Angelo Ogbonna

Inter Milan want Angelo Ogbonna from West Ham and they could use Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozovic as a makeweight to make a deal possible.

Inter has been interested in many Premier League centre backs this summer but the Italian giants is keen on Ogbonna.

Although Ogbonna doesn’t want to leave and there have been no reports of West Ham wanting to sell the Italian, Inter really want a centre back, meaning they could sacrifice one of their midfielders to sign him.

Ogbonna joined West Ham from Inter Milan’s title rivals, Juventus, in 2015 for £9m, scoring one goal for The Hammers, which came in the dying embers of their FA Cup tie replay at home to Liverpool in extra-time.

The 29-year-old spent the last half of last season on the sidelines with a knee injury, which he played through for West Ham in the first half of the season, before the club signed Jose Fonte in January.

The Police Service Commission has invited Senator Isah Misau, Chairman Senate Committee on Navy, to appear before its Special Panel investigating allegations of special promotions in the Nigeria Police Force.

The senator is expected to appear before the panel on September 6.
The News Agency of Nigeria the Nigeria Police Force on August 27, declared Misau a deserter and accused him of carrying a forged retirement letter.

NAN also recalls that Misau had, in series of interviews with newsmen, accused the Inspector General of Police of taking bribe to post police officers as well as diverting money paid by private companies for police duties.

The Head, Press and Public Relations of the commission, Ikechukwu Ani, announced in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, that the invitation letter was signed by the Chairman of the Special Panel, retired Justice O. Adekeye.

He said that the immediate issue for investigation was the genuineness or otherwise of the two letters of retirement supposed to have emanated from the commission.

He said that the commission received correspondence from the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Panel on August 24 relating to Misau’s retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.

Ani said: “The Police Service Commission, the only organ saddled with the statutory responsibility of issuing letters of retirement to all Police Officers except the IGP, has a vital role to play in determining the authenticity of this letter."

He said Misau was to appear before the panel with the original copy of his letter of retirement for authentication.

Acting EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says some of its officials are currently being prosecuted for corruption in various courts across the country.

The Acting Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, disclosed this at an interactive session with Editors in Abuja on Wednesday.

Magu, who did not immediately give the number of the affected officials, said he would not condone any act of corruption in the agency.

He said: “Recently, we had to discharge about nine cadet officers because they have problem with their certificates from various institutions.

“We are also prosecuting a lot of officers. Some of them are already in court.
“There is a way you can help us. Just like you can help us with information regarding corrupt practices outside the EFCC, and proceeds of corruption, you can also assist in giving us the information.

“But, I assure you, I do not tolerate, I won’t condone any act of corruption in the EFCC.
“I cannot be everywhere but I am telling you I don’t spare any allegation no matter how little, we make sure we investigate.

“No allegation against the EFCC personnel is left uninvestigated. Even if there is allegation against me, we will refer it to the appropriate authority to investigate.’’

The EFCC boss said that the ongoing anti-corruption war was getting tougher, saying the fight had never been this tough in the several years he had spent in the battle.

He reiterated his call for concerted efforts by all stakeholders, especially the media, in the fight.

Magu said: “Nobody will claim ownership, nobody has a better knowledge than the other person, nobody has a monopoly of knowledge in the fight against corruption.

“We need everybody on board now that the fight against corruption is getting tougher. I have been in this business for a very long time; it has never been this tough like now.

“Some of us feel that it is our generation that caused corruption. So, we have a responsibility to clear the debt.
“Please don’t get tired because it is about Nigeria, it is not about individuals. All of us have a responsibility to God Almighty to fight corruption.

“Let us double our efforts. From the way we are going, they have already failed. It is almost half won, but we must sustain the momentum.’’

Kwara Harmony Holdings on Tuesday paid N1.5 million out of the N3.7 million as compensation to owners of 25 hectares of customary lands acquired by the State Government 11 years ago.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 25 hectares of land was acquired for the cultivation of grains at Ogbondoroko in the Asa Local Government Area of the state.

Presenting the cheque to the representatives of the customary land owners in Ilorin, the Director-General of the Bureau of Lands, Alhaji Ibrahim Salman, expressed government’s apologies for the delay in the payment of the compensation.

Salman attributed the delay to the transfer of the acquired land to the various Ministries in the state, before the Kwara Harmony Holdings acquired it in 2013.

Salman assured the land owners that the Kwara Harmony Holdings will pay the outstanding balance of N1.7m within two months.

Responding on behalf of the customary land owners, Alhaji Usman Olosun, appealed to the state government to find another piece of land for the erection of a mosque and a Quranic school which have been demolished on the land.

US President & National Security Adviser

US President, Donald Trump, said all options to respond to North Korea were on the table after Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile over Japan earlier on Tuesday.

“The world has received North Korea’s latest message loud and clear. This regime has signaled its contempt for its neighbours, for all members of the UN, and for minimum standards of acceptable international behaviour,” Trump said in the statement released by the White House.

He further stated: “Threatening and destabilising actions only increase the North Korean regime’s isolation in the region and among all nations of the world.

“All options are on the table.”
Earlier, North Korea accused the United States of driving the Korean peninsula towards “an extreme level of explosion” and declared that it was justified in responding with “tough counter-measures”.

The combative statement came hours North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan’s northern Hokkaido island into the sea, drawing a sharp reaction from Japan, the United States, South Korea and other states.

Han Tae Song, North Korea’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, did not explicitly refer to his country’s latest test.
He said US “pressure and provocative acts” would only give his country grounds to take unspecified measures.

“It is an undeniable fact that the U.S. is driving the situation of the Korean peninsula towards an extreme level of explosion by deploying huge strategic assets around the peninsula, by conducting a series of nuclear war drills and maintaining nuclear freeze and blackmail for over half a century,” Han told the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

Fears have grown over North Korea’s development of missiles and nuclear weapons since Pyongyang test-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles in July.

Those fears worsened after Trump warned that North Korea would face “fire and fury” if it threatened the United States.

Joint US-South Korea military drills, currently taking place on the peninsula, are part of “long-standing U.S. hostile policy” towards the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Han said.

He added:  “Now that the U.S. has openly declared its hostile intention towards the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, by waging aggressive joint military exercises in spite of repeated warnings, my country has every reason to respond with tough counter-measures as an exercise of its right to self-defense.

“And the U.S. should be wholly responsible for the catastrophic consequences it will entail.”
U.S. disarmament ambassador, Robert Wood, speaking to reporters, said that North Korea’s test was “another provocation” and “big concern” to be discussed by the UN Security Council later in the day.

Wood said: “My country and I know a number of other countries are going to continue to demand that North Korea ends these provocative acts and take a different path.

“The United States has “an iron-clad commitment to its allies.”
Both Wood and South Korea’s envoy Kim Inchul called for Pyongyang to resume talks on giving up its nuclear arsenal.

Kim said: “Denuclearisation is the only way forward to guarantee security and economic viability instead of continuing with provocations which are unacceptable.”

Japan’s envoy, Nobushige Takamizawa, condemned the missile test noting it also posed a danger to aviation and navigation.

The female hostel in the Jos campus of the Plateau State Polytechnic was on Monday completely burnt down by fire.

The fire, which started around 8.30am, raged on till 11.44am, throwing the entire school into confusion as students and staffers scurried to safety with some bold students making frantic but fruitless efforts to quench the inferno.

The News Agency of Nigeria, however, reports that no life was lost in the fire that gutted everything in the hostel.

“Many students had left for lectures when the fire started; no one was around to remove anything from the burning hostel,” Yusuf Ade, a security man, told NAN.

NAN also reports that the fire service personnel arrived the scene around 11.20 when the hostel had been brought down.

Dauda Gyemang, the Rector of the institution, who described the incident as “shocking”, attributed it to a gas explosion which occurred “at about 8.30am.”

Gyemang added: “We thank God that no life was lost in the inferno, but nothing was rescued.”
He said that the incident was “a great loss” to the institution.

He said: “We shall move the students to another place because the building is completely burnt down. It is very devastating.”

The Rector wondered why the students were keeping cooking gas in the hostel, saying that it was against the school’s regulations.

He said: “The problem here is that students do not adhere to the institution’s regulations; they are not supposed to be cooking in the hostels.”

Gyemang said that the burnt building would be rehabilitated “in no distant time”, and urged the students to remain calm.

The hostel’s Representative, Christiana Azi, told NAN that students lost everything “including original copies of their credentials, clothes, food stuffs and other valuables”.

Azi added: “The incident is shocking and devastating. It will be very difficult to recover from it.”

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo

The Federal Government has issued another directive to its Ministries, Departments and Agencies to immediately resume the conduct of the Focus Workshop on the Operationalization of the Executive Order No. 001, 2017 on the Promotion of Transparency and Efficiency in the Business Environment beginning from August 30, 2017 or be sanctioned.

This was contained in a circular, titled: “Resumption of the conduct of the Focus Workshop on the Operationalization of the Executive Order No. 001, 2017 on the Promotion of Transparency and Efficiency in the Business Environment,” signed by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita.

The circular said the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, gave the directive following the failure of the MDAs to ensure participation of the five-member Implementation Team at eight of the series of Focus Workshop held from July 5 to 13, 2017 by the MDAs.

According to Oyo-Ita, the lukewarm attitude to the policy directive of Government by assigned MDAs, which recorded average attendance of 23 per cent of the expected invited participants, compelled the abrupt suspension of the workshop.

The Head of Service emphasized that attendance of the Focus Workshop by members of the Implementation Team on the Executive Order No. 001 is mandatory and that failure to attend will be construed as willful attempt to frustrate the Presidential directive and shall be visited with stern reprimand.

She said that MDAs are required to prior to the workshop submit their Operationalization Plan to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation through the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Common Services Office and are equally expected to log onto the website of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation at www.ohcsf.gov.ng to ensure attendance of the workshop on their scheduled date.

Oyo-Ita said the implementation team of the MDAs will be required to make presentations of the highlights of their OP during the workshop.

The circular further directed all Permanent Secretaries, Heads of Extra-Ministerial Departments and Agencies to ensure strict compliance with the order to attend the workshop, which is expected to hold at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria every Wednesdays and Thursdays from August 30, 2017 till September 20, 2017 at 10am.

It will be recalled that the Federal Government had earlier issued directives to the MDAs on the full implementation of the Executive Order 001 2017 on the Promotion of Transparency and Efficiency in the Business Environment or be sanctioned.

Misau is accused by police of being a lying ex-officer who did not leave the force properly. The police wants Nigerian Senate to release the lawmaker for questioning in order to answer for allegations of forgery.

The Force says Misau does not qualify to be a senator because his name is still on the police register

Senator Isa Hamman Misau representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly has been declared wanted for questioning by the Nigeria Police Force.

Reports say the police want to speak with Misau over alleged forgery and desertion from the force among other things.

Misau’s trouble began after he told National Assembly Correspondents on Friday, August 25 that there is huge corruption in the police involving payments for special security services to corporate bodies, oil firms and highly placed citizens in the country.

The lawmaker also accused Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris of being involved in high-level extortion.

But police spokesman Jimoh Moshood says Misau’s accusations are all false.
Moshood said: “His real name in the Police is DSP Mohammed Isa Hamman, with Police number AP No. 57300.
He is still a Police Officer and not a Senator because his name is still in the Police Service.

“Senate will do the nation good by asking him to return to the Nigeria Police Force to face disciplinary committee and answer all the charges bordering on serious misconduct, unprofessional wrong doings as earlier contained in our press statement released today.

“We want the public to know that he is not fit and proper to be a Senator of the federal republic of Nigeria; because that purported retirement letter he displayed today was forged.

“All DSP Hamman was saying were cheap blackmail, distraction and deliberate acts to derail investigation.

“So the force will want the Senate Ethics and Privileges committee which we have confidence and trust into see reason to ask him to dress up in his police uniform to come and appear before police disciplinary committee to answer charges against him.

“The IGP has no use to distractions DSP Hamman is instituting before the public, and no matter the position any person is, once he or she runs afoul of the law, he will be made to answer the charges.”

The umbrella Igbo group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, has reacted to the quit notice withdrawal by Arewa youth. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, through its deputy spokesperson, said the organisation was happy with the development.

The quit notice to the Igbos had generated much controversy leading to reprisal quit notices by other groups.

Spokesperson for the group, Chucks Ibegbu said the northern youths made a mistake in giving the quit notice earlier

On Thursday, August 24, the northern youths announced the withdrawal of the quit notice that had caused serious tension in the country for many weeks.

Reacting to the announcement, the Nigerian Tribune reports that the deputy national publicity secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chucks Ibegbu, commended the youths for the withdrawal of the notice.

The report said Ibegbu spoke in a telephone interview saying: “The withdrawal of the quit notice is a welcome development.

“I am happy that the Arewa youths have to realise that it was wrong in the first instance for any person or group of persons to issue a quit notice to any group to leave Nigerian territory.

“The Arewa Youths got it wrong ab initio as they have no constitutional right to sack Ndigbo from their area.

“I am also happy that the present administration has said it without any equivocation that every Nigerian is free to live in any part of the country.

“We have to remind ourselves that injustice, marginalisation, among others, led to hate speeches and restiveness in the land.

“The present administration should try as much as possible to address the perceived political imbalance to stem further agitation across the country,” he said.

CACOL Signing of Extradition Treaty with UAE and Other Agreements, says it will assist greatly in the anti-corrupion war

The Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL has described as hugely commendable, the signing of an extradition treaty with the United Arab Emirates, UAE and agreements with some other countries.”

The Centre’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran said “the signing is auspicious and timely with the background of an expedient need to re-invigorate the anti-corruption drive; it will improve inter-border cooperation among the countries which will enhance their task of ensure the security of lives and property.”

He hailed the extradition treaty, saying it would assist the anti-corruption agencies, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to trace looted funds stashed in Dubai and extradite the looter to Nigeria to face prosecution.
Stating that a striking example which easily highlights the significance of the signing of the treaty on extradition with UAE is the case of a former governor of Delta State, Mr. James Ibori, he said “we must recall that the man decided to escape to Dubai when the EFCC with active collaboration of other law enforcement agencies were closing-in on him to face prosecution for corruption crimes in Nigeria because there was no extradition treaty between Nigeria and the UAE.
However, unknown to Ibori, there was such treaty between the UAE and the UK, which as of then in search of the former governor. He was thereafter extradited to the UK where he was prosecuted and convicted on corruption charges.”

Adeniran said, “The signing of the treaty is so appropriate. Remember, that the former governor of Delta State escaped to his hometown in Oghara in Delta State when law enforcement agencies were looking for him. He went through the waterways and landed in Dubai. The reason why the authorities of the UAE could not extradite him directly to Nigeria was because there was no Mutual Legal Assistance between the country and Nigeria.

“So, he chose to go to the UAE because of the absence of any Mutual Legal Assistance between the UAE and Nigeria. But he forgot or didn’t think it wise to know that there was Mutual Legal Assistance between the UAE and the United Kingdom. That was why the UK was able to request his extradition from the UAE to the UK and the rest is history.”

“If you look around, that is why most of Nigerian looters have properties in Dubai. So it is fashionable for looters to keep their loot in Dubai and tie it down there with properties. The treaty will now assist the EFCC to trace looted funds and seek assistance from the UAE for the extradition of the concerned persons when necessary. It will help the fight against corruption.”

Several politically exposed persons are believed to be hiding in Dubai while a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke allegedly owns houses in a high-brow area of the city. Even the EFCC, Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB and others will be able to work within a better legal relations which for instance can make unveiling the circumstance surrounding the alleged mansions owned by the serving Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, less cumbersome. With commensurate political will, the treaty can open ‘doors’ and will indeed strengthen anti-graft war in loot recovery and extradition of fugitives”

“As we commend President Muhammadu Buhari for the bold and progressive step as it clearly shows his determination to combat corruption, we hasten to emphasize the quintessence of strengthening institutions, as they are the ones which will ensure the achievements so far endures and built upon as the country progresses.”

“The Federal government must also ensure it perseveres in its efforts to have similar treaties or agreements and other legitimate instruments with the UK, USA and other countries where loots from our country are being hidden. Diezani Alison-Madueke’s extradition as a matter of fact should be on the priority list of fugitives which the FG through its agencies should be pursuing vigorously at present given the plethora of corruption charges she has to answer for.” Adeniran concluded.

The Philippines’ labour department on Friday issued an order banning private companies from demanding female employees to wear high-heeled shoes at work.

According to a labour group that proposed the new directive, the order makes the Philippines the first country in Asia to ban the mandatory wearing of high heels in the workplace.

“We hope that the regulation will also be copied and applied for the benefit of workers in the entire Asia region,” said Alan Tanjusay, a spokesman for the Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines.

Tajusay added: “With this regulation, millions of Filipino (workers) will now be freed from the bondage of unsafe and dangerous working conditions.”

Labour Secretary, Silvestre Bello, said the guidelines would take effect next month and was based on a study by a task force created following ALU-TUCP’s proposal.

Bello said: “We noticed how sales ladies, for example, look very tired after standing all day in heels,” he said. “You can tell there is a feeling of inconvenience or they are uncomfortable.”

Bello said the department has not received any negative feedback about the order during consultations.
Under the department’s guidelines, companies can no longer require women to wear shoes with heels more than 1 inch in height as part of the dress code at work.

Governor Godwin Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has proffered transnational partnerships between state and non-state actors as the only way to end slavery in all its forms.

Obaseki made the proposition on the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day for the Remembrance of Slave Trade and its Abolition on August 23, 2017, a day set aside by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, to memorialize the Transatlantic slave trade.

Obaseki said that while “the transatlantic trade in human beings ended over 200 years ago, slavery has refused to go away as it still thrives in several other forms, with millions of children, teenagers and even adults, sold daily across the world by human traffickers to greedy masters and mistresses who use them for slave labour and turn them into sex slaves”.

He decried the negative backlash of human trafficking on the society which includes the erosion of age-old progressive values such as hard work, integrity, and self-worth and emphasized that international coalition and partnership is needed to put an end to the dehumanizing practice.

He said: “In Edo State, our administration is committed to the fight against human trafficking as many Edo youths have lost their lives to the illicit trade.
We have set up an Anti-human Trafficking Task-force, to go after human traffickers in the state.”

Obaseki further said that his administration had thrown its weight behind the Federal Government’s plan to extend the whistle-blowing policy to human trafficking.

The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition had its maiden celebration in Haiti on August 23, 1998.
