Edo State Police Command has arrested a former police corporal, one Michael Eriarebhe, for alleged armed robbery in the Aduwawa area of the Benin metropolis.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Kokumo, said Eriarebhe had been dismissed for criminal offences pending in court before he was arrested.
“He is on court bail and like a leopard that can never change its spots, was arrested for another criminal activity. This is a vindication that the police are right in the first place to have earlier dismissed him,” Kokumo said.
But the ex-policeman denied the allegation, saying, “I did not engage in robbery. I do not know why they are charging me with robbery. I was taken to court for (allegedly having) canal knowledge (of a female).
“They (police) said that the girl was 17 years old, but the girl was above 17 and she had a baby for me.”
Meanwhile, the police commissioner said three persons were arrested for allegedly threatening to abduct and kill a retired professor, Joshua Aiseku, if he (Aiseku) failed to pay them N5.7m.
Kokumo explained that the suspects, whom he identified as Adamu Aminu, 23; Tamuno Samuel, 19, and Ovie Raymond, had advised the professor, through a text message, to pay the money into a Turkish account in order to have his life spared.
Narrating his role in the alleged act, Adamu, who was said to be the son of Aiseku’s guard, noted that he came up with the idea in order to raise money for his education.
He said, “I came up with the idea of the kidnapping and I decided to involve my friends, Prince Diepriye Samuel. The professor was a good man to me. He has never punished or tortured me before, but I was not that comfortable living with him.
“He was a nice man to me, but my parents were poor and I was not able to raise money to go further in my education after my secondary education. That was why the idea came into my mind.” LR News
