President Buhari & Moshood Abiola

President Muhammadu Buhari has announced June 12 as the new date which Democracy Day will be celebrated in Nigeria.

He also conferred a posthumous GCFR title on the presumed winner of June 12, 1993, presidential election, Moshood Abiola.

The President in a tweet on his official handle explained why June 12 will replace May 29. He noted that June 12 is a more symbolic day.

“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.

“We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to Chief MKO Abiola.

“In the view of Nigerians, as shared by this Administration, June 12, 1993, was and is far more symbolic of Democracy in the Nigerian context than May 29, or even October 1,” his tweet read.

President Buhari also conferred a national honour on Baba Gana Kingibe and recognised late Gani Fawehinmi for his role in the actualisation of the June 12 elections.

“Chief Abiola’s running mate, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, is also to be awarded a GCON.

“Furthermore, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, a tireless fighter for human rights and democracy, and for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 elections, will be posthumously awarded a GCON.”

Buhari said further that, June 12, 1993, election was the freest, fairest and most peaceful election since Nigeria’s Independence.

“June 12, 1993, was the day millions of Nigerians expressed their Democratic will in the freest, fairest and most peaceful elections since our Independence. That the outcome of that election was not upheld by the then military Govt does not detract from its democratic credentials,” he said.

The commemoration and investiture, the President added, will take place on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, “a date which in future years will replace May 29 as a National Public holiday in the celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.”

The protesting members of Joint Action Committee at the main gate of Osun State University

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) members of staff in Osun State University (UNIOSUN) have staged a protest, demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Labo Popoola and the dissolution of the Governing Council.

The Joint Action Committee which includes members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) from the six campuses across the state gathered at the Osogbo campus, on Wednesday, and blocked the main entrance into the institution, in protest.

Supported by Unions from other institutions in the Southwest, the protesting members accused the Vice Chancellor of misappropriation and embezzlement of funds in the institution.

Among other issues, the protesting members alleged that there are plans to suspend and terminate the appointments of some union members by the governing council for daring to speak up against mismanagement of the institution.

They thereby called for the dissolution of the governing council for allegedly covering up the atrocities of the Vice Chancellor.

The Chairman of JAC, Lekan Adiat, in an interview with Channels Television, called on the state government to wade into the crisis at UNIOSUN.

The crisis in UNIOSUN has lingered for over eight months with the school calendar disrupted.

Efforts to reach the Vice-chancellor, Professor Popoola for his reaction proved abortive as he was said to be out of the country.

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate one of its members, Muhammed Kazaure, over his purported comments on an alleged plot to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

The lawmaker was said to have accused some lawmakers of achieving the purported motive by collecting signatures from their colleagues.

He reportedly made the allegation on Tuesday during an interview with reporters in Abuja, shortly after the emergency joint executive session of the National Assembly.

Kazaure’s colleagues, Nicholas Ossai and Kingsley Chinda, told the House during Wednesday’s plenary that the lawmaker accused them of gathering signatures to impeach the president.

He was consequently directed to appear before the House Committee on Rights and Privileges for questioning.

Meanwhile, the House has also resolved to investigate another member, Abdulmumin Jibrin, for allegedly accusing some lawmakers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of planning to impeach the President.

Shortly after the joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday in Abuja, Mr Jibrin issued a statement on behalf of lawmakers under the aegis of the Parliamentary Support Group of the Senate and House of Representatives.

In the statement, he faulted the resolutions of the lawmakers asked the National Assembly leadership to remove the log in its own eyes before removing the speck in the eye of the President.

The lawmaker, who represents Bebeji/Kiru Federal Constituency of Kano, is being probed barely three months after he returned from a suspension which lasted for 17 months. LR News

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday struck out a suit seeking for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to disclose the cost of President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical bill in London.

The plaintiff in the suit which is the Incorporated Trustees of Advocacy for Societal Rights Advancement and Development Initiative (ASRADI) led by its Executive Director, Adeolu Oyinlola, Specifically sought for an order to compel the CBN and its Governor, to provide information on the amount released for Buhari’s medical treatment in London.

The plaintiff also asked the court to declare that the refusal of the CBN to provide the information requested in a letter dated October 19, 2017, “amounted to a wrongful denial of information and is a flagrant violation of the provisions of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2011.”

Delivering judgement on the suit, Justice John Tsoho on Tuesday held that the applicant’s application for judicial review as against the action of the CBN which was “misconceived and misguided”.

Justice Tsoho noted that sections 12, 14, and 15 of FOI Act provide exemptions to the request for information.

The court held that section 14(1b) of the FOI Act provides that subject to subsection 2, a public institution must deny the application on information that contains personal information, personal files etc of appointees, political office holders etc.

It is also the contention of the court that by virtue of section 14(2) of the FOI Act, the disclosure of information pertaining to political office holders must be with the consent of the person.

In this case, Justice Tsoho held that President Buhari is a political office holder, and therefore, information concerning his health must not be disclosed except with his consent.

In addition, the court observed that following the request by the applicant for information on Buhari’s health issue, the request, from the deposition in the counter affidavit of the 1st and 2nd respondents showed that the letter of request was forwarded to the office of the Chief of Staff to President Buhari.

The transfer of the request letter was made in accordance with section 5(1) of the FOI Act.

Consequently, in line with section 5(2) of the Act, the court stated that the forwarding of the request for information was deemed to have been properly made.

In view of this, the court held that the applicant’s request would have been channelled to the office of the Chief of Staff to President Buhari. LR News

A surgeon is preparing to select three women to undergo Britain’s first womb transplant later in the year, following permission granted to British medics to carry out the procedures.

Report says three women are among 50 infertile patients on a waiting list for the pioneering operation and they will be informed “within a few weeks”.

The operation, which has a price tag of 50,000 pounds (about 66,700 dollars), has already been a success in Sweden and the United States.

The world’s first successful womb transplant was carried out on a Swedish woman in 2013.
If the British operation is successful, the first baby could arrive 2019 and then give hope to the 50,000 infertile women in the UK.

A team won approval from regulators three years ago to transplant wombs from dead donors but has been delayed by rules about collecting the organs.

Doctors now say they will also try to use live donors.

“We have got all our ducks in a row this time, we should be ready to go,” said Richard Smith of Imperial College London, who is leading the efforts.

About 15,000 women in Britain of childbearing age do not have a womb, according to press reports. Xinhua/LR News

The threat by the National Assembly to invoke constitutional power against the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is a “gangster behaviour’’, Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum, lashed on Tuesday.
The lawmakers incurred the displeasure of the South West socio-cultural group, following the threat by the lawmakers against the executive on Tuesday.
The forum said that the continuing interference of the National Assembly in the investigation of its indicted members could truncate the country’s democracy if not checked.
The forum, said the interference in such investigation was more like “a gangsters’ behaviour” by people who swore on oath to protect the country and its citizens.
Mr Akin Malaolu, Secretry-General of the forum, said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja that the National Assembly was on a mission to truncate the country’s democracy due to lawful investigations carried out by government agents against some of its members.
He added that the National Assembly should remember that government was the creation of the people including the Senate and the House of representatives.
He maintained that the role of government was to disallow impunity and absolute liberty to commit heinous crimes, some of which he said were noticeable amongst leaders of today.
He added that the threat to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari for performing his duties was uncalled for.
The members of the National Assembly came out of a closed door joint session to unveil a 12-point demand bothering on insecurity, war against corruption and respect for lawmakers.
They threatened that they would not hesitate to invoke their constitutional power against the executive if it failed to implement the demands.
Their action is coming in the heat of the invitation of Senate President Bukola Saraki by the police to answer to his indictment by some five robbery gang leaders who led the attack on six banks and a police station in Offa on April 5, an operation in which 33 people were killed. LR News

Mr. Muhammed Adamu, a drug addict, who killed his 24-year-old girlfriend out of jealousy, has been arrested by the Yobe state police.
The suspect has confessed he killed Hauwa Muhammad because he discovered that his heart-throb had started dating another man.
The Yobe Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdulmaliki Sumonu, has confirmed the arrest of the 30- year- old, who has made a confessional statement.
“I am very happy to tell you that the perpetrator of the 29th May killing of Hauwa Muhammad has been apprehended and has made a confessional statement”
Narrating how he committed the crime, the assailant said: “My name is Muhammed Isa Adamu from Potiskum. I started dating Hauwa since 2014. She was obedient to me. She never offended me.
“I have been abusing drugs for almost five years. I even went to Azare General Hospital to seek medical advice in order to get rid of my addiction.
“I tried as much as possible to convince my family to meet Hauwa’s over our marital arrangement but my effort became unsuccessful.
“Eventually another guy started dating her. That was the beginning of our problem. She told me that if my family could not meet hers, I should allow the other guy to do so.
“Apart from that, there was no problem between the two of us.
“One day I didn’t know what happened to me, I took my drugs and decided to end the lives of both of us. I killed her alone with a knife.
“I equally wanted to kill myself but she stopped me from doing that while she was bleeding. She said I should not kill myself. May her soul rest in peace.
“She further advised me, before she bled to death, that I should repent and seek Allah’s forgiveness. I then promised her not to kill myself and that I will report myself to the police.
“Which is why when the DPO ‘C’ division called me, I reported at once”, the suspect said.
Adamu is a fresh graduate from Federal College of Technical Education, Potiskum, affiliated to Federal University of Technology, Minna.
He advised hard drug users to quit the habit as it would only lead to a dead end.
Hauwa was reported to have left home on 29 May to buy a loaf of bread but she never return.
