The Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, has commenced exams for its students despite the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The school on Monday commenced its 2017/2018 second semester exams.

The media had reported that ASUU had, on November 4 2018, embarked on industrial action.

Since then, academic activities have been suspended in various universities.

However, some departments in OAU are carrying on with academics as they have lecturers who are not members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The lecturers said they are members of the Congress Of Nigeria University Academics, CONUA, adding that the industrial action was not binding on them.

Students of English and Literary Studies department have been receiving lectures and sat for exams on Monday.

The university’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarenwaju told TheCable that the school calendar would not be extended.

“There’s nothing that suggests we are going to extend any calendar. Don’t let us be speculative, when we get to the bridge we will cross it.

“The senate of the university is in charge of the academic activities, if they find it to extend, they will and if not, there’s nothing anybody can do about it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and don’t let us be speculative

“Whether they are going to extend it or not has not stopped the students from reading, they should read.”

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has re-fixed the arraignment of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, to Jan. 22.
The change of date for Onnoghen’s arraignment followed argument by the defence counsel that the CJN was not properly served.
Lead prosecuting counsel, Mr Aliyu Umar (SAN), conceded that Justice Onnoghen, was not properly served with the summons to appear before the CCT in Abuja on Monday.
Umar conceded that the CJN was not personally served with the charges and the court’s summons as required by the law.
He, therefore, requested the three-man tribunal led by Danladi Umar to direct a fresh service on the CJN.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Onnoghen was absent from Monday’s proceedings scheduled for his arraignment before the CCT on charges of non-declaration of his assets.
NAN also reports that 45 Senior Advocates of Nigeria and 55 senior lawyers represented the CJN at the tribunal.
The tribunal chairman upon inquiry about Onnoghen’s absence from court, discovered from the defence team, led by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), that the CJN needed not to be present having filed a motion to challenge the tribunal’s jurisdiction.
Olanipekun said he and other defence lawyers only appeared in court in protest against the jurisdiction of the tribunal.
He also said from the account given by the court official earlier in the proceedings, the CJN was not served with the charges and and summons personally, but through his aide.
Olanipekun insisted that the law requires that the defendant be personally served.
But the prosecuting lawyer said the law only requires the defendant to be aware of the pending charges, and that it was the CJN’s choice to ask his aide to receive the charges and summons on his behalf.
After series of argument which lasted for about 45 minutes, the prosecuting counsel conceded that the service of the charges and the summons ought to have been personally served on Onnoghen.
“By what the registrar has said, although the defendant was the one who directed his personal assistant to accept service on his behalf and what the law says is that he must be personally served.
“We agree that the service should be properly done. The processes should be served personally on him.
“If, after the service is done, and the defendant is not present, we can then argue whether or not he needs to be present on the grounds that he has filed a motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court.”

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has called on the Federal Government not to sweep the causes of the killings of soldiers in the war against Boko Haram under the carpet.

He made the call yesterday during an Interdenominational Church Service for the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at National Christian Centre, Abuja.

His words: “We remember especially those who have died in the on-going conflict in the North-East, whether they perished in combat or in a ambush, or as a result of alleged inadequate arms or culpable poor military tactics.

“Complaints in this regard are rife, and they should not be silenced or swept under the carpet. Rather all such complaints ought to be properly investigated and everyone found responsible held accountable, no matter how high up in rank and position. The blood of every Nigerian is precious and must not be carelessly wasted.”

Noting that Nigerian Armed Forces had been actively involved in promoting world peace, Onaiyekan said Nigeria’s responsibility for world peace should start from ‘around us’.”

The Catholic Archbishop further called for good remuneration for the Armed Forces, so that they can perform their responsibilities better.

He also urged the government to timely pay the full pensions of retired security personnel, adding that failure to pay the pensions of the security personnel, was a national shame that should never have been allowed to occur.

THE Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, was Sunday, redeployed to the Force headquarters in Abuja, as the Commissioner of Police in-charge of the Explosive Ordinance Unit, Police sources hinted.

He will be succeeded by Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, the Commissioner of Police in-charge of the Explosive Ordinance Unit.

Vanguard gathered that Egbetokun will be in acting capacity until he is confirmed by the Inspector-General of Police.

It was also gathered that Egbetokun was a former Chief Security Officer to a leading politician in the South West.

However, Vanguard gathered that Edgal was yet to receive the signal letter of his redeployment as at 5p.m yesterday.

Edgal was appointed the substantive CP in Lagos on September 1, 2017, having served in acting capacity, after the redeployment of his predecessor, Fatai Owoseni.

During his tenure, the outgoing CP was able to curb the notorious Badoo cult that terrorized the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

Angry reactions

Expressing displeasure over Edgal’s redeployment, a senior Police officer, who pleaded anonymity, described him as an operational cop who has been able to reduce the crime rate in Lagos.

The police officer said: “Since he assumed office as CP, he has been able to tackle the menace of Badoo cult. We all know how people were fleeing their abodes in Ikorodu when Badoo boys held sway. Today, the story has changed because CP Edgal chose to lead the operation that brought the reign of badoo terror to an end.

“He is one officer who does not sit in his office to give directive. He would lead the operation, no matter how volatile the place is.”

Another Assistant Commissioner of Police (names withheld) said: “I have not heard officially. But sane police officers will miss him because he put everyone on their toes. He is proactive and responsive. He would visit any division unannounced at any given time.”

Police keep mum

Efforts to get the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Jimoh Moshood to react to Edgal’s redeployment proved abortive as he failed to answer his telephone calls.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, could not also be reached for comments.
