No fewer than 14 school children have been injured after their van collided head-on with a truck in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Thursday, police said.

The accident occurred on Kairana Bypass Road in the state’s Shamli district.

“The collision took place this morning when the van was carrying the children to their school. All the injured children have been admitted to various hospitals,” a police official said.

He said the condition of some of the injured children are said to be serious.

Eye-witnesses told cops that the truck was travelling at high speed and its driver failed to apply brakes after suddenly spotting the school van, leading to the accident.

The police said a probe has been ordered into the incident.

“The truck driver has been booked for rash and negligent driving. A manhunt has been launched to nab him,” he added.
