Less than 24 hours to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government congress in Imo State a fire outbreak has occurred in the party’s secretariat.

The fire outbreak occurred in one of the offices at the APC secretariat located along Okigwe road in Owerri. Properties and vital documents were destroyed in the fire.

This fire outbreak has created a tensed political atmosphere as some members have alleged that the secretariat was set ablaze by some yet to be identified hoodlums.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 6:00 p.m. during a heavy downpour which made people around the area scamper for safety.

Security operatives and fire service officials later came to quench the fire.

Another eyewitness account who pleaded anonymity says the office was set ablaze by suspected hoodlums who came in a Siena vehicle and disappeared immediately after setting the office ablaze.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Commissioner of police, Dasuki Galadanchi, who later came to the scene of the incident told newsmen that the cause of the fire has not been ascertained but will ensure that the police gets to the root of the matter.

He assured the people of the state to go about their normal business as the police will ensure the safety of lives and property. He said in the meantime the APC office will be cordoned off.

Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike aka. Evans

The trial of suspected kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike popularly known as Evans continued today at the Lagos High Court Sitting in Ikeja with the testimony of the third prosecution witness, Uchenna Okeagwu.

Okeagwu explained to the court on Friday that he paid Evans the sum of £223,000 for the ransom of his boss, Donatus Duru.

While being led in evidence by the Director of Public Prosecution, Titilayo Shitta-Bey, Okeagwu said he was instructed by the kidnappers to drop the money inside a vehicle parked inside a compound somewhere around Mile 2.

“I am a manager at Maydon pharmaceutical company and have been working with them for over seven years. After we heard of the kidnap of Duru, we waited to hear from the kidnappers so we will know what to do to rescue him.

“As the manager of the Idumota branch, we worked towards raising money for the kidnappers when they asked for ransom. After about two months, I was called by Anselm Duru, Donatus’ brother to come and deliver the money to the kidnappers that they have raised £223,000.

“After counting the money, we put it in a polythene bag and wrapped it very well with sellotape and I went with the money. Anselm gave me his telephone that they would use it to direct me to where I would take the ransom to.

“I started receiving calls with the phone from the kidnappers saying I should make no mistakes that if I do, I would be shot. I was asked if I know the way towards Mile 2 and I said yes, I went with the money inside the vehicle, putting the money under the passengers’ seat in the front and I moved out of the compound towards Mile 2,” he explained.

During cross-examination, defence counsel for the first, second, third and fourth defendants, Olukoya Ogungbeje, asked if he saw anybody when he dropped the ransom or gave it to anybody directly, the witness said no.

Evans, Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi, and Victor Aduba are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping before Hakeem Oshodi, a judge of the Ikeja Division of the Lagos State High Court.

Duru was the last victim allegedly kidnapped by the group before their arrest in June last year.

Evans had initially pleaded guilty to the charge of kidnapping but later reversed his plea.

Earlier, Mr Ogungbeje had told the court that he would refrain from further cross-examining the 2nd witness, Donatus Duru, who was the victim of the kidnap.

He told the court that the witness was refusing to answer his questions but preferred instead to give answers to questions he had formulated in his mind.

In response to his statement, the judge said, “It is quite unfortunate that the legal counsel can make such statement that the witness is not answering his questions, but it is his prerogative to conduct defence as he deems fit.

Further proceedings in the matter has been adjourned till June 22.

A pastor’s wife, Mrs Uzoamaka Ibeneme, on Friday, lost her 21-year-old marriage, when an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, dissolved the union on grounds of adultery.
Mr Akin Akinniyi, the court president, who delivered the judgment, said the petitioner,Pastor Joshua Ibeneme was adamant in spite of the mediation by the court and family intervention.
“Since the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court is, therefore, left with no option but to grant him his wish and pronounce the union dissolved.
“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Pastor Joshua Ibeneme and Mrs Uzoamaka Ibeneme dissolved today.
“Both of you will henceforth cease to be husband and wife, each of you should go on his or her separate ways unmolested.
“The court wishes both of you well in your future endeavour.
“Any squabble between both you from now on shall be treated as criminal and any violation of this judgment will be regarded as contempt of court and will attract imprisonment without option of fine,” Akinniyi ruled.
Earlier, the petitioner, a 53-year-old pastor, Joshua Ibeneme, had approached the court to end his 21-year-old marriage to his wife, Uzoamaka, who he said, was messing around with his church members.
“My wife had sexual affair with two of my church members, a deacon and a bishop. Both of them were telling my other members that they slept with my wife because she enticed them.
“Whenever I return from a trip, my last born always tells me that men came to pick and drop my wife. Even God told me to divorce her or else she will destroy my ministry,” he claimed.
The petitioner said that his wife denied him sex for five years.
“My wife starved me of sex for more than five years; whenever I want to sleep with her, she would give one excuse or the other and in fact, she has moved out of my room to a separate room.
“But she gives it to my members freely,” the pastor said.
The pastor said that his wife was always mocking and embarrassing him in public places, telling people about his sexual performance.
He said that Uzoamaka always accused him of having affairs with any female member, who came to the house for counselling.
“She accused them of dating me and also went to their houses to fight them. Her behaviour has chased many members away from my church,” he said.
He begged the court to divorce the loveless union, claiming he was no longer in love with his wife.
However, the respondent, Uzoamaka, denied having sex with their church members but accused her husband of infidelity.
“It is women that cause our frequent fighting, they are the problem in our home and my husband’s lust for them is very high.
“I never slept with the two men, who claimed that they slept with me, they just wanted to tarnish my image, my husband is dating the wife of the deacon”.
According to her, the pastor calls her derogatory names in the public such as “prostitute”.
The 45-year-old teacher said that she starved her husband of sex because she hated sex, adding that she married him because she wanted children.
The mother of three, however, begged the court not to grant her husband’s wish for dissolution of the marriage as she was still in love with him.

Chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi

The Senate has rejected the claim by the police that it invited the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, out of personal reasons.

Contrary to the claim, the Senate insists it acted in accordance with the law.

Chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, stated this on Friday during his appearance on Channels Television’s breakfast programme Sunrise Daily.

“By virtue of the powers of the constitution, we have the powers to invite anybody on a subject that we make laws on,” he said.

“If you check the Constitution also, Section 215 where the Police Force is mentioned, you will see that the functions and how they are going to be organised is subjected to a provision that the National Assembly shall make a law to that effect.”

Sabi-Abdullahi’s comments came 24 hours after the Commissioner of Police (Legal), Force Headquarters, Mr. David Igbodo, said the police would challenge the Senate’s declaration on the IGP in court.

The Senate had declared the IGP an enemy of democracy and unfit to hold office on Wednesday after he failed to appear before the lawmakers three times, opting to send a representative.

The lawmakers had invited him to appear before them over the killings in parts of the country and the alleged maltreatment of one of their colleagues – Senator Dino Melaye.

Igbodo, however, defended his principal, on Thursday and accused the Senators of making the issue personal.

“Official functions of the IGP can be performed by the DIG or the Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs). So why are they insisting that it must be the IGP to appear in person?” Igbodo said during an appearance on Sunrise Daily.

But the Senate’s spokesman insisted that the decision of the IGP to delegate his deputy to appear before the Senate was wrong considering the high rate of killings across some states of the federation.

He added, “In a situation where we are having a crisis, the delegation here is the duty of the police officer in charge of preventing crime and ensuring peaceful law and order.

“What we are talking about here is something that is in the realm of policy, strategy in which the organisation ought to conduct its affairs.”

To the Senate, the IGP ought to have personally honoured the invitation and briefed the lawmakers on efforts being made to halt the killings and whatever obstacle the police were facing in stopping the killings.

Minister of women’s affairs, Aisha Alhassan

The Federal Government has re-inaugurated the National Child’s Rights Implementation Committee (NCRIC ), in order to boost the observance and popularisation of the provisions of the Child’s Rights Act, Act, 2003.
Mrs Ifeoma Anagbogu, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja, noted that Nigeria inaugurated NCRIC in 1994.
“However due to funding constraints, the committee has not met since 2010.
“ It is in realisation of the fore-going that this committee is being inaugurated today.’’
She said that since its establishment, NCRIC, has recorded landmark achievements in the promotion and protection of the rights of children in Nigeria.
“The committee in collaboration with the Ministry and UNICEF spear-headed the domestication of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and AU Charter through the passage of the Child’s Rights Act on July 31, 2003.
“ To further underscore the importance of the committee it has also been recognised as major structure in the implementation of the Child’s Rights Act.’’
According to Anagbogu, it is the responsibility of the committee to review and prepare periodic reports on the state of implementation of the rights of the child, among others.
She said that the Ministry collaborated with the Rule of Law and Anti- Corruption (RoLAC) Programme of the British Council, to reconstitute the membership as well as inaugurate the committee.
Priscilla Ankut, Gender and Social Inclusion Manager of RoLAC, who spoke, lamented that only 24 states had domesticated the Child’s Rights Act.
Ankut who said that the committee has a lot to do, also stressed the need to strengthen the family courts.
She said that children should have a say and contribute on issues affecting them.
Dr Macjohn Nwaobiala, who responded on behalf of other members, said since the committee has been re- constituted, it should not be allowed to go moribund again.
Nwaobiala, a retired federal permanent secretary, recommended that the committee should establish a well staffed, equipped and functional secretariat, strengthen cooperation and collaboration with relevant government ministries and agencies.
He also stressed the need for the establishment of NCRIC data base, re-establishment of link with UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, insert a budget line for NCRIC activities, among others.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Woman Affairs and Social Development is chairman of the committee, while members were drawn from relevant ministries, agencies and partners.

The police authorities have resolved to drag the senate to the court to challenge the untoward action and resolution against the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris
The plan by the police to approach the courts came barely 48 hours after the angry senators declared Idris as unfit to hold public office
The Commissioner of Police (Legal), Force Headquarters, Mr. David Igbodo, stated this on Thursday while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
“That declaration, we are going to challenge it (in court),” he said.
“We want the court to interpret whether each time the IGP is invited to appear before the National Assembly (NASS), whether he must, as a matter of fact, appear in person.”
The police boss and the National Assembly have not been on the same page since the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye over offences bordering on alleged murder and unlawful possession of firearms among several others.
Idris was first summoned on April 25, but he failed to appear, rather sent a DIG to represent him at the Senate, noting that he was on an official assignment to Bauchi with President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was summoned for the second time to appear on May 2, but he again failed to honour it, delegating Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Joshak Habila, whom the Senate refused to entertain.
Igbodo explained that the IGP acted in accordance with the law by delegating the DIG to represent him in an official capacity.
“Official functions of the IGP can be performed by the DIG or the Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs). So why are they insisting that it must be the IGP to appear in person?
“What is personal about it? The facts are known to the DIG (Operations). The facts are known to all the AIGs. They are expected to brief the NASS, why are they making it personal?”
Igbodo further accused the Senators of making the issue personal, wondering why the police chief cannot assign another senior officer on official assignments.
The police had earlier absolved the IGP of blames, stressing that he is not an enemy of democracy as declared by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki.
Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, had in a statement on Wednesday said the police is rather the first defender of democracy in Nigeria.
He said, “It is important to correct the impression created in the minds of the people from the Senate’s resolution that the IGP is not and will not be an enemy to democracy.”
According to Moshood, the Senate’s declaration of the Police boss as an enemy of democracy is a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting, and mischief aimed at casting aspersions on the integrity of the IGP.
