Eight riot policemen lost their lives during a clash between the Police Joint Operation Team and bandits in Zamfara State last Thursday.

About 104 hoodlums were reportedly killed by the police team during the incident.

It was gathered on Saturday that two policemen were still missing among the Police Mobile Force Squadron 4 from Ibadan, Oyo State, who took part in the operation against the criminals at Birnin Mogaji Village, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

This is contrary to claims by the police spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, who had claimed only one policeman lost his life during the operation.

Police sources told SUNDAY PUNCH that the rate of police casualties informed the decision of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to dispatch the DIG Operations, Joshiak Habila, to Zamfara State to coordinate the operation.

A source said, “Over 100 bandits were killed during the operation, but we lost eight MOPOL officers while two are missing. Normally, during such operations, it is not unusual for us to have casualties, but the cheering news is that we were able to decimate the bandits.”

It was gathered that the police authorities downplayed the police losses and quickly deployed DIG Habila to Zamfara on Thursday night with additional Special Forces’ personnel, Counter-Terrorism Units, Police Mobile Force, Federal Anti-Robbery Squads and three surveillance helicopters.

“Though the police had an upper hand during the encounter with the bandits, the leadership lied about the police casualties.

“If it was only a policeman that lost his life and normalcy had been restored in the area as claimed, why did they (leaders) send a DIG with additional operatives and equipment to the scene?” another source said.

Jimoh, however, denied the loss of eight policemen, stating that only one operative died while 12 were injured.

“I have just spoken to the CP (commissioner of police) and the DIG and they said only one policeman died and 12 were injured. Two or three officers, who were missing, have been found, and we are still patrolling the general area,” he said on the telephone on Saturday.

The police had said the PJOT operatives destroyed 50 criminal hideouts in the Zurmi LGA and recovered 500 cattle and 79 sheep during the operation.

The force said since their deployment on November 9, the PJOT had arrested over 85 suspects, recovered 27 AK47 rifles and 52 locally-fabricated guns and other dangerous weapons.

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to do everything within his powers as the Commander-in-Chief to continue to empower the soldiers through provision of equipment as well as their entitlements and welfare generally.

Buhari who spoke at the Chief of Army Staff Conference in Maiduguri last week said he is determined to ensure that every citizen feels safe and secure in all parts of the country, adding that this can only be achieved through enhancement in welfare and cooperation among the security agencies.

But, while the president was making promises, the combatants on the field have continued to count their losses and deprivations by the commanding authorities. Speaking with Sunday INDEPENDENT, one of the soldiers on the battle field decry the N30, 000 stipend as monthly salaries, accusing their leaders of feeding the president with wrong information as well short changing in other entitlements.

“The N30, 000.00 per month is inadequate, no helmet, no fragmented jacket and feeding poor. No efficient and functional weapons. No special promotion and if at all, selective.”

Another soldier, who also pleaded anonymity said, “There is no morale at all, when you see the day you vthank God but not sure of the next one. Our oga stopped in Maiduguri, he did not go near where the thing happened. He didn’t even visit the division where it happened. We are still having attacks here and there, but we always pursue them. What we need is the original weapons not fake ones from China that will be having stoppages.”

However, the president told his audience that the officers and soldiers who are fighting against the curse of terrorism in the North East deserve all the attention our country’s leadership can demonstrate to them.

His words: “I want to reassure you that as your Commander-In-Chief, I will do everything within my powers to continue empowering you by providing all the necessary equipment, force multipliers and enablers required for you to prevail on the field. I also want you to be aware that I am currently looking into measures to improve your entitlements and welfare generally.

“Let me remind the audience that the cardinal objectives of this administration remain the entrenchment of security, restructuring the economy and the fight against corruption, to ensure a steady, sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

“In addition, our commitment to entrenching purposeful and accountable leadership remains firm because it is the base from which peace, security and national development would be built on.

“I therefore wish to reiterate that leaders of all strata of society including our Armed Forces must embrace the wind of CHANGE that is blowing across the country for good. There must be cooperation at inter-Service and inter-agency levels.

“To this end, the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs must work closely together as well as with other security agencies to improve on strategies that will defeat terrorism, militancy and other forms of criminal activities in our country.”

The president acknowledged the fact that “in the recent months and in recent days there have been some operational losses in the Northern part of Borno State, particularly in Jilli, Arege and Metele. I know that you are doing your best to reverse this trend and I want to assure you that no effort will be spared in providing the necessary support you require to complete the task. We remain committed to ending the crisis in the North East and making the entire area safe for all. I urge you all to keep up the good work.”

Executive members of NYCN

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has given old politicians up to 2023 to retire from politics and give room for younger ones.
The Council urged the old politicians to rather give room to their children and grandchildren to participate in elections.
The Deputy President of NYCN, Amb. Innocent Nduanya, gave the advice in an interview which held at the ongoing National Youth and Merit award summit in Abuja.
Nduanya noted that money politics was the major challenge facing the nation and the menace had prevented the youths who make up to 80 per cent of the population from active politics.
He added that the high cost of nomination forms, campaigns and most recently, the problem of vote buying have further compound the problems of the youths.
Nduanya said that NYCN under the leadership of their President Bello Shagari has set up machineries capable of changing the current trend and narratives in the country.
“NYCN has embark on a campaign to sensitise and encouraging the youths to consider themselves as critical stakeholders in governance of the country and they should therefore contest all elective positions.
“The council would provide the necessary support and logistics to the electorate in favour of any youth aspirant; we cannot afford to be left out from the global trend where youths are taking over leadership positions in their respective countries.
“If the major political parties continue to gang up and deny qualified youths from contesting on their platforms by way of imposing exorbitant nomination fee, then NYCN may register a political party to provide an alternative platform for the teeming youths to achieve their ambition,’’ Nduanya said.
