Sango/Abeokuta Express Road

Residents have lamented the deplorable state of the Sango /Abeokuta expressway noting that it has led to a constant gridlock and unnecessary delays for commuters trying to reach their destination.

Narrating their ordeal to Latest Reality Metro, some of the residents and road users in the area complained that the situation of the roads is worse off during the rainy season which always leads to a flood, causing commuters to remain held up in the gridlock for several hours.

They, therefore, called on the Federal Government to urgently commence repairs before another raining season begins.

Some community leaders also noted that the problem is being compounded by the lack of proper drainage systems on the expressway.

Speaking to the Federal Director of Works in Abeokuta, Mr Alex Mazoya, in telephone interview, he confirmed the situation noting that the ministry is fully aware.

He, however, assured them that repair works will commence on the roads as soon as funds are available.

Ex-DSS Director, Mr. Mike Ejiofor

A former Director of the Department of State Security (DSS), Mr Mike Ejiofor has explained why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) cannot beam its anti-corruption searchlight on the financial details of the DSS.

He said this on Friday when he appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s programme, State of the Nation.

“You have no powers conferred on you to investigate the spending of the State Security Service. And if he (Magu) has a problem, he should have gone to the sitting DG (Daura) to say I have a problem with your former DG,” he said.

Ejiofor’s comments come hours after the Senate had quizzed EFCC’s Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu, and Director-General of SSS, Mr Lawal Daura.

Both men were invited to explain the roles played by their operatives when EFCC attempted to arrest a former DSS boss, Mr Ita Ekpenyong.

Prior to the commencement of the sitting, the senator had ordered journalists out of the room from coverage.

The development, according to Ejiofor, is a normal one as it borders on national security.

He said, “That is the proper thing to do. In such sittings you don’t expect the press or members of the public to begin to listen to some issues that are capable of jeorpardising national security interest.

“You can agree with me that both the EFCC Chairman and the DG, SSS agreed that the sitting should be held in camera instead of allowing the press to witness it.

“That is my worry, we are talking about security, funding of security form this whole episode. There are certain things that should come to the public domain.”

He, however, reiterated the need for an enhanced synergy between the relevant security agencies in fighting crimes rather than acrimony.

The panel, chaired by Senator Emmanuel Paulker, had conducted its investigative hearings behind closed doors but the House of Representatives conducted the same probe on a live broadcast.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Francis Alimikhena, after his opening remarks at the hearing on EFCC/DSS clash, asked if any of the heads of the agencies in attendance had any observations or questions.

Ekpeyong, who served as the head of the DSS from 2010 to 2015, had been invited by the EFCC for his alleged role in the arms scam involving a former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd.), and other service chiefs who have since been arraigned.

While admitting Magu’s view that nobody is above the law, Ejiofor stated that the anti-graft agency, however, ought to follow some ‘due process’ in its planned arrest.

He also advocated ‘special’ protection for both serving and former heads of the DSS owing to them being in possession of classified information.

“Don’t also forget that this man, the former DG and previous DGs, not this one, in particular, are custodians of very vital information and the need some protection, even out of office.

“So I don’t see how the Chairman of EFCC or EFCC on its own can go and obtain a warrant. You cannot put something or nothing, that has been my position,” he said.

NNPC GMD. Dr. Maikanti Baru

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has been  blamed again for holding up  the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting  scheduled for Friday, as it failed to remit due revenue into the pool.
The meeting will now take place today.

One of the state Commissioners for Finance, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that for the second time, the NNPC was late in remitting funds into the Federation Account.

“NNPC is the major cause of all these things. It has not brought in money just like last month.

“Last month, the state governors insisted that the NNPC must bring in money before it later brought out N30 billion from Excess Crude Account (ECA) before the last FAAC could hold.

”Again this month, the CBN and Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) said they have not received component statement from NNPC.

”’This  indicates that NNPC had not paid money into the Federation Account. Without that money we have to wait till tomorrow for FAAC meeting to hold.

“If the component statement is sent from NNPC,  it will take about six hours before the stakeholders can go through it” the commissioner said.

President Muhammadu Buhari last month urged all state governors to utilise the balance of 50 per cent Paris Club refund to settle unpaid salaries owed workers before Christmas.

To remove any hitches,  he  directed the CBN, Ministry of Finance, and the Budget Office of the Federation to work out how the outstanding fund would be paid before 2017 ends.

The payment began in December 2016  with the  release of about N522.74 billion to all 36 states in the first tranche of the Paris Club refund.

The federal government later in July 2017,  released N243.8 billion as second tranche.

The funds were released following protests by states against over deductions for external debt service between 1995 and 2002.

Osayomore Joseph

Having spent one month in kidnappers cell, Edo based musician, Osayomore Joseph, has narrated his experience and said he paid a huge ransom.
“I paid huge ransom before I was released by my abductors after 30 days in captivity,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Benin.
Osayomore was kidnapped on Oct. 4 and eventually released to his family on November 4.
The popular musician said that his wife was shot by his abductors before they zoomed-off with him into a forest, abutting a creek, after travelling on the high sea.
He said the trauma he suffered during his 30-day abduction was not an experience he wanted to remember.
He said that he had packaged his experience in his new album titled “30 days and 30 nights in the evil forest” set to be launched today 16 December.
According to him, I was dragged through the forest close to Gelegele and taken in a boat to a creek.
“I have never stepped into a boat before. The speed boat on the high sea is enough to give me high blood pressure.
“The kidnappers called themselves forest soldiers. Those who came to kidnap me did not know me.
“It was when I got to the creek that some learned ones started singing my old songs. They did not know that I started fighting before they were born.
“They may have overestimated me that I am very rich. They collected money from me.
“I will not mention the amount, but it is colossal. That will not deter me from doing what I know how to do best.
“I did not know I will come back alive. I later know I will not die there when they started asking for money.
“The ransom was collected on the high sea. They called the boat that brought the ransom money Freedom Boat. I was on an Evil Boat
“After they brought the bags containing huge sums of money, the kidnappers checked them and that was how I came back.”
