Senator Godswill Akpabio has formally defected to the national ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at a mega rally held at the Ikot Ekpene township stadium on Wednesday.
No fewer than 30 APC’s senators and members of National Working Committee (NWC) were on hand to receive the ex-senate minority leader, Akpabio.
The senate Majority leader, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, who introduced his colleagues spoke on Akpabio whom he described as a nationalist and patriot who believes in Nigeria’s unity.
He said: `This defection surpasses all other defections.
“This is a defection that has shaken the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“They followed Akpabio everywhere to prevent him from defecting but he ignored them.’’
He said Akpabio is a nationalist who believes in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
55-year-old Akpabio, is a lawyer and politician who was also Governor of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria from May 29, 2007 to May 29, 2015.
In 2002, he was appointed Honourable Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources by the then Governor Obong Victor Attah in Akwa Ibom State.

The President of the Senate DR Bukola Saraki has said that the 8th Senate was ready to reconvene to consider the N242 INEC budget currently pending before it.
Saraki disclosed this during a World Press Conference on Wednesday on the aftermath of the siege on the national Assembly by operatives of the DSS.
Reacting to questions from newsmen after the official briefing, Saraki said that the National Assembly was committed to the smooth running of the government and would not do anything that will negatively affect the operations of government.
He argued that the Senate in recognition of the importance of the INEC budget, had scheduled a meeting with the leadership of the Commission on Tuesday but the planned meeting was botched by the siege on the National Assembly.
Saraki however knocked the executive for failing to bring the budget since January knowing fully that there would be an election in 2019.
Saraki briefing newsmen at National Assembly foyer

“We want to reassure Nigerians that, on our part, we remain committed to working for a country governed by the rule of law. Our desire is to have a society where there will be equity and justice, not oppression.
“We stand committed to doing our utmost as lawmakers to ensure that the responsibility and functionality of governance are met. Although we are on annual break, we are daily reviewing the situation and are alive to the responsibility to take action as necessary.
“Unfortunately, yesterday’s shutdown prevented us from meeting with INEC, as scheduled, to address their request. We will continue to do all to ensure a smooth and successful 2019 election.
“In the spirit of that we also appeal to Mr. President to sign the new 2018 Electoral Act Amendment Bill in line with his recommendations, which has been sent for his assent.
As at the time of this report, the National Assembly was already meeting with the INEC leadership over the Budget.
Speaking during the question and answer session, Saraki said that the leadership of the Senate would be meeting with the INEC leadership over the budget.
I do not understand how when we go on our recess there would be a government shutdown. We were to adjourn on a Thursday but we adjourned on a Tuesday, that is two sitting days.
Before we adjourned we realized that the electoral Bill had not been passed and we decided to wait, take the electoral bill and pass it.
The issue of the INEC request: it is amazing, is it the day that we were leaving that INEC realized that they will present their budget.
They had January, February, March, April, May and June, nothing came from the executive to say they needed money for INEC until July when we were leaving.
Since we went on recess, both myself and speaker have been in touch with the chairman of INEC to tell us what the issues are.
We will do all that is necessary and I have said, it has not even gone to the committee yet, it was only read on the floor, but if it needs us coming back, with the support of our members, we will do that.
That was the plan yesterday but the conditions were not conducive for us to hold the meeting.
Even today as were coming in, myself, Speaker and the leadership said that since we are here, we have already sent for the INEC Chairman to come so that we can hold the meeting.
If after discussion with the INEC Chairman there is need for us to reconvene so that we can send it to committee, we would so that. We want a free and credible election.
What we don’t like is when the wrong message is being sent out, the Executive knew from last year that there would be election, why was it not included in the 2018 Budget.
Even after the 2018 Budget was sent, they had December to June to send the INEC Budget and it was not sent. So to say today that it is the National Assembly that does not want election is not true. I want to reassure you on that,” he said.
He assured that if the outcome of the meeting would require the Senate to reconvene, he would not hesitate to reconvene the senate to pass the budget.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen the bank accounts of the Benue State government domiciled in three banks.

Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor, Mr Terver Akase, confirmed this to Channels Television in an interview on Wednesday.

Akase condemned the action by the EFCC, saying Governor Samuel Ortom would speak on the matter today in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

Channels Television gathered that the freezing of the accounts by the anti-graft agency was a result of investigations which indicated alleged abuse of Benue State’s security funds.

There were concerns that if the accounts remain frozen, the state government might find it difficult to meet its financial obligations, especially the payment of salaries to workers in the state.

However, the state government described the action of the EFCC as part of alleged plots to frustrate its efforts after Governor Ortom left the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor had defected from the ruling party to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on July 25, after some youths prevented him from attending a reconciliatory meeting convened by the APC national leadership.

Barely one week later, eight members of the APC in the Benue State House of Assembly served an impeachment notice on Governor Ortom.

American television personality and socialite Kourtney Kardashian has parted ways with her model boyfriend Younes Bendjima after nearly two years of dating.
Reports say the relationship “didn’t end well” but that Bendjima doesn’t appear to be too heartbroken as he has been seen hanging out with friends on a beach in Mexico.
The 39-year-old Kardashian apparently ended the relationship with Bendjima, 25, and the former couple already unfollowed each other on social media, according to TMZ.
TMZ shared photos of Bendjima reportedly getting cozy with Jordan Ozuna, a former Hooters waitress, during his vacation.
However, Bendjima denied anything was going on between the pair.
“They really want me to be the bad guy,” Bendjima wrote on an Instagram story Tuesday, including a screenshot of a Daily Mail article about his “rebound” girl.
“Can’t I have fun with your friends anymore?”
Bendjima then posted several photos of his friends playing in the sand.
“I’m not attached to this ‘life’ so you can’t touch me,” he continued. “I know who I am, where I’m from and where I’m going and that bothers you; only one opinion matter, the one of my Lord.”
News of the split comes just weeks after Bendjima trolled the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star’s revealing bikini picture on Instagram.
“That’s what you need to show to get likes?” he said in a since-deleted comment.
Many Kardashian fans took issue with Bendjima’s comment, though the model claims it was just a joke, according to Us Weekly.
Kardashian began dating Bendjima in 2016 after years of on-again-off-again romance with Disick, with whom she shares three children, Mason, 8, Penelope, 6, and Reign, 3.

New ECOWAS Chairman, President Buhari with his predecessor Faure Gnassingbe and President of Liberia, George Weah in Lome

Experts on Wednesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to take his anti-corruption effort across the African continent to sensitise the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the evil effects of corruption on societies.

An economist, Prof. Olanrewaju Olaniyan, the Director, Centre for Sustainable Development University of Ibadan and Mr David Olojede, a council member of Ibadan Chamber of Commerce and Industry made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.

Olaniyan however said among the things on the front burner for President Buhari to tackle in ECOWAS are the issues of corruption and accountability at the ECOWAS secretariat and also in individual countries that made up ECOWAS.

“Another thing that he should tackle is that of free movement of persons especially as it concerns the movement of herdsmen and their cattle; so as to check the insecurity challenge in Nigeria; though, there is a protocol in ECOWAS that allows herdsmen to move from Senegal across Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana to Nigeria.”

The director also enjoined President Buhari to look into the issue of single currency by energising the West African Central Bank and ensure it come to fruition as it has been long overdue.

Olojede in his contribution urged the president to ensure Common Economic Tariff and also consolidate on economic integration, adding that it will boost income of member States if fully implemented.

“The common economic tariff is 20 per cent then we added the adjusted economic tariff which is 50 per cent meaning there is 70 per cent tariff on any goods in Nigeria.

“This implies the goods will be expensive in Nigeria and it will encourage smuggling, as people don’t want to pay 70 per cent tariff on goods in Nigeria.”

They however, urged President Buhari to improve on Nigeria’s infrastructure and provide required leadership in ECOWAS so that members clamouring for Morocco to join the community can believe in Nigeria.

President Buhari was  on July 31 in Lome elected the new chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS.

The president’s election was one of the highpoints of the 53rd Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS which held in the Togolese capital.

NAN also reports that on July 25, 2017, Buhari accepted his nomination to lead members of the African Union on anti-corruption crusade.

The President who has been in London since May 7 after leaving Abuja to see his doctors for follow-up medical checks gave the acceptance in a letter of appreciation addressed to President of Guinea, Alpha Conde.

Buhari was nominated by African leaders at the 29th Session of the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on July 4.
