IGP. Ibrahim Idris

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has commended the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, for making the security of lives and property in the state a priority.

Idris said this was why the state was chosen for the 2017 South-South Security Summit, which held during the week.

According to a statement, the IGP stated this while he paid a visit to the governor shortly before the commencement of the summit.

Commending the governor, Idris said, “Akwa Ibom State is one of the very few states we have in this country where you can see that security is taken as a very serious issue.

“Your Excellency, this is an issue we believe other states can take a cue from. We are obviously here to appreciate your commitment to peace, to appreciate your commitment to good governance.”

The IGP also reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting the lives and property of the citizens.

In his remarks, Emmanuel said he would deepen the smooth relationship the state had with the police to ensure a safe and peaceful society for the residents.

He, however, called on the IGP to tackle the increasing rate of rape cases, especially against minors, urging prompt prosecution of the culprits.

He said, “It is very traumatising at times when you hear of a five-year-old girl being raped by an adult. Believe me, I can’t sleep or eat that day.

“I believe that if the police put pressure on the judiciary over this heinous crime against humanity, the judiciary will also sit up.”
