Washington Post reports on the continued absence of President Buhari from Nigeria. Meanwhile, former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, faults Nigerian leaders over a recent call-out by CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Buhari.

Shortly after CNN programme, Global Public Square (GPS) hosted by Fareed Zakaria reported on the absence of President Muhammdu Buhari from the country, another foreign media, the Washington Post has reported on the issue.

The newspaper in a report on Monday July 31, stated President Buhari had been out of the country since May 7, seeking medical care in London, adding that the president was yet to disclose the nature of his condition.

Recalling the recent visit of some All Progressives Congress (APC) officials to the president in London, the report stated that the photos from the visit were first images of him since he left Nigeria. It also stated that this was Buhari’s second medical leave to the United Kingdom this year; noting that his previous trip was nearly two-months long.

The newspaper stated that Buhari’s poor health and absence from the country has raised questions about governance in Nigeria.

The Washington Post reported on how former Nigerian president, Umaru Yar’Adua sought emergency treatment in Saudi Arabia in November 2009, stating that Yar’Adua returned to Nigeria in February 2010, but he died in office just three months after his return.

On the programme Global Public Square (GPS) hosted by Fareed Zakaria, the CNN anchor had asked his viewers to identify the country whose president has not been in office for over 2 months.

Among the countries listed as possible answers was Nigeria, which indeed turned out to be the correct answer. Reacting to the report, Fani-Kayode said the shame the leaders have brought upon the country will be multiplied a million times in their lives.

Speaking at a one-day seminar organised by the Nigeria Association of Campus Journalists at the Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, the Publisher of PRNigeria, Yushau Shuaib, said campus journalism should be a platform for healthy debate and to develop their talents in writings.
Worried about the increasing wave of conflicts and crises in some high institutions of learning in Nigeria, Campus Journalists have been urged to be tolerant in their reports and refrain from engaging in issues capable of creating tension in the society.

Shuaib, who spoke on: “The Role of Campus Journalism in Building Tolerance and Taming Conflicts,” said campus journalists can fight cultism and drug addiction among other vices through advocacy campaigns and constructive engagements with the students.

He said: “Campus journalism should serve as a platform for debate on ideas and a Channel for tolerance, mutual relationship and peaceful coexistence. The Campus journalist should, therefore, serve as a guard to counter hate-speech and defuse tensions; a Manager in conflict Resolution, a helper of the poor, a defender of the weak and an advocate for Justice and Fairness.”
Shuaib charged the students to always endeavour to be humane by refraining from destroying people’s reputation.

He said: “Journalists are to criticise constructively and you have to be objective by upholding truth at all times. You should also know that journalism is about humanity. You must be humane and keep away from reports capable of destroying people’s reputation.
“Therefore, you should endeavour to educate and enlighten your fellow students on happenings on the campus and also highlight some of the accomplishments of excellent students.”

Shuaib cautioned the students against intolerance and rumour mongering.
“Don’t indulge in bias and misleading reports. Discard culture of lies and hatred. Intolerance is the reason we have crises in many parts of the country. Intolerance breeds conflict which leads to violence,” he added.
Speaking on the same theme at the occasion, a Senior Lecturer at the university, Mansur Buhari, advised campus journalists to be truthful, courageous and fair in their reportage.

Meanwhile, on the travails of former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki, Shuaib, who recently released a book: “An Encounter with the Spymaster,” said Nigerians were being deceived by toxic falsehood and biased information for ulterior motives.
Shuaib, who had served as Media Consultant to Military and Security Agencies, maintained that no fewer than 25 towns in North East Nigeria were recovered from Boko Haram before the 2015 peaceful elections in Nigeria, contrary to misinformation by some vested interest.

He said: “Some of the liberated towns during Sambo Dasuki’s tenure as NSA included, but not limited to: Abadam, Askira, Baga, Bama, Bara, Buni Yadi, Damboa, Dikwa, Gamboru-Ngala, Goniri, Gujba, Gulag, Gulani, Gwoza, Hong, Kala Balge, Konduga, Kukawa, Marte, Madagali, Michika, Monguno, Mubi, Vimtim among others.

“It is sad that many people are vilifying Dasuki  today because they do not want to hear or share the truth. Not only were those towns recovered from Boko Haram during his tenure, there are videos and pictorial evidence. A mere news google search of credible media could confirm the same efforts of the Nigerian military in conjunction with allied forces.

“The same Nigerian military is performing exceedingly well in the current dispensation in the face challenges. Therefore, verbal attacks on individuals for political reasons should not becloud our sense of judgement.”
The one-day seminar was supported by PRNigeria and Economic Confidential as Corporate Social Responsibility to boost the capacity of campus journalists on the required skills and basic tenets of journalism, as there is no Mass Communication Department yet in the University.

                          AMERICAN PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP
These leaders will include Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and the two Bushes, George Jnr and his father

American President Donald Trump has excoriated his predecessors over their policy stance on China by  allowing the country’s trade with US to boom, while it has done  nothing to rein in the military expansion of North Korea.
Trump in a tweet late on Saturday referred to past leaders as foolish.
These leaders will include Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and the two Bushes, George Jnr and his father.

“Our foolish past leaders have allowed them (China) to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet…they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem!” he said in  tweets late on Saturday.
Trump, who believes he is smarter than any one else in America, allowed today two B-1B bombers to fly over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after recent North Korean missile tests.
The US Air Force said in a statement on Sunday that the B-1B flight was in direct response to the missile test and the previous July 3 launch of the “Hwansong-14” rocket.

North Korea had on Friday said it conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile that proved its ability to strike America’s mainland, drawing a sharp warning from US President Donald Trump.
The bombers took off from a US air base in Guam, and were joined by Japanese and South Korean fighter jets during the exercise, according to the statement.
“North Korea remains the most urgent threat to regional stability,” Pacific Air Forces commander General Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy said in the statement.
“If called upon, we are ready to respond with rapid, lethal, and overwhelming force at a time and place of our choosing.”

The US has in the past used overflights of the supersonic B1-B “Lancer” bomber as a show of force in response to North Korean missile or nuclear tests.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the midnight test launch of the missile on Friday night and said it was a “stern warning” for the United States that it would not be safe from destruction if it tries to attack, the North’s official KCNA news agency said.
North Korea’s state television broadcast pictures of the launch, showing the missile lifting off in a fiery blast in darkness and Kim cheering with military aides.

The Hwasong-14, named after the Korean word for Mars, reached an altitude of 3,724.9 km (2,314.6 miles) and flew 998 km (620 miles)for 47 minutes and 12 seconds before landing in the waters off the Korean peninsula’s east coast, KCNA said.
Western experts said calculations based on that flight data and estimates from the US, Japanese and South Korean militaries showed the missile could have been capable of going as far into the United States as Denver and Chicago.
China, the North’s main ally, said it opposed North Korea’s missile launches, which it said violate United Nations Security Council resolutions designed to curb Pyongyang’s banned nuclear and missile programmes.

"At the same time, China hopes all parties act with caution, to prevent tensions from continuing to escalate,” China’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
However, Trump said he was “very disappointed in China”.
North Korea refers to the United States as its sworn enemy in its propaganda, and has done so since the 1950-53 Korean War in which the Soviet and Chinese-backed North fought against the U.S.-backed South. The isolated country often shows mockup images of a missile hitting key U.S. landmarks in its media.

The senators were about briefing the press when a mob struck at the venue
Two senators from Kaduna State, Shehu Sani and Suleiman Hunkuyi, on Sunday escaped mob attack in Kaduna.
The senators were about briefing the press when a mob struck at the venue.
They were ferried to safety by their security aides and journalists at the venue.
Sani and Hunkuyi were to brief newsmen at the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists of Journalists in Kaduna, Kaduna State when they were attacked.
The mob destroyed the car in which the senators rode to the Press Centre.
So also did they damage properties, including midgets, cameras, tripods for cameras and chairs, at the Press Centre.
It would be recalled that Sani has been attacked several times, developments he had traced to his face-off with the Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai.
Just last week, the Senate Committee on Foreign Loans, which Sani chairs, deferred the approval of a loan request by the Kaduna State Government and some others, while it gave approval for some.

The arrest followed the commencement of the demolition of illegal structures in the area by the Lagos State Government
No fewer than 74 persons have been arrested for smoking and selling illicit drugs at Obalende area of Lagos State.
The arrest followed the commencement of the demolition of illegal structures in the area by the Lagos State Government.
The Government had given the owner of the illegal structures several warnings to quit the area, with the last one issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Tunji Bello.
The demolition of the illegal structures, shanties and containerised shops around Obalende flyover to pave ways for the free flow of drainages and canals.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that the 48 hours “Abatement Notice” served traders/occupiers of illegal structures, shanties and containarised shops by the Agency around Obalende flyover expired on July 27, 2017, but the government gave another 48 hours grace for them to remove their wares and belongings before the commencement of the demolition exercise.

Egbeyemi disclosed further that the activities of these illegal traders, mechanics and people living around/under the flyover were an eyesore as they all dumped refuse and used tyres into the canal and drainages, thereby blocking the free flow of water, which resulted in flooding.
He stated that no responsible and responsive government would tolerate illegality of a few people causing damages and destructions to the generality of innocent members of the public.

The Chairman confirmed that well over 120 illegal structures, shanties and containerised shops have so far been demolished and 20 abandoned vehicles under the flyover by mechanics were towed or removed by the Agency.
Egbeyemi hinted that all those arrested, including miscreants and hoodlums, who smoke and sell illicit drugs during the demolition exercise, which is to last for 10 days, would be thoroughly screened by the Agency before being taken to court.

He implored members of the public, particularly traders around bridges and flyover across the State, to desists from dumping refuse and other metals, including used tyres by vulcanizers/mechanics into canals and drainages.
Sunday Eze said he has been staying under the Obalende flyover for over 17 years with his family.
Eze said: “I am 70 years of age and I have been living with my wife and three children under Obalende Bridge since I left Abia State over 17 years ago.”

Eze, who said he doesn’t have any relatives around Lagos, commended the government for giving him another 48 hours grace after the expiration of initial six months “Abatement Notice” for them to remove their wares and properties.
Another trader, Alhaja Bilikisu Adigun, said she has been trading and living inside a containerised shop under Obalende flyover with her husband for over 23 years.

Adigun stated she had packed all her wares and properties before the commencement of the demolition exercise.
A man who identified himself as Akintunde Folami commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for demolishing illegal structures, shanties and containerised shops around Obalende.
Folami noted that miscreants and hoodlums terrorised innocent citizens around the area by dispossessing them of their valuables such as phones, wallets and jeweleries, both early in the morning and late at night.

Mzimela (middle) launched her own airline in 21st
Sizakele Petunia Mzimela launched Fly Blue Crane in South Africa in 2015. She became the first black woman to launch her own airline. She was also the first female CEO of South African Airways

It is often said that anything a man can do, a woman can do better. One South African woman demonstrated this by launching her own airline. Sizakele Petunia Mzimela achieved the amazing feat in September 2015 when she founded Fly Blue Crane, in the process becoming the first black woman to do so.
She worked for SAA from 1997 until 2012 when she ventured out on her own

The businesswoman began her career with South African Airways (SAA) in 1997 as a market analyst. She rose to become SAA CEO from 2010 to 2012.

Under her leadership, SAA grew by leaps and bounds, adding eight regional routes in one year and introducing direct flights to New York and Beijing.

Having served with distinction, she took an extraordinary leap of faith to venture out on her own. Fly Blue Crane, which she also heads as CEO, now has two 50-seat ERJ 145 aircraft and offers low-cost domestic flights in South Africa.

In a recent interview, Mzimela said: "We aim to make our mark serving the increasingly commercially significant provincial and regional capitals. Our aim in the coming years is to make air travel an altogether better and more rewarding experience in Southern Africa."

She added that her airline intends to expand into the Southern African region, including Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Democratic Republic of Congo.

                                   Kemi Olunloyo & Seyi Law
It is no longer news that top Nigerian comedian and ex governor's daughter, Kemi Olunloyo have been having exchange of words on social media. The war started after Kemi Olunloyo took it upon herself to bash the baby of Seyi Law, calling her several names.

Now the comedian has revealed that he has nothing against Kemi Olunloyo. Following the exchange of words between Kemi Olunloyo and Seyi law, the latter has decided to shoulder all that has been said to him and his family in order to forge ahead. In a recent chat with Saturday beat, the comedian noted that he holds no grudge against Kemi Olunloyo as she is perceived to be his enemy.

He said he has realised that Kemi Olunloyo is a brilliant fellow, “I don’t have any grudge against Kemi Olunloyo. The truth is that I see a lot of brilliance in her but it is just that her way of doing things without having ethical values is what makes people get pissed at her."

Speaking of how he could get back at Kemi Olunloyo if he wanted to, Seyi said he could sue her in the US and make her pay through her nose. In his word, "she claims to be a citizen of the US and my child is a US citizen. I could decide to sue her in the US and she would pay out of her nose. She could even be the one to pay the money that would send my child to school. Some people are brilliant but they take their stupidity to an extent that they ruin themselves along the line. Brilliance without caution would make you become foolish."

“The publication follows months of consultations on how to reduce the impact of diesel vehicles, and accelerate the move to cleaner transport,” the government said in a statement on Wednesday.
The British Government is set to publish its plan to ban petrol- and diesel-fuelled vehicles by 2040 in a bid to improve air quality by reducing nitrogen dioxide emissions.
“The publication follows months of consultations on how to reduce the impact of diesel vehicles, and accelerate the move to cleaner transport,” the government said in a statement on Wednesday.
Britain’s High Court ordered the government to produce a plan following a legal challenge by environmental groups.
“The government will also announce plans to spend some three billion pounds (3.9 billion dollars) on improving air quality, including 255 million pounds for local authorities to tackle diesel emissions,’’ the BBC and other media reported.
Ahead of the plan’s publication, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which represents Britain’s automotive industry, urged the government not to impose a complete ban on diesel engines.
According to Mike Hawes, the group’s Chief Executive, demand for alternatively fuelled vehicles is growing but still at a very low level presently, as consumers have concerns over affordability, range and charging points.
Hawes said: “Outright bans risk undermining the present market for new cars and our sector, which supports more than 800,000 jobs across the UK.
“So, the industry instead wants a positive approach which gives consumers incentives to purchase these cars.
“We could undermine the UK’s successful automotive sector if we don’t allow enough time for the industry to adjust.”
Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron published a similar plan to phase out diesel and petrol cars by 2040.

The released students in Akure on Friday
                  The Released Students
Fresh facts have emerged on how the release of the six Igbonla Model College students was secured on Friday at Ajamkpa in Ese-Odo Local Government of Ondo State.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the governments of Ondo, Ogun, Delta and Lagos states began negotiations with the kidnappers 10 days ago when information came out that the students were kept at the creeks in the riverine communities of Ondo State.

The students, Peter Jonah, Isiaq Rahmon, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf, were kidnapped from their state-owned school on May 25.
The Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, who is also from the area, was said to have led the negotiations with the militants, on behalf of the Lagos State Government.
“I know the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Mr. Agboola Ajayi who is from the waterside area met with some leaders in the area and a negotiation was made,” a source at the Ondo State Government House, said.

He said Mr. Agboola made several contacts with the militants before they were released on Friday at Ajamkpa community.
The source said the Ondo State Government also relied on the cooperation of the Nigerian Navy and the Joint Military Task Force to secure the release of the children.
“The release of the six students followed the intervention of the government of the Ondo State after days of pressure and negotiations,” the source said.

“Prominent people tried all they could to intervene.
“The Delta State deputy governor was even in the creeks personally to ensure the negotiations, but without success.
“All of a sudden, I think the kidnappers changed their minds and released the students to the Ondo State Government alone after some talks.

“Eventually, the students were released by their abductors and the Navy and the marine police were contacted to transport the students outside the creeks.
“Some of the students told us that they had been living comfortably with their abductors in the last 64 days. One of them said they were being fed with bread and sardines while they also sleep comfortably” the source explained.”
The Chief Press Secretary to Mr. Agboola, Leke Akeredolu, confirmed that his principal led the negotiations with the kidnappers.
He, however, failed to give further details on how the kids were rescued.

PREMIUM TIMES further learnt that the students are already on their way to Lagos to be reunited with their parents.
A mother of one of the kidnapped students earlier confirmed the release to PREMIUM TIMES.
“They have been released. The deputy governor of Ondo state called me and I spoke with my son,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government on Friday expressed excitement over the release of the students.
In a press statement, the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, congratulated the parents of the students and all concerned stakeholders over the development, just as he said the students would undergo series of medical tests and trauma therapy before they are reunited with their families.

“This is a welcome development and the state government has always believed that the students would be released unhurt. The news of their release is, therefore, a confirmation of that belief and we are glad that they would be reuniting with their families,” Mr. Ayorinde said.
The commissioner said the state government remained resolute in its commitment to ensure the safety of lives and property of residents in the state and has already beefed up security in schools to prevent a re-occurrence.

Reacting to the release of the students, the Safe Schools and Communities Advocacy Group while congratulating the parents and Lagosians noted that they were “released, not rescued.’’
“This means that for all of the 64 days, the police and security agencies did little or nothing,” said Hassan Soweto, the group’s coordinator.
“It also means that in the given situation, parents of the victims, who are majorly civil servants and self-employed people, were left with no option but to sell their properties in order to raise the ransom money.

“This situation, of course, means that all of the critical questions we raised in the course of the kidnap are very relevant and must be addressed in the wake of the kidnapped children otherwise it is only a matter of time before another kidnap case occurs.”
The group has been vocal in its condemnation of the handling of the abduction by the Lagos State government.

CHALIE DAY
Instead of complaining or comparison, it's you,  your hand work, and the risk you take that provide real value in life.

You cannot let a fear of failure or a fear of comparison or a fear of judgement stop you from doing the things that will make you great.

You cannot succeed without the risk of failure,

You cannot have a voice without the risk of criticism.

You cannot love without the risk of loss.

You must take these risks."

Zimbabwe President, Mugabe and his Wife
Africa’s oldest leader, Mugabe, 93, has ruled the former British colony since independence in 1980 but has insisted that ZANU-PF, and not him, will choose his eventual successor when the time comes.
First Lady Grace Mugabe of Zimbabwe on Thursday challenged her president husband Robert to name his preferred successor to end deepening divisions over the future leadership of the ruling ZANU-PF party.

African oldest leader, Mugabe, 93, has ruled the former British colony since independence in 1980 but has insisted that ZANU-PF, and not him, will choose his eventual successor when the time comes.

However, at a meeting of ZANU-PF’s women’s wing in Harare, Grace Mugabe contradicted the veteran leader, who also attended the meeting, saying he should name a successor.
ZBC said: “The First Lady and Zanu-PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs have challenged the President to name his successor saying this has been the trend in other countries.

"The First Lady said there is nothing wrong with Mugabe naming his successor, saying the move will enable all members to rally behind one candidate.’’
However, Mugabe did not speak at the meeting.
Fighting over leadership of a post-Mugabe ZANU-PF has intensified in the last three years, with two distinct camps emerging, one supporting Vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the other rooting for Grace Mugabe.

Mugabe is ZANU-PF’s presidential candidate for the 2018 election, his last under the constitution.
He will be 99 years if he wins and completes the five-year term.
According to the constitution, elections are due after July 21, 2018.

However, political analysts said Mugabe could call for an early vote, citing his frail health, and that he may want to take advantage of divisions within opposition ranks.
Zimbabwe has since independence always held elections in March, with the exception of 2000 and 2013, both years when elections were delayed by a constitutional referendum.

                               Fatai Owoseni Lagos State CP.
The property had been occupied by a faction loyal to Sheriff before the Supreme Court delivered judgement in favor of Makarfi. Following the apex court’s ruling however, the state executive led by Hon. Mashood Salvador has been making moves to return back to the property.

In order to prevent clashes between both camps, the Lagos state police command took over the secretariat. A new twist emerged in the crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the party’s Lagos secretariat was sealed off by policemen on Thursday July 27.

According to reports, the secretariat, located on Adekunle Fajuyi Way in Ikeja GRA, Lagos, had been taken over by heavily armed policemen earlier in the day.

The Lagos state police command, hence, took over the secretariat in order to prevent clashes between both camps. According to the command, in a statement signed by its spokesman ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, it had sealed up the secretariat “as a result of the little crisis between the two (2) leadership factions.” It added further, “the command is using this opportunity to warn both factions to maintain peace and order in the state”.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the ousted former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made a complete turn-around, after initially congratulating Ahmed Makarfi over his victory at the Supreme Court.

Sheriff stated that he was in shock over the ruling, and was waiting to be briefed by his lawyers about the situation. His new reaction was contained in a statement signed by Dr. Cairo Ojuogboh, his erstwhile deputy; and Bernard Mikko, his faction’s former spokesperson.

"I assure you, three months after the assent of Mr. President, you will see that the entire country will come to normalcy. Agitation of secession by the Biafrans, the quit notice from the Northern youths and all other agitations in the country now, all will be stopped."
