Commissioner of Police in the state, Imohimi Edgal, at a press briefing in the government office in Alausa, Ikeja, said adequate preparations have been made to mitigate the impact of the road diversions on residents, while access would be given to any emergency.

“To ensure smooth, security-free visit of the President, we would need to do some diversions. Some certain roads will be closed at certain times; some diversions will be made,” he said.

Edgal, who called for support and understanding over the diversions added that the road closures and diversions will be temporary and immediately the President leaves a certain location, that area will be opened for the general public.

He listed the areas to be affected to include Bank Anthony Way in Ikeja, Agege Motor Road, a section of Eko Hotel Road in Victoria Island and Old Marina in Ikoyi axis.

Commercial motorcycles operators are also urged to stay away from the prohibited roads.

“We will not want to see commercial motorcycles plying the prohibited routes of Agege Motor Road, Bank Anthony Way and anywhere on the Island. Should that order be disobeyed, we would be constrained to ensure that you are arrested with your motorcycles impounded.

“Whoever is also found as a passenger will also be arrested and prosecuted so do not patronise these Okadas on these prohibited routes not only for the purpose of the visit but also to ensure that Lagos State Laws on the regulation of commercial motorbikes are obeyed at all times,” Edgal said.

He added that three locations have been designated for all first emergency responders to station their equipment and officials including the Police, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), LASAMBUS, Civil Defence, Fire Brigade, among others at Ikeja, Victoria Island and Free Trade Zone at Lekki-Akodo axis. The leadership of the Congress of Northern Nigeria Christians in Kaduna on Monday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to do all within his power to rescue Miss Leah Sharibu, the only Christian girl yet to be released by Boko Haram after the Dapchi schoolgirls’ abduction.

The new organisation, CNNC, was inaugurated by a former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on November 11, 2017.

Leah was among the 110 female students of the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State abducted by Boko Haram from the school on February 19.

While all the girls have been released by the sect and reunited with their parents, Leah is still being held because she refused to renounce her faith.

Briefing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Kaduna on Monday, the CNNC noted with concern the abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls after the Chibok saga and demanded freedom for all kidnapped girls.

The text of the press conference was read by the spokesman for  the organisation, Larry Yammai, while a former Vice-Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University, Prof. Adamu Baiki,  responded to questions raised by journalists.

Baiki is the interim chairman of CNNC.

Yammai said while the group rejoiced that the rest of the students had been released and reunited with their families, “the fate of Sharibu still hangs in the balance.”

He said, “CNNC notes with great concern the abduction of yet another set of schoolgirls. While we rejoice that almost all the girls have been released, we are heavily saddened that our daughter, Miss Leah Sharibu, is being held because of her faith.

“The truth is very obvious that the destruction project of the Boko Haram sect is very much targeted at Christians.  CNNC strongly condemns this evil tendency and urges Mr. President to, as a matter of urgency, intervene and ensure the immediate release of this young girl.”

On the Chibok girls, the spokesman said the group appreciated the effort of the Buhari government in rescuing the girls but demanded that all the remaining Chibok girls and other victims be released without delay.

“It is ironical that the detained terrorists are being released in greater numbers in the name of de-radicalisation while their captives are still being held,” Yammai added.

The CNNC, he added, condemned the persistent killings by herdsmen in the Middle Belt region and parts of South-South.

The new group also knocked the President for his lopsided appointments, noting that, “qualified and loyal citizens from the North who happen to be Christians are often turned away in their legitimate quest for jobs because of their faith.

“By the same reason, they are denied promotion. This unfair treatment should not have any place in the 21st Century when all nations are seeking for quality and experience hands to develop their countries.

“The northern state governments should please look into this matter and ensure that equity prevails in employment practices.”

The police at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, Lagos, have yet to arrest an executive member of the Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Babatope Adeeso, seven months after he was reported at the police unit for allegedly issuing dud cheques.

The case was reported in September 2017 and assigned to a policeman, identified as Ike, who reportedly refused to arrest the fuel marketer.

PUNCH had reported that Adeeso sometime in April 2017 bought pairs of shoes, wristwatches, perfumes and clothes worth N496,000 for himself, wife and children, from a boutique operator, Mrs. Bola Omidiji, at 5, Education Close, UNILAG Estate, in the Magodo area of the state.

He had asked the woman to follow him to a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank in the area to transfer the money via an Automated Teller Machine when he could not pay through the Point of Sale terminal.

After failed attempts to transfer the money through the ATM, Adeeso reportedly collected the woman’s account number and promised to effect the payment later that day.

He, however, allegedly reneged on his promise and failed to pay the money on subsequent dates he gave the trader.

In July 2017, he allegedly issued her First Bank cheques in three tranches of the sum; but they were dishonoured.

When our correspondent contacted Adeeso in January 2018, he confirmed the debt and issuance of the dud cheques and promised to pay by the end of February.

Omidiji, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, said a colleague of the fuel marketer mediated after the January 12, PUNCH’s report and there was an agreement that she would be paid N100,000 every week until the money was complete.

She said Adeeso broke the agreement after paying N174,000, adding that the Investigating Police Officer, Ike, always came up with excuses whenever she demanded that they visited the debtor’s base at Mosinmi depot, Ogun State, together.

She said, “The day the publication came out, his senior colleague, who is also an executive member of IPMAN called me. He said the publication was an embarrassment to IPMAN. He said Babatope (Adeeso) was entitled to a sum of N90,000 every week. Babatope later transferred N100,000 to my account. Two weeks after, I got another transfer of N74,400. Since then, his line has not been reachable.

“After he failed to meet up with the agreement, I called the IPO. He said he had gone to Monsimi twice, but he didn’t see Adeeso. I asked him that we should go there together and he promised that we would go the following Friday. I called him that day, but he did not pick my calls. Two days after, I called again and he said he travelled to Abuja for an urgent assignment.

“We fixed another appointment. On the day we were supposed to go, he said he got an urgent call to go to the Area F Police Command in Ikeja. He later told me that he had been transferred from the SCIID and that he had handed over the case.

“I met with a senior police officer, who is his boss. The man said the IPO did not hand over the case file and advised that the process of arresting him (Adeeso) would be started afresh. I am worried that the SCIID is not handling the case seriously.”

Repeated calls put across to Adeeso’s line by our correspondent indicated that it was switched off.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, promised to get back with comments. LR News
