Suspects

The Nigeria Police Force, Oyo state command, has paraded 15 men arrested for allegedly being a member of a notorious robbery gang terrorising the state before their recent arrest by officials of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Among those paraded is a 28-year old Naval officer, Jimoh Adesoye, a soldier and twin brothers, Vanguard reports.

Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, during the parade, said the Naval officer was arrested with 12 members of his gang.
He said: “Six of the suspects were arrested in their criminal hideout at Ilasa area, Ogbomoso. This led to the arrest of other members of the gang at various locations.

“The lance corporal often used his position and uniform to transport vehicles snatched by the gang and helped dispose of the stolen vehicles.

‘’The gang, which is also on the wanted list of SARS in Lagos and Kwara states, was responsible for the spate of armed robbery and car snatching along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway, Oyo State, Lagos, Kwara and other states in the South-West.

”Six of the suspects were initially arrested at their hideout in the Ilasa area of Ogbomoso by SARS unit, Ogbomoso, following credible intelligence by the command’s strategic partners."

The suspects are Lateef Isa, 25; Taiwo Yekini, 23; Kehinde Yekini, 23; Tunji Ismail, 23; Adeyemo Babajide 23; Saka Jamiu, 20; Akin Akingbade 35; Mudashiru Abdullahi, 29; Rasheed Adeniran, 26; Lukman Jimoh, 35; Dauda Lamidi, 24; and Waheed Ganiyu, 30.

Among exhibits recovered from the gang were one pump-action rifle, seven live cartridges, four cars, motorcycles and stolen home appliances.

The naval officer, who confessed to the crime during the parade, said: “I am a seaman in the Nigerian Navy. I told one of my friends that I needed a car and he introduced me to these people. Although I have my personal car that I use, I wanted to change it and my friend introduced me to them.

“I have bought more than two cars from the gang, but I later got to know that the cars were stolen. I know it is not right for me to buy such cars, I plead with the command to have mercy on me.”

Also paraded were a soldier, Azeez Olaide, 22; and a former soldier, Ibrahim Lawal, 22; for their involvement with a criminal gang that specialised in kidnapping and molesting their female victims.

Olaide was reportedly a member of the 202 battalion, Bama, Maiduguri, while Lawal deserted the Nigerian Army Depot, Zaria in 2014.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that a suspected drug baron and a leader of an armed robbery gang identified as Henry Samuel, has been arrested by officials of the police command in Bayelsa state.

Asinim Butswat, the command's public relations officer stated that efforts had been intensified to arrest other gang members, conclude investigation and arraign them.

The love for security makes us to respectively took the footsteps of our beloved Dads in a different outfit, The Nigeria Police Force, with the spirit of fighting crime with the whole of our heart and strength being barrack boys, as copied from them.

Our diligence, agility, transparency, honesty and intelligence mindset makes people to hate us, as we’re into “doing good to good people and doing bad to bad people”. But we keep struggling in making them mute. Now your enemies have succeeded in killing you, at the same area you wedded.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu spent Thursday night in Benin Prison along with 4 PDP chiefs

A former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate in Edo, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the State chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, spent Thursday night in Benin Prison, after failing to meet their bail conditions, as given by the Federal High Court.

The two spent the night at Benin Prisons alongside the other defendants, a former Deputy Governor of the state, Mr, Lucky Imasuen, a former member of the House of Representatives, Tony Azegbemi and Efe Anthony.

An officer of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) who pleaded anonymity disclosed this on Friday.
The source who was on night duty at Benin Prisons on Thursday, said the five accused were kept in custody because they failed to meet with the bail conditions as at the time of close of work on Thursday.

Ize-Iyamu and others were arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Benin on Thursday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on eight count charge of laundering the sum of N700 million.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), had reported that the five accused were granted bail of N10 million each, with sureties of like sum.

The Judge ordered that the sureties, who must not be below grade level 16, must be home owners, with Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) that should be deposited with the court’s deputy registrar.

Justice P.I Adjokwu ordered that all the accused be remanded in custody pending when they meet their applications for bail.

The Judge gave the order after rejecting a plea by counsel to Ize-Iyamu, Mr Charles Edosomwan, that they should be kept in the custody of the EFCC.

The case was subsequently adjourned till July 4, 2018.

NAN reports that the EFCC had arraigned the defendants on an eight-count charge of laundering the sum of N700million.

The EFCC alleged that the defendants were arraigned for receiving N700 Million prior to the 2015 general elections from former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The money was part of the $115 million that Diezani pilfered from the treasury.

The commission said the offence contravened Section 15(2) (d)of the Money Laundering (Prohibited) Act 2011(as amended by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) punishable under section 15(3) of same Act. LR News

F-35A Lightning II aircraft receive fuel from a KC-10 Extender from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., July 13, 2015, during a flight from England to the U.S.

In an attempt to strengthen its capability to wade off any nuclear threat from perceived enemies including Russia and North Korea, the U.S. Air Force will be incorporating the B61 Mod 12 nuclear weapon into the F-35 this year.
This is part of a long-range plan to deploy a nuclear-armed, dual-capable F-35 able to give commanders a wider envelope of precision nuclear attack options.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration’s Nuclear Posture Review, released earlier this year had stated that a nuclear-armed F-35 would be fundamental to deterring Russia.
“We are committed to upgrading DCA with the nuclear-capable F-35 aircraft.
“We will work with NATO to best ensure, and improve where needed, the readiness, survivability, and operational effectiveness of DCA based in Europe,” the Nuclear Posture Review states.
Since it was first produced in the late 1960s, the B61 has been the only remaining nuclear free-fall bomb in the U.S. arsenal.
But now the bombs are being remanufactured to the B61-12 standard which would offer an improved navigation system for increased accuracy and a feature that gives control over the explosive yield.
In a move to further increase precision nuclear attack options, the air force will start integrating B61 Mod 12 nuclear weapons into F-35s this year.
As it stands, the F-35 is able to carry 1587 kilograms of weapons while in stealth mode and 8164 kilograms while flying uncontested, although it’s not yet clear exactly how the nuclear weapon might integrate onto the platform.
While the F-35 isn’t scheduled to carry the B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb until the early 2020s, an Air Force spokeswoman Maj. Emily Grabowski said the first steps were underway.
“Detailed risk reduction activities have been completed ensuring the F-35A is fully compatible with the B61-12 weapon.
“Planning for Block 4 nuclear certification efforts have begun in anticipation of initial B61-12 integration on the F-35A this year,” Grabowski told Warrior Maven.
Using six-month increments between April 2019 to October 2024, the Block 4 F-35 will undergo more than 50 technical adjustments to ensure it’s ready.
Unlike a bomber such as a B-2, F-35s offer speed, maneuverability, long-range sensors and lower-altitude flight.
These factors would ensure a nuclear-capable F-35 would pose new threats to a potential adversary.
The B61 Mod 12 has also been engineered with a special “Tail Subassembly” to give the weapon a higher level of GPS accuracy to aid with precision targeting. LR News

An Apple iPhone X smartphone: Samsung ordered to pay Apple for design theft

A US federal court jury has ordered Samsung to pay Apple $533 million for copying iPhone design features in a patent case dating back seven years.
Jurors tacked on an additional $5 million in damages for a pair of patented functions. The award appeared to be a bit of a victory for Apple, which had argued in court that design was essential to the iPhone.
The case was keenly watched as a precedent for whether design is so important that it could actually be considered the “article of design” even in a product as complex as a smartphone.
“We don’t think it is supported by the evidence,” Samsung attorney John Quinn told US District Court Judge Lucy Koh after the verdict was read in her courtroom in Silicon Valley on Thursday.
“We have every concern about the determinations about the article of manufacture.”
Quinn declined an offer by the judge to send jurors back for further deliberation, saying Samsung would pursue post-trial motions to address its concerns about the verdict.
Juror Christine Calderon said the panel agreed that one of the design patents — the grid of colored icons — did represent the whole phone, while the other two at issue in the trial were seen as the display assembly that gave the iPhone its look.
She compared it to the Mona Lisa: “you use the paint, but it is not the article of manufacture.”
“I had to really think about it,” the 26-year-old Calderon, a technical writer, said after Koh dismissed the jury.
“We kind of felt like we ended up at a happy medium.”
The case had been sent back to the district court following a Supreme Court decision to revisit an earlier $400 million damage award.
Apple reasoned in court that design was so integral to the iPhone that it was the “article of manufacture” and worth all the money Samsung made by copying the features.
The lower figure sought by the South Korean consumer electronics titan would have involved treating the design features as components.
The jury had been asked to determine whether design features at issue in the case are worth all profit made from Samsung smartphones that copied them — or whether those features are worth just a fraction because they are components.
Apple argued in court that the iPhone was a “bet-the-company” project at Apple and that design is as much the “article of manufacture” as the device itself.
The three design patents in the case apply to the shape of the iPhone’s black screen with rounded edges and a bezel, and the rows of colorful icons displayed.
Samsung no longer sells the smartphone models at issue in the case.
Two utility patents also involved apply to “bounce-back” and “tap-to-zoom” functions.
An original trial finding that Samsung violated Apple patents preceded a lengthy appellate dueling over whether design features such as rounded edges are worth all the money made from a phone. LR News

Deadly disease, Ebola, is spreading in Democratic Republic of Congo as a Catholic priest has been quarantined after being infected with the virus.
He was infected in the town of Mbandaka, medical sources said Thursday.
“We have quarantined a priest from the diocese of Mbandaka-Bikoro who tested positive” for the Ebola virus, a medical source told AFP on condition of anonymity. Religious authorities could not be immediately contacted.
DRC health officials launched a small, targeted vaccination campaign this week to help rein in the latest Ebola outbreak in the country, which so far has claimed 27 lives.
Kinshasa announced on May 8 that there had been cases of the notorious haemorrhagic fever in a remote northwestern district called Bikoro.
Last Thursday, the first case was reported in a city — Mbandaka, a transport hub located on the Congo River.
According to a World Health Organization count, 58 cases have been identified since early April. It was not possible to establish on Thursday whether the priest was among them.
Meanwhile, UNICEF said Thursday it was committed to helping schools and children in the fight against the spread of the virus.
The charity’s DRC representative Gianfranco Rotigliano told AFP if a student becomes infected, he or she would be promptly taken care of.
Following a visit to schools in Bikoro, Rotigliano said: “I spoke with the schoolchildren, and they know the basic rules including washing their hands regularly, and not shaking hands.”
Ebola spreads through contact with bodily fluids and is both highly infectious and extremely lethal.
In Mbandaka, several families have installed buckets of water and soap at the entrance of the house for hand-washing, an AFP correspondent said.
“I asked my children to be careful not to shake hands with people and stop playing with their friends in games that would cause contact between them,” Claude, a father of several children, told AFP.
