The Konard Adenaeur Stiftung (KAS), a German Foundation, has pledged the continuous support of Germany to Nigeria to overcome its challenges, ensure good governance, democracy, peace and stability.
Dr. Gerhard Wahler, Head of Department, European and International cooperation of KAS, made this known in Abuja during the 15th anniversary of the organisation’s operation in Nigeria.
According to Wahler, Germany and KAS consider Nigeria as an important partner for the stability of the West African region and Africa in general, hence the need for more support and collaboration.
“Democracy, rule of law and prosperity for all, this is our vision for Nigeria, because without the rule of law, prosperity for all will become prosperity for some.
“Without prosperity, democracy will not last and without democracy, people cannot control their government.
“I consider Nigeria as a pivotal player in the region; Nigeria not only has the largest population in Western Africa but also serves as the economic hub and political anchor of Western Africa.
“The challenges in your country and region will not be easy to overcome, it will be a long process and I always stress this in my talks in Germany; there is no alternative to this path.
“ We need to join forces to create lasting perspectives for people in Western Africa.
“Peace, stability, good governance, rule of law, democracy and economic diversification are key ingredients in fostering a strong region that can provide better lives for its people,’’ Wahler said.
Wahler said that just as Germany had increased its contribution for the region in regards to security and development policy, KAS had also increased its footprints in West Africa and Nigeria.
According to him, the 15-year KAS operation in Nigeria has been evident and its activities has tripled since 2012, engaging more partners and organisations.
In her valedictory remarks, Mrs Hildegard Behrendt-Kigozi, outgoing Country Representative of KAS, Nigeria, advised Nigerian leaders to contribute to the good governance of the country so that the desired change would be achieved.
She expressed optimism that positive change was possible if every Nigerian, especially those in authority got everything right through the implementation of the right policies.
“I really look forward and I do hope that Nigeria can get everything together well.
“I am a bit afraid because of the insecurity, because of the population growth which makes it difficult for the government to care of the people.
“So many new children every year will need to go to school; so many people every year who will need to get job after graduation.
“To govern Nigeria and to give it prosperity is possible but it is difficult a job and I really do hope that it will happen.
“It will need more time; it won’t happen overnight and I really do hope that in the next five to 10 years, a lot of things would get better,’’ Behrendt-Kigozi said.
Also speaking, Mr Vladimir Kreck, the incoming KAS Country Representative to Nigeria pledged to build on the policies of Behrendt-Kigozi which is hinged on the objective of the foundation to promote democracy and good governance.
“Nigeria is a large country and Nigeria is a great country, greatness in terms of population and greatness in terms of problems.
“What I can say is that there are certain things I can’t promise. I can’t promise to change Nigeria substantially with our work at KAS; I can’t promise to increase our budget.
“But there are certain things I can promise, that we would have an open office for everyone who seeks to partner to promote democracy, the rule of law and security,’’ Kreck said. LR News

Nigeria’s current power generation has reached 7000 Mega Watts, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has said.
Fashola said this on Friday in Calabar at the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing 4th Edition Retreat for top directors, heads of units and chief executives of agencies and parastatals.
He said that although there was still more to be done, the ministry had moved forward from where it was three years ago.
“Three years ago, the story was that power generation was the main problem of Nigeria. The story was that the distribution companies were complaining that they did not have enough energy to distribute to Nigerians.
“We were distributing averagely 2,690 mega watts of electricity to Nigerians, but today, that story has changed, distribution has risen to 5,222 mega watts, an all time national high.
“Transmission has reached 7,000 while generation has reached 7000. The problem has not finished but all we can say is that we have made progress.”
The minister added that the Federal Government was constructing roads in virtually all the 36 states some of which were through collaborative efforts as well as direct interventions.
According to him, the present administration has spent over N300 billion on roads construction since coming to power three years ago.
“Before this administration, there was no housing policy but now we have one.”
Fashola commended members of staff of the ministry for their support and team work, noting that without team work, the ministry would not have been able to achieve much.
He said that the theme of the retreat which is “Goal Setting and Goal Reaching for a Focused Team,’’ was meant to reinforce the team spirit while setting out on its goals in the next 90 days.
“It is a team that wins. We will go together as a team. If we bind together, everything is possible,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Mr Louis Edozien, said that the retreat was meant to appraise the performance of the ministry in the past 90 days.
Edozien, who was represented by a Director, Mr Ahmed Abdul, added that the retreat would also afford the top management the opportunity to strategise on the plan of action for the next quarter. LR News

Dare-devil robbers drove right into a South African supermarket and made away with an Automated Teller Machine installed there.

The event happened on Wednesday.

As revealed in the social media video posted by the Intelligence Bureau SA, the robbers drive their van in reverse mode into the supermarket and apparently order shoppers and workers alike to freeze.

They jump out of the vehicle, commando style, and, brandishing deadly weapons that include what look like AK-47 rifles, drive fear into the shoppers who dive for cover.

The masked robbers make for the location of the ATM and soon bring it to view, dragging it to the waiting pickup that is parked right inside the expansive shop.

They lift it up, place it into the van and drive away. There is no security personnel is in sight.

While a respondent expresses the wish that the robbers should meet an empty cash machine, another, Alex Mothobi Malinda-Lee Lötter, says, “I hear it was just loaded with cash,” concluding that the daylight robbers must have studied the cash movement into the ATM before striking.

This makes another respondent, Xolisa Bobe, to wonder why anyone would “put money in a machine that is so easily movable.”

Drilling expert, Carl Scholtz, says, “Good luck if they think they’re getting money out of that ATM.”

The reason, he says, is because ATMs “stain all the money inside the moment they are tipped or knocked hard;” noting that if it was that easy to rob an ATM and get away, “then there would be more of those stolen money [in circulation].”

Scholtz calls them, “dumb ass idiots.”

Another respondent, Mavundla Thabethe, laments that though it took almost seven minutes for the robbers to do the operation, “police or any security (agent) was nowhere to be found,” wondering what the outcome would have been if it was terrorist attack.

IT technician, Teboho Thebe, wonders if the ATMs don’t have tracking devices; concluding that the society is doomed if they don’t.

Johannesburg resident, Jay Stash, decries the dare-devilry “of stealing a whole ATM (installed) inside a shop, concluding, “Crime has become a whole shopping experience.”

However, expert in Criminal Psychology, Nana Muller, says there is enough clear footage to use for face recognition,” warning that, “This was a well planned operation with experienced robbers;” concluding, “so, they should be on record.”

Twenty-one people were killed when their boat capsized in an area wracked by deadly attacks blamed on cattle thieves in northern Nigeria, the emergency services said on Friday.

The vessel carrying 50 passengers overturned in strong currents in a river in the Gandi district of Sokoto state around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) on Thursday, Suleiman Karim of the National Emergency Management Agency  told AFP.

“Rescue teams recovered the bodies of 17 women and four children on board the overloaded boat which capsized due to strong waves,” he said.

He said the other 29 passengers were lucky to make it to the shore.

The passengers were heading to Garin Kare village on the other side of the river to check on their homes, which they deserted following deadly raids last month by suspected cattle thieves on neighbouring villages.

Thousands of the villagers fled to a makeshift camp in Gandi town after the bandits’ attack, in which 32 people were killed and dozens of homes burnt.

Boat capsizes are common in Nigeria due to overcrowding and the lack of maintenance for vessels, particularly during the annual rainy season.

Last month, 22 traders were killed after their boat capsized in high winds in the Isa district of Sokoto state following a heavy downpour.

Sen. Jeff Woodburn

A Democratic Senator Jeff Woodburn has been arrested for domestic violence charges after he allegedly bit a woman on multiple occasions and forced his way into her locked home.
The New Hampshire lawmaker from Whitefield, U.S., was charged with simple assault, domestic violence and criminal mischief after the state attorney general’s office said he allegedly slapped a woman, punched her in the stomach, bit her hand, and on another occasion, bit her forearm.
The incidents are said to have taken place this year and last year.
Woodburn, the state Senate minority leader, defended himself Thursday in a statement.
“This afternoon, I learned that a warrant had been issued for my arrest.
“I voluntarily responded to the police station, cooperated with law enforcement during the booking process, and was released.
“I intend to fully address and defend against these charges in court,” he said.
The New Hampshire Democratic Party has urged Woodburn to resign, as did the state’s Democratic congressional delegation and members of the state Senate Democratic Caucus.
“The New Hampshire Democratic Party stands firm in our belief that any form of sexual harassment, sexual assault, or domestic violence is completely unacceptable behavior for anyone, let alone our public officials who should all be held to a higher standard,” said State Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley.
Republican Gov. Chris Sununu tweeted that the allegations were “morally reprehensible,” and also said Woodburn should step down.
Woodburn is set to be arraigned on August 20.
