Senator Melaye’s lawyer confirmed to Channels Television in a telephone interview on Wednesday that the lawmaker was rearrested by the police shortly after his release.

On the offences for which lawmaker was arraigned, he was accused of deliberately breaking the side windscreen of a bus conveying him to Lokoja, Kogi State where he was to be arraigned in court for alleged conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.

According to the charge, the police van conveying the senator was intercepted by a vehicle allegedly occupied by his brother, a lawyer, and another yet to be identified person who reportedly escaped from the scene after the blockade.

Senator Melaye was accused of making an attempt to commit suicide by jumping out of the vehicle conveying him and falling on the ground, with a threat to implicate the police for his supposed death.

He was also said to have resisted a further attempt by the police to re-arrest him with the help of some persons who allegedly threatened to injure the police officers if they tried to arrest him.
The lawmaker was said to have escaped from the scene in another vehicle, thereby committing an offence punishable under sections 148, 153, 172, 173, 231, and 326 under the Penal Code Act.

But Senate President Bukola Saraki condemned the action of the Police IG describing it as a threat to democracy.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Tukur Buratai, has warned officers and men of the Nigerian Army not to resort to social media to air their grievances or discuss operational strategies.
Buratai said  such acts could be injurious to national security.
He gave the warning on Tuesday when he declared open an Officers Office Management and Documents Security Workshop at the Command Officers Mess, Abuja.
Buratai, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Maj.- Gen. Rasheed Yusuf, warned that resorting to the social media was highly prohibited by the military.
He said that the army had well established channels to address complaints.
He said that the workshop was meant to equip officers on the importance of securing service documents in a manner that would not jeopardise any operations and administration.
The army chief said that to check the excesses of some officers, a directorate had already been initiated to focus solely on the management of the social media in the service.
” The social media has brought out additional challenges to information security which are being used by misguided personnel contrary to our service rules.
“The Nigerian Army has an extant policy on the use of social media which prohibits among others, the use of social media to discuss or disclose service matters.
“It is indeed unfortunate and unprofessional for service personnel to resort to social media to disclose classified information or express grievances when the Army has well established channels for addressing complaints.
“The ultimate objective of the forum is to build your capacity to effectively support my vision which is to have a professional responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional role,” he said.
Buratai called on the officers to take the workshop seriously, adding that some service documents were highly classified to the extent that their disclosure could be injurious to national security.
He said, hence, officers needed to be updated on how to preserve the sanctity of service documents and the threats in these areas.
The Chief of Administration of the Nigerian Army, Maj.- Gen. Idris Alkali, said that it was unprofessional for any officer or soldier to disclose any official information without authorisation.
He noted that security of documents is one of the cardinal requirements for effective operations and administration in the military,” especially as the Nigerian Army is involved in numerous operations both within the country and globally”.
Alkali said that the workshop was meant for officers involved in the generating, drafting and releasing of documents that could jeopardise document security.
” It is against this background that the workshop is being organised to improve the professional competence of Nigerian Army officers in maintaining the sanctity of service documents,” Alkali said. LR News

Researchers at the University of Michigan (UM) are developing a pill that makes
tumors light up when exposed to infrared light, and the concept has worked in mice.
“It’s actually based on a failed drug,” said Greg Thurber, UM assistant professor of chemical engineering and
biomedical engineering, in a news release posted on UM website.
“It binds to the target, but it doesn’t do anything, which makes it perfect for imaging.”
The researchers attached a molecule that fluoresces when it is struck with infrared light to this drug.
Then, they gave the drug to mice that had breast cancer, and they saw the tumors light up.
The targeting molecule has already been shown to make it through the stomach unscathed, and the liver also gives it a pass, so it can travel through the bloodstream.
The move could also catch cancers that would have gone undetected.
By providing specific information on the types of molecules on the surface of the tumor cells, physicians can better distinguish a malignant cancer from a benign tumour.
Moreover, using a dye delivered orally rather than directly into a vein also improves the safety of screening.
Tens of millions of women are screened every year in the U. S. alone.
According to a study out of Denmark last year, about a third of breast cancer patients treated with surgery or chemotherapy have tumours that are benign or so slow-growing that they would never have become
life-threatening.
The research has been published in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday the world’s largest social network will soon include a new dating feature — while vowing to make privacy protection its top priority in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Zuckerberg unveiled the plans as he addressed Facebook’s annual developers conference in San Jose, California — emphasizing that the focus would be on helping people find long-term partners.
“This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships, not just hook-ups,” Zuckerberg said in presenting the new feature, noting that one in three marriages in the United States start online — and that some 200 million Facebook users identify as being single.
Under the new feature, users will be able to create a separate “dating” profile not visible to their network of friends, with potential matches recommended based on dating preferences, points in common, and mutual acquaintances.
Zuckerberg did not specify whether the feature would be free of charge, in line with Facebook’s core offer — but the announcement was enough to send shares in the online dating giant Match.com tumbling by 17 percent.
The 33-year-old CEO also said the dating offer was built from the ground-up with privacy and safety in mind, as he underscored the firm’s commitment to boosting privacy protections.
Facebook’s closely-watched developer conference comes as the giant faces intense global scrutiny over the mass harvesting of personal data by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consultancy that worked for Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign.
Facebook has admitted up to 87 million users may have had their data hijacked in the scandal, which saw Zuckerberg grilled at length by the US Congress last month.
“We need to make sure that never happens again,” Zuckerberg told the audience.
– ‘Clear history’ –
In a related move, Facebook Tuesday announced an upcoming feature called “Clear History” that will allow users to see which apps and websites send the network information, delete the data from their account, and prevent Facebook from storing it.
The social network has already moved to limit the amount of data it shares with third-party applications and plans further steps to prevent a repeat of the Cambridge Analytica debacle, Zuckerberg said.
Facebook is also reviewing applications overall as well as auditing those that accessed large amounts of data to make sure access isn’t abused, he said.
“Security isn’t a problem than you ever fully solve,” Zuckerberg said, outlining the slew of efforts by Facebook to battle election interference, misinformation, spam among other challenges.
“This is an arms race; we are going to be working to stay ahead of our adversaries forever.”
– Message translation –
Facebook separately announced Tuesday that its popular Messenger app would soon be able to translate missives in real time, deploying artificial intelligence to enable text conversations between people using different languages. LR News

The reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) head office building is on fire are false, says the CBN acting Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Isaac Okorafor.
According to Okorafor, the rumor started when a passersby saw a pall of exhaust from the CBN generator house and mistook it for fire.
“The CBN maintains a total security system that triggers safety alarms in the presence of smoke and so all fire engines and personnel received the alert only to discover that it was an unusual pall of exhaust.
“The affected generator has been rested and normal work has been going on uninterrupted, while the engineers are working to rectify the issues with the generator.
“We hereby assure the general public that there has been no fire at our building,” he said.
A correspondent of the NAN who visited the bank headquarters, gathered that a huge smoke, which began at about 6 p.m. from a generator located some few metres away from the CBN main building was noticed by members of the public.
The huge smoke covered a section of the CBN building up to the roof and left the security guards and other staff on duty in frenzy.
However, the situation was brought under control by the staff of bank’s internal fire control department.
NAN reports that fire fighters from the FCT fire service and Julius Berger Plc also had at least two fire trucks on ground.
