Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa (YISHDA), a Non-governmental Organization on Saturday trained no fewer than 50 youths on self-discovery, emotional intelligence and career advancement.
The workshop is part of the NGO’s bi-monthly training for youths tagged Youths Without Boundaries and targeted at inculcating in the youths the ability to discover themselves and advance better in their chosen career.
Speaking at the event, Mr Moses Agbara, Director of Communication YISHDA, said that the event was in partnership with Hip City Hub.
Agbara said the event was focused on self-discovery as a spur to the general effective output of young people in the society.
He mentioned that the pressure for young people to succeed in workplaces, businesses as well as the aspiration to become entrepreneurs required knowledge and assessment of self.
“Leading `self to greatness’ means young people becoming aware of their strengths, weaknesses, talents, inherent skills, passion, and emotions that they could leverage on through self-discovery.
“However, without unlocking the innate capabilities of self, the overall output of an individual becomes questionable which is a reflection of self.
“Self-discovery will therefore help youths manage external pressures, using their natural abilities to stay positive and productive.
“Fifty youths are being trained on leadership capacity and how to become innovative solution providers in their workplaces and communities,’’ he said.
Agbara stressed that the workshop would guide them in choosing appropriate careers based on their talents, skills and passion and also provide relevant skills to thrive in any entrepreneurial or corporate environment.
Speaking, Mr Bassey Bassey Executive Director, Hip City Hub, said the workshop aims at engaging youths from their natural conservative self to become more expressive and adventurous to attain a level of actualization.
“The training is an experiential one because, we realized the eco system in Nigeria is shrinking; some youths are facing a lot of challenges of not being engaged in productive ventures.
“The training is targeted at how society is evolving, the available market they can venture in and how they can develop themselves to fit into the work environment as entrepreneurs, ‘’ Bassey added.
Miss Blessing Achibong, a participant at the training, commended the organisers, saying: “I have come to realize that I need to discover myself to work in the right environment because; ones personality has a role to play in the person becoming successful and function maximally in life.

The U.S. government said in a court filing on Friday that it has the right to detain children and parents caught crossing the U.S. border illegally for the duration of their immigration proceedings.
A 1997 court settlement known as the Flores agreement has generally been interpreted to require the Department of Homeland Security to release illegal immigrant children from custody after 20 days.
But Justice Department lawyers said in the filing in U.S. District Court in California on Friday that they now have no choice but to hold children for as long as it takes to resolve their immigration cases, because of a preliminary injunction issued on Tuesday in a separate immigration case.
That case, brought by the American Civil Liberties Union in San Diego, challenged the recent government policy of separating families in order to detain parents for as long as necessary under President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy.
Since that policy was implemented in May, families have been routinely separated after apprehension. Some 2,000 separated children are currently under government care.
An executive order issued by Trump this month reversed the policy, and the subsequent injunction in San Diego ordered the government to immediately stop separating parents and children and said families must be reunited in 30 days or less.
To comply with the injunction, the government said Friday it “will not separate families but detain families together during the pendency of immigration proceedings.” Cases can sometimes take months or years to resolve.
Under previous administrations, parents and children were often released to pursue immigration claims at liberty in the United States. Trump has decried that so-called catch-and-release policy, and vowed to detain immigration violators.

Boko Haram leader Shekau

Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the terror group Boko Haram,  is said to be weakened by ill health, prompting questions about his ability to lead the militants, the AFP reported on Friday.
The sources said Shekau has a range of conditions that have left him “too weak to be in charge” of the jihadists, whose insurgency has killed at least 20,000 in Nigeria since 2009.
“He has high blood pressure and failing sight from diabetes-related complications,” said one source with close knowledge of the group’s activities.
A senior security source tracking the conflict, who also asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak to the media, described Shekau’s diabetes as “debilitating”.
“He suffers from diminished eyesight from cataracts or glaucoma as a result of diabetes,” he added.
The source with knowledge of Boko Haram’s activities said Shekau and his lieutenants have been in talks this week about his “failing health” and whether he was well enough to lead.
Boko Haram split in mid-2016 over ideological differences.
One faction, headed by Abu-Mus’ab Al-Barnawi, whose father Mohammed Yusuf founded Boko Haram, won the support of the Islamic State group.
Some experts suggested that with Shekau off the scene, the different groups could be reconciled.
Shekau used to appear frequently on video messages from the group, particularly at the height of the conflict, when Boko Haram ran riot across northeast Nigeria, seizing territory.
The Nigerian authorities have claimed Shekau has died or been killed on at least three occasions, and that he has been replaced by a series of lookalikes.
Shekau’s last appearance on camera was in a 14-minute video released on February 6 in which he claimed responsibility for attacks in Borno state capital, Maiduguri, and other towns.
He was previously seen on January 15 in an 11-minute video in which some of the remaining Chibok schoolgirls who were abducted in 2014 vowed never to return to their parents.
Both sources said between February and April last year, Shekau was bed-ridden in Bulayaga, a village in the Konduga area of Borno, near his group’s Sambisa Forest stronghold.
Bulayaga is some 35 kilometres (22 miles) from Maiduguri.
“No-one thought he would survive because he was terribly sick from diabetes and malaria,” said the security source.
Shekau resurfaced in a video published on May 4, 2017, rejecting claims he had been injured in a Nigerian air strike the previous day at the nearby village of Balla.
“I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive,” he said.
But in it, he looked frail and appeared to have difficulty reading from a prepared speech, which he held close to his face in an apparent indication of vision problems.
The August 2016 split caused bitter in-fighting and saw Shekau lose men, territory and weapons.
Barnawi, whose group operates in northern Borno around the shores of Lake Chad, is now seen as “more in charge”, said the source.
Yan St-Pierre, counter-terrorism advisor and head of the Modern Security Consulting Group, said Shekau’s removal would only have a “limited” effect internally and on operations.
“Most terrorist organisations always have a ‘next man up’ planned because leadership could be lost at any time,” he said in emailed comments.
“The myth of Shekau” could also remain as a “galvanising factor” for Boko Haram fighters, he added.
The security source suggested the removal of Shekau “could signal the mending of fences between the two factions”.
“Shekau has been the major wedge to reconciliation between the factions and if he resigns, the prospect of a truce and merger between the factions is high,” he added.
Ryan Cummings, Africa security analyst at the Signal Risk group, agreed the two sides could move closer but also suggested it could trigger a power struggle in the high command.
That “could trigger further violent factionalism”, he added

The Malian headquarters of an anti-terror task force, the G5 Sahel, came under attack on Friday, killing six persons  and leaving many injured, according to a provisional toll.
A suicide bomber tried to penetrate the base at Sevare in central Mali, according to a security source, while a local orange seller, Haoussa Haidara, said “there was a huge blast” followed by gunfire which lasted more than an hour.
It is the first attack on the headquarters of the joint force, set up in 2017 to roll back jihadist insurgents and criminal groups in the vast, unstable Sahel region.
It came three days before a meeting in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott between French President Emmanuel Macron and the heads of the G5 Sahel states to discuss progress made by the force.
Six people were killed in the attack, according to a hospital and a military source, giving an interim toll.
“We transported the bodies and the injured to the hospital, but we don’t know whether some of the injured have died in hospital. There are six dead on the ground,” the military source told AFP.
Some of the injured were transported to Mopti’s Somino Dolo hospital in the regional capital.
Residents in Sevare hid inside their homes, according to Bouba Bathily, a trader who sheltered from the gunfire in his house.
“Assistance came from everywhere, we’re not hearing gunshots at the moment,” Moussa Kalossi, a watchman in a hotel near the camp, told AFP.
The arrival of military support was confirmed by a Malian military source.
Launched with French backing in 2017, the G5 Sahel aims at pooling 5,000 troops from five nations — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.
It was projected to be fully up and running in March, but its deployment has faced delays and equipment worries.
France intervened militarily in Mali in 2013 to help government forces drive Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists out of the north.
But large tracts of the country remain lawless despite a peace accord signed with ethnic Tuareg leaders in mid-2015 aimed at isolating the jihadists. The violence has also spilled over into both Burkina Faso and Niger.
Earlier Friday, French military headquarters said that troops from its so-called Barkhane mission in Mali had killed or captured 15 jihadists on June 22 in a joint operation with local forces.
The clash took place in a woodland area of the Inabelbel region, southeast of Timbuktu, it said in a statement.
A group of about 20 jihadists were attacked using helicopters and jet fighter support after they were spotted by Malian commandos, it said.

He was arraigned on Friday along with one Modupe Adetokunbo, the Director-General of the PDP Campaign Organization in the state during the last general elections.

They were both brought before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on three counts of money laundering to the tune of N500 million.

In the charge, the EFCC‘s Deputy Chief Detective Superintendent, Ekene Iheanacho alleged that Clement Faboyede, Modupe Adetokunbo and others at large had, on or about March 27, 2015, conspired amongst themselves to accept cash payment in the sum of N500million from one Owolanke Micheal, without going through a financial institution.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 1, of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act 1 of 2012) and punishable under section 16(2) of the same Act.

The defence counsel, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, however urged the court to admit the defendants to bail.

Justice Saliu Saidu has asked him to file a formal application for bail and ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody till then.

More than 2,000 people living with HIV in Kano and Katsina States are expected to benefit from an initiative by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) in collaboration with the Association of Community Pharmacists in Nigeria (ACPN) to ease access to HIV medications.
The IHVN Assistant Director, Pharmacy, Mr Yohanna Avong stated this at the launch of the project in Kano on Thursday.
He said with the initiative, adult patients who are stable on HIV medications and not pregnant, could be referred from hospitals to get drug refills from trained community pharmacists of their choice in their communities instead of frequent trips to overcrowded health facilities for drug pick-up.
“Public hospitals that are providing antiretroviral therapy are consistently being congested or they have a high volume of patients.
“The World Health Organization has recommended the use of structures within the community to provide HIV medications.
“Some patients travel very long distances to the hospital and this affects their adherence to treatment and overall well-being,” he said.
Avong explained that over 3, 000 people living with HIV in the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa States took part in the initiative with great success prompting an extension of the program.
“We have discovered that because we are removing the hardship that people go through in order to get drugs at the hospital level, they are doing very well with low viral load.”
Assistant Director of Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria and Head of Kano Branch, S.S Chiroma said that the project was novel one and would benefit both patients and community pharmacists.
“For the patient, the access will increase while for the caregiver, it also gives him the opportunity to have experience in antiretroviral therapy which will lead to better service to the patient.”
Earlier in a welcome address, Director of Public Relations of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, Peter Illya expressed his joy with the initiative saying that the goal was to deliver a HIV free generation to Nigerians.
A Community Pharmacist from Geral-Jo-Calene Pharmacy in Sabon Gari, Kano, Mrs. Agatha Nwachukwu said that the initiative was a welcome development.
“We are happy that community pharmacists are being incorporated into the HIV program. We have now been trained such that a lot of things that we did not know, we now know,” she said.
Abbas Musa from Kainuwa Best Global Pharmacy in Funtua said that he looked forward to the challenge that the job entailed and the opportunity to help people living with HIV in the community.
“It will bring job satisfaction for myself, help impact the patient positively and the community in general.”
NAN reports that the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria was established in 2004 as a local organisation to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in Nigeria through the development of infrastructure, care, prevention, and support for people living with and those affected by the disease.

U.S. aerospace leader Boeing has unveiled its plans for what could be the world’s first hypersonic airliner, capable of flying at five times the speed of sound.
With the average speed of sound put at 1,225km per hour, the hypersonic passenger plane would be travelling at a top speed of over 6,125 km per hour.
The fastest passenger jet in recorded history is the Tupolev TU 144, a supersonic plane developed by the soviets.
Boeing Office complex: as airplane maker plans supersonic passenger jet
It could reach speeds up to 1,510 mph (2,430 km/h). While it was retired from commercial use, the Russian space program still used it for training purposes.
With top speeds exceeding 3,800 miles per hour, the proposed hypersonic passenger jet could shuttle passengers from New York to London, a distance of 3,470 miles (5,585km) in just two hours. flights from New York to London usually take 7 to 8 hours.

The Chicago-based aviation giant revealed the renderings of the aircraft concept Tuesday at the annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Atlanta.
“Humankind has always wanted to go fast,  always wanted to do things faster,” said Kevin Bowcutt, chief scientists of hypersonics at Boeing.
“We are excited about the potential of hypersonic technology to connect the world faster than ever before,” he said.
The concept is still in the early stages of development, as there are key technical challenges that need to be solved, said Boeing spokesperson Brianna Jackson.
She said it is possible that the concept could become a reality in 20 to 30 years.
Boeing has been testing ultra-fast technology for decades, which could be used for both military and commercial applications, according to the company.
Besides Boeing, other companies such as Lockheed Martin and Aerion Corporation are also working to develop hypersonic aircrafts, the CNN reported.
The news Agency of Nigeria reports that the fastest ever jet in recorded history is the North American X-15.
Its top speed is Mach 6.72 (7,274 km or 4,520 miles). The jet was made by the U.S.A.

French President Emmanuel Macron

European Union leaders have reached a deal on steps to tackle migration during all-night talks Friday.
Italy had blocked an agreement until it got more help on the issue but French President Emmanuel hailed a victory for European cooperation.
Italy’s prime minister Giuseppe Conte said his country was “at last”, no longer alone.
Italy had turned away migrant boats in recent weeks, sparking a fresh political row three years after the bloc faced its biggest-ever migration crisis.
After the deal was reached Macron said European cooperation had won the day.
“There’s a will to better protect the borders, to strengthen the rules of reception,” he said.
The 28 leaders agreed to consider setting up “disembarkation platforms” outside the bloc, most probably in north Africa, in a bid to discourage migrants boarding EU-bound smuggler boats.
Member countries could set up migrant processing centres — but only on a voluntary basis — to determine whether to admit arrivals as refugees or turn them away as “economic migrants”.
The summit also offered a concession to German Chancellor Merkel, who faces a rebellion from within her own coalition government, with moves to stop migrants registered in Italy and other EU countries from moving to Germany.
“After intensive discussion on what is perhaps the most challenging issue for the European Union, it is a good message that we have adopted a joint text,” Merkel said.
She had earlier warned that “migration could end up determining Europe’s destiny” if it failed to reach an agreement.
As the summit got underway, EU president Donald Tusk issued a fresh warning on the need for action on migration to stave off rising populism and authoritarianism, saying that “the stakes are high and time is short”.
This applies to eastern European countries, in particular Hungary and Poland which are reticient to share the burden of migrant quotas to help allieviate southern nations.

A 35 year old Nigerian on Thursday said he wants to become the country’s youngest presidential candidate, taking advantage of a newly passed law reducing age limits for political office.

“Chike Ukaegbu announced his candidacy for President of Nigeria. A country with over 60 percent of the population between the ages of 18 and 35,” his publicist said in a statement.

“At the age of 35, Chike aspires to become the youngest civilian president of the youthful African nation.”

Ukaegbu, described as a “technology entrepreneur” who lives in New York, is originally from Owerri, in the southern Nigerian State of Imo.

He told AFP he was not yet affiliated to any particular party “but will be choosing from one of the current 68 political parties in the coming weeks”.

“We are down to five that we are still evaluating before we decide,” he added in an email.

Ukaegbu is only able to declare his candidacy because last month President Muhammadu Buhari signed the “Not Too Young To Run” bill into law.

The new legislation lowers the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35, state governors and senators from 35 to 30, and national and state assembly members now at 25.

It aims to increase the participation of young people in politics, which has been dominated for decades by an ageing elite.

Former military ruler Buhari, who is 75, has said he wants to contest for a second, four-year term of office.

But he has been under intense pressure to stand down on age and health grounds, after he spent several months in a London hospital last year being treated for an undisclosed ailment.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise Mr Adams Oshiomhole as the new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said this on Wednesday at a meeting with party leaders from Kogi State at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

He claimed that the former Edo State governor cannot be recognised by the electoral umpire because his emergence by affirmation was in violation of the democratic requirements of direct voting by delegates.

Ologbondiyan also accused the governors elected on the platform of the APC of diverting monies belonging to their states to fund the party’s national convention which held over the weekend.

‘World’s Poverty Capital’

He then called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to commence an investigation into the matter, saying about N3.6 billion was allegedly diverted.

“It is unimaginable that while Nigerians are suffering untold economic hardship, including unpaid salaries, due to the misrule of the APC, governors elected on the platform of the APC diverted N150 million each, amounting to a humongous N3.6 billion to fund their wasteful national convention in Abuja,” the PDP spokesman claimed in a statement.

“Recently, the Brooking Report shows that under President (Muhammadu) Buhari and APC governors, millions of Nigerians are daily dropping below poverty line. According to the report, Nigeria under Buhari has become poverty capital of the world.

“There are hunger and starvation everywhere, yet the APC stole N3.6 billion from public coffers to fund its national convention,” he added, although the allegations have not been proven to be true.

Ologbondiyan further accused the ruling party of corruption, claiming petitions against its national chairman at the EFCC were in the public domain.

According to him, the PDP restates its demand that the EFCC immediately commence an investigation into the said petitions.

The opposition party spokesman noted that failure to do so, the agency would have no ground to continue to arrest, investigate and arraign other Nigerians on allegations of corruption.

The Nigeria Customs Service has impounded a trailer load of tramadol and cannabis sativa along the Lagos-Benin expressway.

The seizure was made by men of the Customs Federal Operations Unit, Zone C, in line with the Federal Government’s onslaught on the ban on tramadol and other heinous drugs in the country.

Zonal Controller of FOU Zone C, Abdulkadir Azarema, disclosed this to reporters on Thursday at the Command Headquarters in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

He vowed that customs would sustain intensified and intelligent operations against smugglers and tax evaders, to tackle illegal banned goods importation, revenue leakages, and economic sabotage.

Mr Azarema revealed that the agency also impounded exotic vehicles, a trailer load of rice, used auto parts, and household items with total duty pad value of over N900 million.

He advised those engaging in the illegal activities to quit such business, saying it is not in the economic interest of the country.

A fuel-laden tanker has exploded along the Otedola Bridge axis of Berger in Lagos with the blaze engulfing at least 30 other vehicles.

The tanker was heading out of Lagos towards the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the crash occurred, causing panic and fear.

Many people were feared trapped in their cars and killed in the blaze, while many others sustained burns.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, confirmed to Channels Television that rescue officials have been able to retrieve nine bodies from the scene of the fire so far.

Eyewitnesses, however, said the death toll might be higher as many people were trapped in their cars with rescue officials still working at the scene.

The fuel-laden tanker lost control, fell over and exploded.

“I saw the tanker reversing and before we could know it, the tanker fell down and started burning,” a witness said a tricycle rider who was close to the tanker.

He added that it took the grace of God for him to escape the fire with his tricycle.

As the fire spread, many drivers had to abandon their vehicles and flee as firefighters tried to battle the raging blaze.

Traffic was stopped on both sides of the road as emergency officials battled to put out the fire and attend to those affected.

Although the fire has been put out by the officials, the road remains closed with rescue officials still working on the scene.
