The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has deployed 5,000 policemen, two helicopters and six Armoured Personnel Carriers for the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) holding today in Abuja.
Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, said the IGP directed the implementation of the robust security arrangement to ensure a hitch-free convention.
“A total number of 5,000 Police Personnel comprising, the Police Mobile Force Unit have been deployed under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Department of Operations, to ensure adequate security for all the accredited participants at the convention,” he said on Friday.
Moshood also explained that the operation would involve officers from the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Special Protection Unit (SPU), the Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD), the Police Mounted Troop, The Dog Section (K9), and the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID).
While the police would allow only accredited delegates accredited party officials bearing the APC clearance/identification tags will be allowed into the Eagles Square venue of the exercise, security coverage has been beefed up all the accreditation centres.
Moshood, who is also a Deputy Commissioner of Police, is optimistic that the police would collaborate with other security agencies to ensure a hitch-free convention.
The police spokesman also reiterated the commitment of the force in maintaining law and order during the exercise.
Moshood, however, warned individuals, who intend to cause mayhem to steer clear from the venue as the long arm of the law would catch up with them.
He assured that the police officers deployed would be civil, polite and firm in the discharge of their duties during the convention.
