Senator Stella Oduah

Senator Stella Oduah, the lawmaker representing Anambra North at the Senate, says she will sustain the fight against poverty in her constituency.
Oduah gave the assurance when she featured on News Agency of Nigeria Forum in Abuja.

She said that it was the desire to uplift the living standard of her constituents that made her venture into politics, and assured that she would do her best to ensure that the desire was accomplished.

She said: “My people are very poor. If you know how Anambra state is structured and you understand the culture of my people, you will appreciate why they are where they are.

“We live along the bank of the River Niger; we are an accommodating people who are easily satisfied and we are essentially farmers and fishermen.
“Give us our fish, give us our yam and cassava and we will be fine; but, time has eroded all that and the needs of the people have gone beyond that.

“So, to mainstream our needs, I went into politics and during campaign, I went to literally every town and village in my zone.
“One of the reasons why I did that and I am still doing that is to know that if I am going to be their mouthpiece, I should know how they live.

“I should feel their pulse and I should speak their language in every ramification.
“So, while touring, I saw poverty, I shook hands with poverty and so, if you tell me now to draw poverty I can give you a very clear picture.’’

The lawmaker added that the situation was so bad that many of her constituents lived in hopelessness, with no electricity, no access to school, hospital and potable water, among other things.
She said that unless something was done to bring an end to the plight of the people, there would be no future, particularly for the youth of the area.

According to her, children in my constituency travel some distance to go to school or sit under trees to get education in order to get out of poverty.
Oduah said she had embarked on many projects to impact positively on the people in various communities in the area.

She said: “My heart bleeds for the people and anything I do for them is not too much. I am not motivated to be of assistance because I am a politician but because it is needful.

“I am doing several things to alleviate their suffering. We have a scholarship scheme which works in two phases.
“One takes into cognisance those who are not academically blessed but can learn some trades that will better their lot. Some of them are farming, including fish farming.

“So far, we have some in several universities and skill acquisition centres and we are going to do more.
“Our target for this year is 1,000 beneficiaries and we are hoping that before the year runs out we will have them in the various institutions.”

She added that there were also those who ever academically inclined and were also benefiting from her scholarship programme.

Oduah said: “We also have another group which is women. I tell people that until and unless we start recognising the importance of women, we really cannot grow.

“Women, particularly at the grassroots, ensure that our rural economy improves. They go to farm and do literally everything.

“In fact, for them it is more important that their children go to school than it is for the men.
“So for this segment of the society not to be recognised or encouraged, beats my imagination. I don’t understand the male conspiracy in that regard.’’

Oduah said that her focus was on human capital development, infrastructural development and women empowerment in her constituency.

Nigeria’s power plant, Egbin Power Station Plc, said on Saturday that it recorded 827-day incident free operations.

A statement issued in Lagos by the Chairman of the station, Kola Adesina, said the safety standards and procedures at Egbin Power station helped the nation’s largest power plant record incident free operations.

Adesina said the power plant operated in line with globally acclaimed standards for Health, Safety, Security and the Environment and required staff and stakeholders to abide by its zero tolerance policy on safety infractions.

He said: “Since we took over the plant in 2013, we have continued to enhance the plant’s HSSE profile through investments in safety equipment and training.

“For us at Egbin, ensuring safety at all cost is a non-negotiable policy and we are delighted with the progress we have made in this regard.

“It gives us the impetus to sustain ongoing transformation and preparation for future expansion of the plant.’’

Adesina said Egbin’s safety records had been severally commended by various post-privatisation monitoring team and other regulatory agencies following inspection visits.

He said: “At Egbin, every staff is a Safety Ambassador. We demand the same level of commitment from all our partners and stakeholders and remain confident that HSSE issues will always be paramount in our operations.”

Adesina, who stressed the need for collaboration across the sector’s value chain, said such collaboration would help operators and regulators to effectively address the challenges of the power sector.

He said: “What we need right now is generation, transmission and distribution working together to achieve the ultimate goal of improved power supply.

“We have witnessed continuing improvement across the value chain and we need to keep up the momentum and close our ranks where we have gaps to drive better power supply.’’

Adesina said issues bordering on un-utilised energy, load shedding and optimised load picking could be managed by operators to ensure the system maintained a balance that enhanced productivity and sustainability.

He said: “We should all work as partners in the power sector as the nation is counting on us to make the system work.

“At Egbin, we remain committed to spearheading intra and inter sectoral collaborative efforts to move the power sector ahead.

“This will require the support of the government, regulators, operators, local and foreign investors, electricity consumers and civil societies.’’

Adesina said that an analysis of operations across the value chain clearly revealed the need for the sector to address and correct the price differential between the actual cost of electricity and current price regimes.

He said: “Another important factor that is responsible for the high price of electricity is the lack of conservation.

“It is imperative for the sector to embark on sustained advocacy and awareness campaigns that will encourage people to embrace conservation and shun energy theft as well as illegal connections.”

The chairman commended the Ministry of Power, regulators and operators for on-going deliberations aimed at moving the sector forward.

He, however, acknowledged government’s ongoing massive investments to shore up transmission and ensure that power generated gets to the end-users.

Adeshina equally acknowledged the ongoing strengthening of the distribution network to allow for seamless delivery of power to all electricity consumers.

According to him, all hands must be on deck to ensure regular power supply to Nigerians.

He added: “I have no doubt that the power sector will record fast paced improvement in our quest for sustainable power with more investments which can only be driven by the right policies, pricing and personnel.’’

The Police Service Commission has said that it cannot probe the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for allegedly pocketing N10 billion monthly as payment for private security services rendered by the police to corporate organisations and Very Important Persons.

The PSC is in charge of promotion and discipline of officers in the Nigeria Police Force.
However, the PSC’s Spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, said the IG was not under the commission’s supervision by virtue of the Act establishing the commission.

He stated that by law, the commission could discipline or probe policemen from the rank of constable to Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

So, the commission cannot investigate or discipline the IG,” Ani said.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was not investigating the Inspector-General of Police

A senior EFCC official told one of our correspondents that the anti-graft agency had no reason yet to probe Idris.

The source added, “We are currently not probing the IG and as it is, there is no reason to probe him.”

It was learnt from the EFCC official that no petition had been sent to the EFCC regarding the police boss as of Friday.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Isah Misau, had recently accused Idris of extorting money, ranging from N10 million to N15 million, from commissioners of police, state mobile commanders and special protection unit commanders, for favourable postings.

Misau had also alleged that the police boss made N10 billion monthly from oil companies and other private individuals who enjoy special protection from the security agency.

Misau had said the level of corruption being perpetrated by the current Inspector-General of Police and the Chairman, Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro (retd.), was so alarming and capable of undermining the anti-corruption stance of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Misau had said, “While the Police Service Commission could not deny the bribery allegation, information reaching me indicates that even the transfers of Commissioners of Police, State Mobile Commanders and SPU Commanders are also allegedly riddled in corruption.

“Some Commissioners of Police and State Mobile Commanders pay between N10 million to N15 miilion to get postings. There is also the allegation that more than 50,000 policemen are attached to oil companies, banks and private individuals with payments made to the police authorities. These people pay as much as N10 billion
monthly. They are, however, unaccounted for.”
