The Federal Government has said that  two illegal mining companies- Solid Unit Limited and Geotess Nigeria Limited that were shut down in Zurak, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State last month, had illegally taken out minerals worth over N100 billion, in the past few years they have been involved in illegal activities in the area.

The Minister of Mines and steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, disclosed this during a meeting with staff of the ministry in Abuja recently.

Sixteen Chinese nationals and eight Nigerians involved in massive illegal mining were arrested in Zurak, on August 15 at the wake of the shutting down of the two companies on the orders of the National Security Adviser, Major-Gen Babagana Monguno (rtd), and the Minister when the duo visited some illegal mining sites in the richly endowed lead/zinc belt.

The Chairman of Solid Unit Limited, Alhaji Usman Abubakar (aka Dan China), who is regarded as the most notorious illegal miner in the State was also declared wanted by the NSA, who ordered all security agencies to arrest him for acts seen as economic sabotage.

Dr Fayemi, in the meeting attended by all cadre of the workers in the ministry, said the huge scale of  illegal mining by the two companies in Wase was tantamount to economic terrorism, adding that government was determined to confront anyone or group that are out to sabotage the economy through illegal mining and other means.

He said the scale of illegal mining perpetrated by the two blacklisted companies and their foreign collaborators was humongous, stressing that they used very sophisticated equipment, including a tunnel with rail track and other heavy machines for their illegal operations.

He said the arrested Nigerians have been in active connivance with foreigners to carry out massive illegal mining in the state thereby depriving the country of revenue.

Fayemi lamented: “Their unwholesome activities have also led to environmental degradation and abandoned mine pits.”

He said the leadership of the ministry carried out the operation that led to the closure of the illegal mining companies/sites and the arrest in a discreet manner, because of the massive network of collaborators and informants at the disposal of the companies.

“We didn’t want to leave anything to chance, so it was done discreetly”, he said, adding that it was a successful operation, which according to him had also restored sanity to the area, which had been under the siege of illegal miners and criminal elements for some years.

The arrested Nigerians and their foreign collaborators, according to him, have been handed over to the newly inaugurated Mines Division of the Nigerian Police for prosecution.

In response to a question by one of the workers, Dr Fayemi said the ministry would adopt its own whistle blowing arrangement in order to encourage more information on illegal mining activities in the sector.

The Minister, however, added that the ministry would continue to guide and provide both technical and financial supports genuine artisanal and small scale miners, who abide by the rules and regulations guiding the sector.

Zurak is a key location of substantial mineral deposits notably lead, zinc, copper, tin, wolframite, tantalite and other base metals.

Over time, the range of illegal mining activities have been recorded around the area leading to the wanton loss of revenue, minable land and social displacement of the rural communities.

Dr Babangida Aliyu

Dr Babangida Aliyu, the immediate past governor of Niger state, has voiced his support for monitoring of the social media by the military to ensure security and unity of the nation.

Aliyu made the remark in Minna on Sunday during a media chat with newsmen.
He said it was not bad if the Federal Government decides to monitor the social media through the military.

He said: “I support monitoring of the social media by the security agencies to control negative stories that can influence the lives of unsuspecting subscribers to do the wrong thing they never intended to do.

“You cannot say negative things about a person or an institution especially when they are false without being challenged.

“Some governments close the social media or part of it when they are in crisis in order to save their countries from collapse because of people who may not understand the use of social media.’’

Aliyu noted that though the social media was a source for dissemination of  both positive and negative information, “we should be careful not to use it wrongly to the detriment of the society”.

He added: “The security agencies may be right in monitoring the social media, but we should be watchful so that the security agencies will not go to the extreme of infringing on people’s right.’’

The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, recently told newsmen that the activities of Nigerians on the social media were being monitored for hate speech, anti-government and anti-security information.

He said that the move to monitor social media became necessary in the light of dissemination of false information capable of jeopardising the unity of the country.

Aliyu was the governor of Niger from May 2007 to May 2015.

Kim Jong-Un

North Korea said on Sunday it has developed a more advanced nuclear weapon that has “great destructive power” as leader Kim Jong-Un inspected a hydrogen bomb at the Nuclear Weapons Institute.
The bomb can be loaded on a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

The hydrogen bomb’s power is adjustable to hundreds of kilotons and can be detonated at high altitudes, with its indigenously produced components allowing the country to build as many nuclear weapons as it wants, the North’s official KCNA news agency said.

Yonhap, owned by South Korea, said the institute has succeeded in developing a “more developed nuke”, bringing about a “signal turn” in the country’s nuclear weaponization, according to the report.

Scientists “further upgraded its technical performance at a higher ultra-modern level on the basis of precious successes made in the first H-bomb test,” the KCNA said.
The H-bomb can be detonated even at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP attacks, it added.

In January 2016, North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test, which Pyongyang claimed to be a successful test of a hydrogen bomb.

Outside experts said it appeared to be a test of a boosted fission weapon, rather than an H-bomb.
North Korea has carried out five nuclear tests since 2006, including two last year.

It is seeking to develop a nuclear weapon small enough to be mounted on an ICBM.
The announcement came amid heightened tensions after North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan last week.

In July, North Korea tested two ICBMs, which analysts say could put much of the US mainland within range, including Los Angeles and Chicago.
