More than 60 Indonesians are dead and dozens have been hospitalised from drinking illegal homemade alcohol, authorities said Monday, with the toll steadily climbing.

Police conducted raids in cities across the world’s biggest Muslim majority country to arrest vendors selling the cheap homebrew.
Most Indonesians practice a moderate form of Islam and alcohol is available in big cities.

But high taxes make it expensive so poorly paid workers sometimes turn to potentially dangerous homemade alcohol.

In 2016, 36 people died in Central Java after drinking locally-bought homebrew.

In the latest incidents, the numbers of deaths — including eight in Papua  — has been rising over the past week, with the death toll standing at 62 on Monday, according to police and a hospital in West Java.

Seven people have been arrested for allegedly selling the bootleg alcohol, including a man in West Java who mixed mosquito repellent into his homemade concoction.

“He mixed (pure alcohol) with ginseng, cough medicine and mosquito repellent,” local police chief Agung Budi Maryoto told a press conference Monday.

In another case, a vendor who has been arrested admitted he had mixed pure alcohol with Coca-Cola and an energy drink, police said.

Police said they are chasing other sellers and distributors of homebrew.

“We believe there is a big distributor behind this case,” East Jakarta police chief Tony Surya Putra said at the weekend, referring to the deaths of two dozen people in one part of the capital.

US Forces confirmed Monday they had killed a top Islamic State commander in Afghanistan in an airstrike, describing the leader as “key” to foreign fighters entering the country’s north.

Qari Hikmatullah — also spelt Hekmat — and his bodyguard were killed in the northern province of Faryab on Thursday, US Forces-Afghanistan said in a statement.

The airstrike happened in Bal Chiragh district, the statement said. That borders Darzab district in Jowzjan province, which Afghan officials on Saturday had given as the location of the airstrike. Some had also said the incident happened on Friday.

Hikmatullah was a “native Uzbek” who previously belonged to other militant groups, including the Taliban, before joining IS’s local franchise in northern Afghanistan, US Forces said.

The group has established a stronghold in Jowzjan after coming under intense pressure in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

Afghanistan’s defence ministry said on Saturday that Hikmatullah was involved in or responsible for “deadly terrorist attacks” and had been replaced by Mawlawi Habib-ul-Rahman.

General John Nicholson, the top US commander in Afghanistan, vowed to kill “any successors” to Hikmatullah, adding that IS would be “eliminated”.

Asked about the discrepancy in the location of the airstrike, defence ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanish told AFP on Monday that some district borders were not marked clearly.

Afghan and US forces have ramped up airstrikes and ground offensives against IS fighters in Jowzjan in recent months as the group seeks to expand its foothold in the country.

Afghan security forces last month detained a French woman fighting for IS in Jowzjan. AFP has reported that French and Algerian fighters, some arriving from Syria, have joined IS in the restive province.

Also on Monday, at least six people were killed and another seven were wounded when explosives on a three-wheeled motorcycle exploded in the western province of Herat, officials said. LR News

President Muhammadu Buhari has announced his intention to run in the 2019 Presidential election.
The announcement was made on Monday in Abuja at the All Progressives Congress(APC)’s National Executive meeting.
Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, an ardent Buhari supporter, tweeted the announcement on Monday:
Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau told newsmen after the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Executive Committee (NEC) closed-door meeting in Abuja that the president announced the intention at the meeting.
Lalong, whose 10-member committee advised the APC on how to overcome the contentious tenure elongation for its executive leadership committees at all levels, said the committee’s report had restored unity in the party.
He said that the report, which was submitted to the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Friday, and considered by NEC members on Monday, was accepted by all party leaders, including Buhari.
´´Everybody´s interest was considered in the report and it was a unanimous vote and adoption of the recommendations that were made.
´´The president felt so happy and excited because of this unity in the party; he has now considered and also accepted the appeal by several members of the society, party and everybody that he will re-contest the 2019 election.
´´He has accepted that he is going to contest again the position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,´´ Lalong said.
The Latest Reality Metro reports that the Monday’s NEC meeting was the third since Feb. 27, when the tenure extension of the Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee (NWC) was approved.
But, at another NEC meeting on March 27, Buhari opposed the one-year extension decision, saying it was illegal and unconstitutional.
He had explained that the decision was causing disaffection within the party, and had led to litigation by some members not comfortable with the matter.

Consequently, the party leadership constituted the 10-member committee, headed by Lalong, to look into the issue and advise it on the way forward

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says its Special Forces, in conjunction with some Nigerian Army troops, successfully foiled a suicide bombing attack by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) at the University of Maiduguri, Borno  on Sunday night.
AVM Olatokunbo Adesanya, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, confirmed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
“The BHT suicide bombers tried to gain access into the University but were quickly detected by the NAF Special Forces.
“Meanwhile, the vest on one of the suicide bombers detonated before they could gain access into the hostel, leading to a commotion.
“However, there was no reported fatality except for the suicide bomber, whose counterparts immediately fled, when the NAF Special Forces and the NA troops opened fire on them.
“The NAF Agusta Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) then went in pursuit of the fleeing BHTs, following which an additional suicide bomber was identified and neutralized,” he said.
Adesanya said the NAF Agusta LUH was still searching for the other fleeing  terrorists  at the time of filing this report.
“Members of the populace, especially around the University premises are, therefore, requested to be very vigilant,” the NAF spokesman said(NAF)
