The female hostel in the Jos campus of the Plateau State Polytechnic was on Monday completely burnt down by fire.

The fire, which started around 8.30am, raged on till 11.44am, throwing the entire school into confusion as students and staffers scurried to safety with some bold students making frantic but fruitless efforts to quench the inferno.

The News Agency of Nigeria, however, reports that no life was lost in the fire that gutted everything in the hostel.

“Many students had left for lectures when the fire started; no one was around to remove anything from the burning hostel,” Yusuf Ade, a security man, told NAN.

NAN also reports that the fire service personnel arrived the scene around 11.20 when the hostel had been brought down.

Dauda Gyemang, the Rector of the institution, who described the incident as “shocking”, attributed it to a gas explosion which occurred “at about 8.30am.”

Gyemang added: “We thank God that no life was lost in the inferno, but nothing was rescued.”
He said that the incident was “a great loss” to the institution.

He said: “We shall move the students to another place because the building is completely burnt down. It is very devastating.”

The Rector wondered why the students were keeping cooking gas in the hostel, saying that it was against the school’s regulations.

He said: “The problem here is that students do not adhere to the institution’s regulations; they are not supposed to be cooking in the hostels.”

Gyemang said that the burnt building would be rehabilitated “in no distant time”, and urged the students to remain calm.

The hostel’s Representative, Christiana Azi, told NAN that students lost everything “including original copies of their credentials, clothes, food stuffs and other valuables”.

Azi added: “The incident is shocking and devastating. It will be very difficult to recover from it.”

NIS CG Muhammad Babandede

The Nigeria Immigration Service has banned cash payments for passport processing as part of efforts to eliminate corruption at all passport offices nationwide.

The NIS spokesperson, Sunday James, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.

James said the Comptroller General of the NIS, Muhammad Babandede, has directed that henceforth all payments for passport processing must be done online and through designated banks‎.

He said that the NIS boss had, in a circular, directed‎ all passport control officers not to allow cash payments in any of the passport premises.

James said: “All payments in respect to passport processing are to be done by applicants through banks to generate application ID and reference number on the NIS portal and not through an individual or touts.”

According to him, the NIS CG has also ordered an‎ investigation into allegations of passport racketeering at some passport offices in Lagos with a view to sanitising the system.

James therefore urged passport applicants to ensure that all categories of Nigerian passports fees were done online.

He said: “Passport applicants are therefore strongly advised to visit the NIS website www.immigration.gov.ng to confirm the approved fees for all categories of Nigerian Passports and age groups before making payments.”

He said that the management of all passport offices have been directed to paste all information required at the premises to guide applicants in line with the executive orders.

He urged Nigerians to direct any complaint or enquiries to 07080607900 and the email address nis.servicom@nigeriaimmigration.gov.ng.

The spokesperson advised applicants against patronising touts or agents‎ in order to ensure efficient service delivery.

The NIS boss had vowed to stamp out corruption in the operations of the NIS as part of efforts to reposition the Service and ensure efficient service delivery.
