The Imo state governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Hope Uzodinma, Wednesday assured the Southeast region that the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari would continue to favour the Ndigbo.

Uzodinma spoke through his Director of Media and Special Duties, Declan Emelumba, in Owerri, while reacting to the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari, as the winner of 2019 Saturday’s presidential election.

It was Uzodinma’s view that the second journey of Buhari, would be inclusive based style of governance.

He added that, in order for Imo state to be connected to the center, that Imolites should come out and vote massively for APC, in the forthcoming governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Mallam Sadiq Umar, the senator-elect for  Kwara North Senatorial District, says  Senate President Bukola Saraki lost his senatorial seat because he was no longer connected with the  electorate.
Umar said this  in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ilorin.
The senator-elect, who was reacting to  the victory of the All Progressives  Congress (APC) in the state, said Saraki’s political relevance  had always been overrated.
He said that the senate president was able to hold  the state in his grips for so  long because elections had always been rigged in his favour.
According to him, Kwara has suffered a protracted leadership problem and now they have  the opportunity to speak out loudly.
“The victory is an anticipated one and we are very happy about it. Everybody is very happy because it was a very free and fair election.
” Kwarans are very clear; enough is enough. They have not had a good leader and those who are ruling Kwara are not giving the best of leadership to the people.
“So the people want a change and we are very happy the electorate have spoken very loudly that they are with APC and all candidates of APC won the elections from Presidential to National Assembly members,’’ he said.
Umar described the development as a new dawn for  Kwara, saying all what the citizens had been deprived would be given to them.
“Kwara will see development in infrastructure, employment, empowerment, prompt payment of salary and improvement in salary among others,’’  he said.
He urged the citizens to keep faith with  the party and the newly elected representatives, assuring that they would not fail the people.
“My message to them is that there is hope for them. We will never fail them.
“We are aware of the nascent experience in Nigeria, particularly in Kwara. We just have to deliver the goods to the people of Kwara or else there will be a judgment day.
“We are aware of that. We are responsible citizens who came into politics for the purpose of serving our people.
“We are very grateful that they kept the faith. They promised they will support us and they did it overwhelmingly.
“We are going to pay them back with good governance and the best service we can render to them.
“So there is hope in Kwara,  particularly in Kwara North that is  backward in everything.
“We need to speed and catch up as soon as we can,’’  said the newly elected senator.

Nepal Police spokesman Uttam Raj Subedi, however, said it was not clear if he got off the aircraft when it made a stop before it lost contact with the airport tower in Kathmandu.
He said rescuers were searching for the chopper, but the weather was making the operation difficult in an area about 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the Nepalese capital.

Governor Rochas Okorocha

The Returning Officer for the Imo West senatorial election on Saturday, Prof Innocent Ibeawuchi,  has said that the supporters of Governor Rochas Okorocha, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, compelled him to declare the governor winner of Saturday’s elections.

The result showed that Okorocha scored  97,762 votes defeat the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party  Mr Jones Onyereri (68,117), and the All Progressive Grand Alliance’s Osita Izunaso (30,084).

Speaking to reporters after the results were announced on Monday in Owerri,  Ibeawuchi said that he was held hostage from 7pm on Sunday till 11am on Monday. He added that policemen and soldiers came to his rescue after the announcement was made.

According to him, he had to make the announcement to save his life. He added that the election was supposed to be inconclusive, because of the electoral fraud  in eight  LGAs.

He said, “I was compelled to announce the result which was inconclusive. I am a man  of integrity and it is not true that the governor slapped me but  I was held hostage by agents working for him. I was manhandled and I thank God I came back alive.”

However, Okorocha dismissed the allegations, insisting he deserved to win the election.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, the governor described the  returning officer as “a bloody liar who may be acting a script”.

He said, “Having won  in nine out of the 12 local government areas announced, we heard that they were   trying to move the result sheets to Owerri but when we demanded an explanation, the man (Ibeawuchi) said he was  tired and didn’t feel safe, when nobody was threatening him. At the end, we discovered that  he didn’t have the declaration sheet. I wonder where this is taking us. I hope INEC would change this system because we will resist them if they try it in the next election.”

“They should examine the returning officer to know his mental state. If he doesn’t  have a  mental illness, then he must be a criminal to ever think of that. How could someone ask you to change the result of an election he has already won? My score is above 90,000 and the nearest to me is slightly above half of it, when you combine both Jones and Izunaso’s votes. They can’t match or contest against me in Imo State not to talk of Orlu zone,” Okorocha added.

“I asked the  Resident Electoral Commissioner here to quickly correct these anomalies. The returning officer is a bloody liar who may be acting a script.”

Mr Salihu Adamu Musa, INEC Electoral Officer in Bokkos Local Government of Plateau, on Monday apologised over the “shameful” behaviour of the Returning Officer deployed to the area.
“The Returning Officer’s attitude was appalling; he was drunk and couldn’t do anything at all,’’ he said.
Musa was responding to a question raised by APC Collation Officer in Pankshin, Mr Emmanuel Bok, who sought to know why he (Musa), was declaring the results of elections for Bokkos, instead of the Returning Officer, as stipulated by law.
Musa, in his explanation, told the party agents, observers and INEC officials that the Returning Officer, a university lecturer, was drunk on Sunday and was sacked when he could not perform his duty.
“I took over the job based on instructions from the INEC headquarters in Jos,” Musa explained.
Musa apologised to the election officials on behalf of the electoral body, and promised that the situation would not repeat itself.
Bok, who thanked Musa for the explanation, said that he had intended to reject the result because they were not presented by the officer designated to do so.
“If not for the explanation you gave to us, I would not have accepted the results until we see the Returning Officer.
“But, if that was what happened, then it is very unfortunate and bad for us in our journey toward deepening out democracy,” he said.
In his reaction, Mr Mason Mahli, PDP Collation Officer in the local government, appealed to INEC to always ensure that only reputable people were recruited to assist it in such crucial assignments.
“INEC must always look for credible persons for serious national assignments like this. Electoral duties are sacred assignments that must be handled seriously and with utter commitment,” he stated.
Mr Jonathan Mawuyau, another APC Collation Officer and former justice commissioner in Plateau, who also reacted to the removal of the Returning Officer, regretted the “very bitter experience” elections officials had with the sacked official.
“The officer came to the collation centre drunk. On Sunday, we waited for his arrival up to 2.00 p.m., but when he later arrived and took his seat, he started dozing off before the very eyes of everybody in the hall.
“Shortly after, he woke up and excused us to go ease himself, but the next thing we heard was that he had driven away. He was later accosted and brought back.
“In fact, I had to apologise on his behalf. The official was so drunk that he could not do the Job,” Mawuyau explained.
Mrs. Joan Arabs, INEC official from the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, in her response, assured the party agents, journalists and observers, who had gathered at the senatorial collation centre in Pankshin, that the mistake would not be repeated.
“We have noted this mistake and want to assure you that we will correct it,” she said.

The Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, failed to hold his polling unit in Yola, Adamawa state on Saturday as he lost it to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The official count of ballots at Ajiya unit 02 in Gwadabawa Ward of Yola North Local Government Area gave Atiku 167 votes, while Buhari got 186 votes, out of the 365 votes cast at the centre.
The Assistant Presiding Officer, Mr Abdulrasheed Mohammed, who announced the results, said a total of 365 votes were cast for the presidential election at the unit.
Similarly, the Senatorial candidate and House of Representatives candidates of the APC defeated their PDP counterparts at the unit.
Aishatu Dahiru the senatorial candidate of APC, got 185 votes to defeat Mohammed Chubado of PDP who got 120 votes, while APC House of Representative candidate scored 145 votes to defeat his PDP counterpart who got 121 votes.
At Lamido’s Palace polling unit 010, Atiku also lost to Buhari.
He polled 138 votes, while Buhari got 228 votes, according to INEC presiding officer Idris Yunusa.
The results are not surprising to political observers. President Buhari won Adamawa in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015. In 2007, Atiku was on the ballot for ACN, and he still lost the state to Buhari.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State on Friday asked the Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Prof Abdulganiyu Raji to produce 6,053 missing ballot papers for the House of Representatives election in Imeko – Afon local government area of the state.

In a petition addressed to Raji, the party officials alleged that out of 62,853 ballot papers meant for election in the area, 6,053 ballot papers are missing.

The petition was jointly signed by ADC candidate for Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, Jimoh Aremu Olaifa, ADC Chairman in the LG, Kayode Elegbede and the party’s agent, Ben Ibikunle.

They expressed surprise, however, that the same 62,853 ballot papers meant for Presidential and Senatorial in the council were complete.

The petitioners asked the REC to produce the missing ballots “immediately to safeguard the credibility of this election and nip in the bud ongoing speculation that can threaten law and order in the local government.”

The petition partly reads “Records from our agents at the Ogun State INEC office showed that a total of 62,853 ballot papers were released from the state office for Imeko-Afon LG.

“However, at the Imeko-Afon INEC office, only 56,790 ballot papers was physically sighted and counted by our agent, agents of other political parties and security personnel leaving a shortage of 6,053 ballots papers.

“Interestingly, the same number of 62,843 ballot papers released for the Presidential and Senatorial elections was physically sighted and counted by all concerned at the INEC office, Imeko Afon.”

When contacted, the Head of Voters Education and Publicity for INEC in the state, Mrs Adenike Tadese, confirmed that there was shortfall of ballot papers in the council, but said there is no cause for alarm.

“The carton was never tampered with, it was when they got there (Local Government) that they realised that some ballot papers were missing.

“The Electoral Officer had already held stakeholders’ meeting to inform them of what transpired.

“So, there is no shady deal about that. We have already requested for the shortfall, which will be given to us. So, there is no problem about it.”

Twelve presidential candidates have pledged support for President Muhammadu Buhari and have told their supporters to vote the All Progressives Congress on Saturday.
The 12 candidates, also members of the Forum of Presidential Candidates & Political Parties for Good Governance pledged the support at the Aso Villa Thursday, during which President Buhari asked historians and economists to document the 16 years squander-mania and mismanagement by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said there is a compelling reason to do this for the sake of future generations, so that they would not repeat the same mistakes.
“I am overwhelmed by your patriotism”, Buhari told members of the Presidential Forum.
“The least you could do was to deny me votes in your immediate constituencies. However much your people loved me, they would have voted for their own first. I am really overwhelmed by your support,” President Buhari said.
The President told his guests he was glad that Nigerians understood the three fundamentals on which the administration was anchored namely; securing the country, reviving the economy, and fighting corruption.
He listed many achievements in the three focal areas, and declared: “We lost unimaginable revenue in the 16 years of mismanagement of the country by the previous PDP administrations. Look at the state of roads, rail, power, and infrastructure generally, as at 2015, when we came into office. The roads were not done, neither were they even maintained. The number of lives and property lost on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway on a daily basis, for instance, was very sad and tragic. And many other roads like that in the country. If the various administrations had fixed infrastructure, Nigerians would have simply minded their businesses. They wouldn’t bother about who even governs them. But the mismanagement was unparalleled. Our historians and economists should help document it, so that future generations would take note, and not repeat the mistakes.”
President Buhari said after contesting four times, “before God agreed with me in 2015, I had a clear plan of what I wanted to do, and people are now seeing the progress we are making.”
Chairman of the Forum, Shitu Mohammed Kabir, MON, of Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA), said they decided to throw in their lots with President Buhari because of advances made in security, economy, fighting corruption, infrastructural development, agricultural revolution, and many others.
According to Kabir, “Nigerian political landscape is taking a new dimension…As a group of political parties committed to the realisation of a new Nigeria, we identify with these laudable feats of the President, which are in proximity with ours, as exemplified in our manifestoes. We, therefore, wish to support President Buhari’s candidacy in the coming election, and direct all our teeming members across the length and breadth of Nigeria to go out in their numbers, to vote for APC candidates, Muhammadu Buhari/Yemi Osinbajo, in the coming election.”

The Federal Government of Nigeria has just given a directive for immediate payment of February salaries to workers.

It stated that this is to financially enable workers wishing to travel to vote in Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly election to do so.
Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, while briefing journalists at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister said the payment of salaries to federal workers already commenced on Tuesday, which is “to ease the burden off civil servants planning to travel for the elections”.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), postponed the presidential and National Assembly election billed for February 16 to February 23.

According to reports, many Nigerians who had travelled to their voting destinations were forced to return to their bases and there have been ruminations among the populace that many will not return to vote.

Mohammed said the FEC which held today discussed the issue and reviewed some of the palliatives put in place to help people return to cast their votes.

He said the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), with a membership of about 50,000, “(which) controls 80 per cent of the petroleum sector distribution has agreed to cushion the effect of the postponement by reducing the price of pump price of petrol from N145 to 140 from February 21 to 25th.”

The minister said the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), which has about 2 million members and operates motor parks in all the 774 local government areas across the country, has offered to provide discount to travellers using their motor parks.

“All these (are) aimed at encouraging voters who might have been disenfranchised by the postponement,” he said.

The information minister also said as part of the incentives, two airlines, Aero contractors and Arik Air, are offering discounted fares to passengers.

He said while Aero is offering a 50 per cent discount to all travellers who present their Permanent Voters Card (PVC), at point of purchase, Arik has slashed the price of their tickets to N16,000 to all destinations across the country from February 18 to March 11, 2019.

Google has acknowledged that it made an error in not disclosing that one of its home alarm products contained a microphone. Product specifications for the Nest Guard, available since 2017, had made no mention of the listening device. But earlier this month, the firm said a software update would make Nest Guard voice-controlled.

On Twitter, concerned Nest owners were told the microphone "has not been used up to this point”. The Nest Guard is one component in the Nest Secure range of home security products. The system includes various sensors that can be monitored remotely by the user Nest Guard is an all-in-one alarm, keypad, and motion sensor but, despite being announced well over a year ago, the word “microphone” was only added to the product’s specification this month. The change coincided with the announcement that it was now compatible with Google Assistant.

In response to criticism, Google said on Tuesday: "The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs. That was an error on our part.”

It added: “The microphone has never been on and is only activated when users specifically enable the option. Security systems often use microphones to provide features that rely on sound sensing. We included the mic on the device so that we can potentially offer additional features to our users in the future, such as the ability to detect broken glass.”

The firm's mea culpa has been accepted as genuine by many company watchers, but some say it still raises significant privacy concerns.

Power outage in Berlin

Tens of thousands of Berlin residents expressed optimism on the restoration of power supply on Wednesday after a mishap at a construction site which plunged households and businesses into darkness.
City officials said a worker on a bridge renovation project accidentally severed a critical power connection around 2 pm (1300 GMT) on Tuesday, cutting off energy to the city’s eastern Koepenick district.
The outage affected more than 30,000 households and 2,000 businesses.
Schools and day care centres in the affected area were expected to stay closed on Wednesday while workers laboured to fix the situation.
“This is a demanding job that is simply going to take a little time. That’s why this blackout is taking significantly longer than previous power outages,’’ said a representative for power company Vatenfall.
Workers were hoping to have the electricity back on or around 3 pm on Wednesday.
Many of the affected buildings rely on electricity for their heat, meaning residents had to tough out a cold night, despite relatively mild daytime February temperatures this week.
Vattenfall said heat could only be restored to the 5,000 affected residences once the power is back on.
There is also a hospital in the affected region.
Emergency crews set up an additional power supply to help the hospital get through the night, while some patients in need of extra care were transferred to other facilities.
Police have been out on affected streets in extra numbers to help ensure order.
Many traffic lights were not working, and tram lines were unable to run without power.
Adding to the problems, neither landline nor mobile phones were working in the region.

Charly Boy

Maverick activist, Charly Boy, has said that he will lead a peaceful protest to the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) if the commission shifts the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.
Charly Boy said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
NAN recalls that Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman, early on Saturday, Feb 16, announced the postponement of the  polls to Feb 23 because of “logistics and operational problems”.
The Commission also shifted the state Governorship and legislative elections as well as Council polls in the Federal Capital Territory from March 2 to March 9.
However, reactions have continued to trail the action of the electoral umpire with many Nigerians, especially political players, calling for the resignation of the chairman.
Charly Boy, the Convener of Ourmumudondo Movement, however, noted that he saw the inability of Nigeria to hold the polls on the scheduled date as ‘an act of God’.
He however warned that any further shift of the elections, especially the presidential poll, would be protested by his group.
“I want to believe that what happened on Saturday is some kind of divine intervention, no matter how much things have become so politicised in our environment.
“However, if there is another postponement, we will go to INEC office to tell us what is happening and whether they are truly independent or not.
“Unless they want to set fire on an already tensed situation in the country, I see no reason why INEC should postpone the elections again.
“Nigerian politicians are very desperate to get and hold unto power and it is part of my nationalistic engagement to speak against mindless political criminality in the polity, “he said.
Charly Boy urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to come out and vote for leaders of their choice in all the elections.
The  68 -year-old activist, who described himself as the ‘President of all frustrated Nigerians’, however, expressed disappointment that the youth failed to rally support for  young candidates to realise the “Not Too Young To Run” dream.
He explained that they had earlier initiated the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together, a coalition of young Nigerians vying for office of president, to produce and rally support for one candidate.
“It is my duty to encourage every young Nigerian to come together to form a formidable front to enable them take power from the recycled leaders.
“It is a bit sad that we could not realise that this time around but I urge people to vote who they like because that will form the basis of how we transit in 2023.
“ APC and PDP  are like  the devil and the deep blue sea and I do not want any youth to vote for them, whether one is lesser evil or not, evil is evil.
“With that, we would know who are popular candidates among the young breed and we shall know and keep records of the number of votes they can muster,” he said.
Charly Boy stressed that young people needed to achieve a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s political history and urged them to be united in common struggle for a better Nigeria.
He lamented that Nigerian youths were being deprived of opportunities in the midst of plenty because of bad leadership over the years.
“There is no need an average Nigerian should be angry, my people need to be free from the grip of bad leadership.
“However, I know that the cycle of evil is winding up and we want to see that it happens finally in 2023,” he said.
