A fake Twitter account purportedly belonging to President Olusegun Obasanjo has conned many Nigerians with a condolence message to D’banj over the death of his son.

Using the handle @Chief_Obasanjo, the account tweeted the message alongside a picture of the former president and the bereaved singer immediately after news of the tragedy broke.

Obasanjo does not have personal social media accounts.

He releases official statements through messages signed by his spokesman, Kehinde Akinyemi.

Unsuspecting Nigerians and a section of the media have, however, been deceived by the fake Twitter account.

“My heart and prayers are with Dapo and his family. No parent should ever have to bury a child. As a parent, it’s the worst thing imaginable. May God give you the fortitude to bear the loss, Dbanj,” the scammers wrote.
Several media platforms including the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) fell prey to the scammers and have reported that Obasanjo condoled D’banj.

D’banj announced the death on Instagram with the message, “Trying Times. But my God is Always and Forever Faithful.”

His wife, Lineo, was said to have been at home when the tragic incident occurred.

The sad incident happened one month after the boy named Daniel celebrated his first birthday.
