The Federal Government is not losing its grip on the nation’s security despite the recent numerous challenges the nation, including the herdsmen-farmers crisis.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, made the assertion in an interview with Channels Television in Abuja.

“Since the beginning of this year it’s been tough, it’s been challenging,” he said when he appeared on Sunrise Daily on Thursday.

“We have had all sorts of criminality, all sorts of wanton killing but then, what I would not agree with is the government losing monopoly of anything.”

The Presidential aide argued that nobody ever has the monopoly of violence, saying it could flare at any given time as long as people have access to the instruments of violence such as arms and ammunition.

He noted that the government has a responsibility to protect the lives and property of the citizens and that is exactly what they are doing.

Terrible Times For Nigeria

Adesina who believes the nation would overcome its challenges soon added that it is only a matter of time before the people start to notice the government’s efforts in addressing the security challenges.

He said, “We know that Nigeria has always lived dangerously as a country; many times Nigeria had been on the edge and it just needed a tip to fall over, but it will pull back at the last minute.”

“I don’t believe Nigeria will ever become a failed state but that’s my personal opinion; those who believe that we are on the verge of becoming a failed state have a right to their opinion … I don’t think Nigeria will fail.”

The President’s spokesman, however, took a swipe at those he said were taking advantage of the herdsmen-farmers crisis.

He explained that this prompted the Presidency to disclose what the government was doing to rekindle the hopes of Nigerians, saying no leader would be happy to hear that the citizens of his country were killed.

Adesina was confident that President Muhammadu Buhari would not be distracted but would continue to ensure the security of the lives and property of Nigerians across the country.

“A lot of people are politicising everything,” he lamented, adding, “They are saying this failed, that failed because they have their own political agenda. They are not dispassionate about what is happening in the country.”

“We are not there yet in terms of security; these are terrible times for Nigeria viz-a-viz the security situation but then, will we get there? I’m sure we will if only the striding voices of those politicising the thing will not predominate over what government is doing,” said the Presidential aide.

Abubakar Kori, a dwarf, who facilitated the suicide bombing activities of  ‘Boko-Haram’ insurgents, said he was paid not less than N5, 000 for each suicide bomb attack carried out by the insurgents in Maiduguri.
Kori, 25, is among the 22 people arrested by the police in Borno and Yobe for their alleged involvement in suicide bombing activities carried out by the insurgents.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he received N5, 000 as payment for facilitating the execution of each suicide bomb attack in Maiduguri and its environs.
Kori, who was a security guard at a fuel dispensing station in Dalori area of Maiduguri, said that he participated in several suicide bomb attacks in recent months in the metropolis.
“My role is to keep the Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) for onward delivery to another person who will carry out the attack.
“On different occasions, two of my acquaintances gave a parcel to keep for somebody, who will come and take it.
“I normally kept the parcel in my duty post; the appointed person would come and picked it; after successful delivery, they paid me N5, 000.
“We reside in the same neighborhood in Maiduguri;  they always told me that the parcel was given to them by one Ba’Adam, and asked me to keep it.
“They introduced me to Ba’Adam, who is the mastermind of the attacks,” he revealed.
On his part, Adam Mustapha, a.k.a Ba’Adam, admitted that he coordinated various suicide bomb attacks, which resulted in the death of hundreds of people in Maiduguri.
Ba’Adam, 20,  narrated that he had coordinated several bomb attacks at Bulukuntu, Baga road, 333 Artillery gate, Customs, Post Office and Muna Garage areas of Maiduguri.
“On two occasions, I was paid N200, 000 for the successful execution of bomb attacks.
“Most of the time I had to pester them before payment could be made to me,” he said.
When asked whether he had cause at any time to regret his actions, Ba’Adam said that he was never remorseful at any given time.
Another suspect, Ibrahim Mala, 48, also admitted to aiding suicide bomb attacks in Maiduguri, sales of rustled animals and supply of logistics to the insurgents in the bush.
Mala, a butcher and resident of Dalori-Kakere village in the outskirts of Maiduguri, revealed that the insurgents were supplying sheep and provided him with N180, 000 loans, to enable him to run his business.
“They paid me N5, 000 for safe keeping of IEDs, and they also sent me on errands to buy consumable items for them.
“I bought the items at the market and kept it at my home; some persons would come at night, pick and deliver same to members of the group hiding in the forest.
“Some of the items included torch lights, matches, sandals, kola nuts, cubes and clothing materials.
“I saved money in dealing with the group and bought a plot of land worth over N420, 000.
“I know that they are Boko-Haram insurgents and my wife was not happy with my dealings with them; she asked me to stop but it is too late,” he narrated.
Commenting on the arrest, Mr Abba Kyari, the DCP, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), said that the suspects were apprehended by the police in various communities in Borno and Yobe.
Kyari called on members of the public to report suspicious persons and movement to the security agencies.
He also called on the people to cooperate with the police and other security agencies to end insurgency and restore  peace to the North-East sub-region.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Benue chapter says it has not given Gov. Samuel Ortom any red card contrary to claims by the governor.
The Director of Publicity of APC in the state, Mr Peterhot Apeh made the denial in a statement on Thursday in Makurdi.
“We wish to state categorically that the Benue State chapter of the APC has not at any point given a red card to Gov. Samuel Ortom or any other member of the party.
“Rather, the party at its last state Congress in Makurdi endorsed the governor, and leader of the party in the state, Sen. George Akume for another term in office.
“The endorsement of the governor and leader of the party was meant to further unite the party in the state.
“And provide a stable political atmosphere for the governor as well as the leader of the party to deliver better dividends of democracy to the people of the state.’’
“In return for the endorsement by the state chapter of the party, we demand from the governor improved welfare for the people of the state,’’ Apeh said.
According to him, these demands have become necessary due to several interventions by the Federal Government in form of bailouts, Paris Club Refunds, budgetary supports.
He said that in spite these and the huge borrowings by Ortom, the state was still clouded with huge salary arrears.
“This includes unpaid pensions of retired civil servants, huge deficits of basic infrastructure and porous security situation bedeviling the state.
“We demand explanations on the handling of affairs, especially issues bothering on security in the state.
“We are grossly embarrassed that these issues raised with the governor in confidence for the purpose of repositioning governance to improve the lot of Benue people has been juxtaposed and treated unclad without regard to the code of secrecy.’’
Apeh said that it was disheartening that the governor was apparently trying to shy away from accountability and to portray the party in bad light.
Latest Reality Metro recalls that Ortom had on Monday said that the party had given him red card, and that presently, he does not belong to any political party.

The Zamfara State Police Command has deployed its personnel after suspected bandits invaded some villages in the state.

Mr Kenneth Ebrimson, the Commissioner of Police in the state disclosed this to our correspondent on Thursday when he confirmed the attack.

He said a police patrol team responded swiftly to the distress call of attacks on Sikida and Gyadde villages of Gidan Goga district in Maradun Local Government Area of the state.

The police commissioner noted that the bandits fled after killing three persons, following the arrival of the security operatives.

He said the team of security personnel deployed in the areas would comb the bush in the communities with the aim of arresting the perpetrators of the attacks.

But eyewitnesses told Channels Television in an earlier interview on Wednesday that the bandits also invaded Farin Zare, Orawa, and Sabon Gari villages also in Gidan Goga district.

They claimed the attacks were carried out simultaneously in the early hours of Tuesday, while many villagers were wounded in the process.

The locals said the invaders stormed the villages on motorbikes, shooting sporadically at residents and carting away their livestock.

One of the villagers said 30 people were killed across the villages during the attacks, although the police authorities insisted that three people died.

Suspected armed bandits and cattle rustlers had killed at least 30 people when they invaded Malikawa village in the same district in May.

The repeated attacks on the communities have left residents in perpetual fear and anxiety.

The residents have called on the Federal Government to be more proactive in securing their lives and property, as well as stop the repeated killings as a result of the herdsmen-farmers clashes.

Eritrea has pulled troops back from the heavily militarized border with Ethiopia as a “gesture of reconciliation” with its giant neighbor and long-time foe, the pro-government Eritrean Press agency said on its Facebook page.
“It is imperative for all those who care about the long-term stability and economic viability of the region to do everything they can to help the two countries move beyond the senseless war that wrought so much suffering on both people,” the agency said.
NAN reports that the Eritrean–Ethiopian border conflict was a violent standoff between Eritrea and Ethiopia as part of the violence in the Horn of Africa.
This included sporadic clashes of their militaries, some of which took part in the larger Second Afar Insurgency.
The border conflict had been ongoing since the Eritrean–Ethiopian War of 1998 to 2000, and included multiple clashes with numerous casualties, such as the 2016 Tserona clashes.
Ethiopia eventually stated in 2018 that it would cede Badme to Eritrea, which effectively ended the twenty-year conflict.
The two countries formally ended the conflict at the 2018 Eritrea–Ethiopia summit on 9 July 2018, by signing a joint agreement to resume peaceful diplomatic relations.
Eritrea achieved independence from Ethiopia in 1993, following a long armed struggle.
The two countries fought again between 1998 and 2000 over the disputed territory of Badme, costing an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 lives.
Also on Thursday, Ethiopia appointed its first ambassador to Eritrea in two decades in the latest sign of rapprochement after a border war, the state-affiliated Fana news agency said.
An online report from Fana said Redwan Hussien, formerly Ethiopian ambassador to Ireland, had become Addis Ababa’s representative in Asmara.
Since signing an agreement in Asmara on July 9 to restore ties, Eritrean and Ethiopian leaders have moved swiftly to sweep away two decades of hostility since conflict erupted between the two neighbours in the Horn of Africa in 1998.
The rapprochement was triggered by the coming into office of Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in April who announced he wanted to implement a peace deal that ended the war.
Both leaders have visited each other and Eritrea’s Isaias Afwerki this week reopened his country’s embassy in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia’s national carrier Ethiopia Airlines on Wednesday made its first flight to Asmara in two decades and was greeted by dancers waving flags and flowers as families separated by the war and the ensuing hostilities made an emotional reunion. Reuters/LR News

The Federal Government has appealed to Nigerians, especially those living in flood-prone areas to stop blocking drainages to enhance the flow of water.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made the plea in a statement on Thursday by his spokesman, Laolu Akande.

“One of the things I’d want to say is that we have to change our habits in terms of blocking drainages. By and large here, if you look at the channels, they are huge,” he said when he visited Abeokuta on Wednesday.

“They have done quite a lot in terms of canalisation and drainage. But still, where you have a large amount of rain falling within a short period of time, you are likely to have flash flooding.”

Professor Osinbajo, who was on a condolence visit to the Ogun State capital, noted that while it was difficult to avoid flash flooding anywhere, the situation would have worsened if the incident occurred late at night because it would naturally cause a disaster.

He advised those living in the axis and similar areas in other states to move quickly to higher grounds when the rains are heavy, to prevent the loss of life.

The Vice President sympathised with the flood victims and those who lost their loved ones to the incident, saying the government would improve on the drainage infrastructure in the affected areas.

He said, “On the whole, the loss of lives is very unfortunate, and we commiserate as the Federal Government. But I also want to say that God had been truly gracious to us.

It could have been much worse, but for the large infrastructure here, canalisation and drainage, which helped to move the water quickly, the water has practically receded despite the surge.

“What we are looking at is how the drainage and canalisation can be enhanced. We are in discussions with His Excellency, the Governor, to see in specific ways how the Federal Government can be of assistance. We have to sit down and really look at those issues carefully.”

Osinbajo added, “Of course, we are providing immediate relief materials to support the state government; the Director General of NEMA is here, providing that immediate succour and assistance.

“On a more permanent basis, we would be working very closely with the government to see how we can assist in improving the drainage and sewage infrastructure. That’s a more substantive issue and we have to look at it carefully.”

He, however, called for more citizen awareness so as to avoid future occurrences and commended the state government for its prompt response to the incident.

The Vice President, who was received by Governor Ibikule Amosun, was taken round the affected areas, including Kuto and Isale-Igbein where at least 11 lives were lost, and several houses destroyed.

Troubled by frequent killings of Nigerians, the Nigerian Union in South Africa has called for the arrests and prosecution of killers.
The President of the Union, Mr Adetola Olubajo, blamed the incessant killings of Nigerians in South Africa on lack of prosecution of offenders by the authorities.
Olubajo said that the inability of the South African government to bring to book those perpetrating the heinous crimes against Nigerians has given the criminals free hands.
“Lack of prosecution of these criminal activities has actually embolden a lot of people to feel that they can kill Nigerians without any consequence,” he said.
He expressed concern that government’s apathy to arrest and prosecute the killers has made the situation more complex.
“People are emboldened to perpetrate the crime with impunity and without consequences, because of lack of prosecution.
“When there are no arrests, no prosecutions, criminals will have effrontery to go into crime without fear of retribution.
“What we are demanding is that whosoever commits any crime should be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.
Olubajo also urged both Nigerian and South African authorities to work together to address the situation and reduce criminal activities against Nigerians in South Africa.
He, however, called Nigerians in South Africa to be law abiding and shun criminal activity
The killing of Nigerians in South Africa had been on the increase in recent times.
The latest was the assassination of Mr Martin Ebuzoeme by unknown assailant in Yeoville, Johannesburg on July 12 .
The killing came barely 24 hours after the visit of South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa to Nigeria.
Ramaphosa had, during his visit on July 11, said that the killing of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in the country was an act of criminality, but not specifically targeted at Nigerians.
Before then, was also the killing of Mr Ozumba Tochukwu-Lawrence, by an unknown gunman at 10 Koppe, Middleburg, Mpumalanga on July 6.
Another Nigerian, Thankgod Okoro, was also reportedly shot dead in Hamburg, Florida West Rand, Johannesburg, on April 9 by the South African Police Flying Squad.
There was also the killing of Mr Clement Nwaogu a father of two, who was burnt to death by his assailants in April.
The wanton killings of Nigerians in South Africa had sparked a number of protests there.
At least 14 of the protesters were taken into custody and allegedly branded drug peddlers.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had expressed worry over the killings of Nigerians in South Africa.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that no fewer than 117 Nigerians were extra-judicially killed in South Africa between 2013 and 2018 for one flimsy reason or the other.
