A court in Sudan on Sunday sentenced a university student to death after convicting him of killing a policeman during protests in the capital last year, a defence lawyer said.

Asim Omer, who was studying at Khartoum University, was arrested in December 2016 and charged with killing the policeman after hundreds of students clashed with security forces at the campus on the banks of the Blue Nile in April of that year.

Last month, the court found Omer guilty, and on Sunday sentenced him to be hanged.

“The judge sentenced Asim Omer to be hanged to death after finding him guilty of killing a policeman,” defence lawyer Mohamed Arabi told AFP, adding that he would appeal.

After sentencing, during which AFP was unable to gain access to the courtroom, police fired tear gas to disperse a protest by students gathered outside the court.

The protests relocated to areas in and around Khartoum University, with those demonstrations also dispersed by the same means.

The opposition Popular Congress Party, of which Omer is a member, rejected the court’s ruling.

“The sentencing of Asim Omer is illegal because the judge didn’t have full evidence to convict him,” the party said in a statement.

“We will continue our fight in the higher court and all alternatives are open to us to save his life.”

Students at Khartoum University demonstrated several times last year against an alleged plan to sell off buildings belonging to the institution.

The government denied the charge, and police often resorted to firing tear gas.

Sunday’s ruling “definitely affects the image of the country and the image of the judiciary”, said prominent human rights activist Mudawi Ibrahim Adam.

In late 2016, sporadic anti-government rallies were staged in Khartoum after the government raised fuel prices.

The demonstrations were swiftly broken up by security forces, and dozens of opposition leaders and activists like Ibrahim Adam were arrested.

Adam was released last month under a presidential pardon.

The bloodiest crackdown on protesters came in September 2013, when dozens of demonstrators were killed during anti-austerity rallies.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Khartoum and other regions calling for the downfall of President Omar al-Bashir’s regime, also after fuel subsidies were slashed.

Amnesty International said at the time that about 200 people were killed, hundreds wounded and more than 800 arrested. The government gave a toll of less than 100 dead.

The United States of America has said it does not consider the Indigenous People of Biafra a terrorist organisation, SUNDAY PUNCH is reporting.

The highly authoritative newspaper quoted the spokesman for the American Embassy in Nigeria, Russell Brooks, as having said this.

The position of the US Government is coming on the heels of the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist organization by the Federal High Court in Abuja last week.
This followed the request of the Federal Government to the court to declare IPOB a terrorist organization.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, acting on a letter by President Muhammadu Buhari, had approached the court on the issue.
Justice Abdu Kafarati granted the request in chamber.

But Brooks told SUNDAY PUNCH: “The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy.

“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law.”

Motorists plying the Benin-Auchi-Okene highway have urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on the busy highway.

Some of the motorists told the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday that the call became necessary owing to the situation of the road.

The motorists, who decried the loss of man-hour and human lives on the road linking the Southern and Northern parts of the country, said the highway had totally collapsed due to years of neglect.

NAN observed that motorists have completely abandoned the road and have resorted to taking longer alternative routes to connect from Edo Central to the Northern part of the state and the Northern part of the country.

The motorists stressed that if nothing was done to urgently address the situation, the alternative routes which are also not in good condition may soon become unmotorable.

A motorist, Maxwel Idigie, who expressed concern, said drivers had no option other than to bear untold hardship to get to their destinations via the highway.

“We havenever a time have never had to experience a situation like this on the route.

“We complained when it was not even as bad as it is now, but as we speak, nobody uses that route again.

“For some time now, we have been taking longer routes to cut off those roads that have totally collapsed.

“Those going to Ekpoma, Auchi or North of the county go through Agbor Road to connect to Ugoneki and Ujogba and then to the road at Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo,” he said.

According to him, same goes for motorists going to Sabongidda Ora, Afuze and Akoko-Edo that now links the communities through Ifon in Ondo State.

“It will interest you to know also that those going to Abuja also connects Okene through Igarra and Ososo in Akoko-Edo.

“This long and toutorous journey has not only greatly affected our income but also other associated inconveniences,” he said.

Also, Abel Osageduwa, a motorist, said the alternative routes were wearing off owing to its use by articulated vehicles that were not designed for the road.

Osageduwa, therefore, appealed to government to declare a state of emergency on the Benin-Auchi-Okene highway.

He said that the declaration would pave way for a solution to the problem.

“Last Friday, we spent over three hours on a particular spot near Ujogba because articulated vehicles that have rendered the road bad, got stuck on the bad spot on that alternative route.

“Friday was another trying time for us on that route; this would not have been if the major road was in order.

“The Ujogba road which was constructed by Oshiomhole’s government was not meant for heavy duty vehicles,” he said.

Another motorist, Andrew Momodu, appealed to the government to fix the highway, saying that the situation was compelling motorists to increase transport fare.

A commuter who simply identified herself as Nana, said that the cost of transportation to Auchi was hiked to N1500 from N1000 on Friday owing to traffic congestion that was experienced on the alternative route.

NAN reports that Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo and members of the state legislature had recently under taken separate assessment tours of the Benin-Auchi-Okene highway.

They all condemned the state of the road and called on the Federal Government to urgently fix it.

It will be recalled also that Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, had said that remedial work on the highway would begin as soon as the rains subsided.

Gunmen, suspected to be sea pirates, have murdered two policemen and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Bayelsa State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday night on the Ekebiri waterways of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

The sea pirates, it was learnt, lay in wait in a concealed position in Ekebiri creek and opened fire on sighting the patrol team comprising policemen and civil defenders.

The victims, who were said to be members of an anti-vandals’ team, were reportedly on a routine patrol when the gunmen attacked them.

The gunmen were said to have snatched the rifles of their victims, whose bodies were later recovered by divers.

The deceased NSCDC personnel identified as Sango Potipher, was said to be an indigene of Okpotuari community of Southern Ijaw.

Sources said the security operatives were patrolling the Tebidaba Flow Station when they came under the surprise attack about 7pm.

A top security source from the community, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said, “While on patrol at Tebidaba area in Southern Ijaw, the combined team of NSCDC was ambushed.

“There was a fierce gun battle between the security operatives and the gunmen. But a personnel of the NSCDC was killed while two policemen were killed. The rifles of the victims were carted away by the hoodlums.”

The source also said that some other security operatives sustained injuries during the attack.

Another security source, who equally craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said when the sad news filtered in about 9pm, they quickly dispatched security surveillance to the area.

He stated, “The news got to us at about 9pm. When we dispatched our security surveillance team to the area, we saw a military gunboat with some NSCDC personnel that escaped the attack.

“They recovered the corpses of the killed security personnel without their rifles. The unknown gunmen had taken their guns.”

When contacted, the Bayelsa State Commandant, NSCDC, Mr. Desmond Agu, confirmed the incident.

Agu said investigations were ongoing to arrest the perpetrators (killers) of the security personnel.
