A Ugandan Disc Jockey,  identified as Jerry Okirwoth, was reportedly killed by concert-goers for playing ‘boring music’.

The DJ who was killed in a disco hall in Nebbi District, Northern Uganda, was a part-time DJ and student at Parombo Secondary School in Uganda.

He was reported to have been killed for failing to play their favourite songs, says an online media platform, Tina! Magazine.

Meanwhile, the Nebbi Resident District Commissioner, William Bob Labeja, who confirmed the incident in a press conference blamed the management of the facility who according to him failed to protect the late disc jockey.

“As the head of security in the district, I will no longer allow any disco operators to conduct their businesses in the sub-county and anybody who defies the directive will be prosecuted.

All disco halls in all sub-counties must be closed because they are causing insecurity and redundancy among the youth,” he said.

In 2014, three Zimbabwean men were charged with murder after assaulting a DJ on Independence Day for playing ‘boring music’.
Elson Samuel Tirivavi, 22, suffered severe head injuries after he was hit with a chair and a bottle in the ensuing fight.

Labour leaders have criticised the Federal Government for the planned increase of the fee to be paid by Nigerians to secure travel document.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Nigerian Immigration Service had announced that the new e-passport, to be valid for 10 years, will cost N70,000 with effect from March 4.

The labour leaders told NAN on Wednesday in Lagos that many workers would not be able to travel abroad unless the fee is reviewed downwards.

The Deputy General Secretary of the United Labour Congress, Mr Chris Onyeka, told NAN that it was insensitive to increase the price of travel documents at a time Nigerians were contending with economic challenges.

”Government finds it difficult to pay N30,000 to workers, but it is easy to increase the cost of getting a passport from N22,000 to N70,000.

“The fact that the NIS has extended the number of years from five to 10 years is not a good reason to triple the cost of the passport.’’

Onyeka pleaded with the NIS to reduce the price to N40,000 or N50,000 to enable the populace to afford the document.

“It will be difficult for Nigerians to travel on the new price and this development will hamper their fundamental human rights.’’

President of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Product Employees, Mr. Olagoke Olatunji, also condemned the new fee, appealing for a downward review.

Olatunji noted that it would take a worker on the current N18, 000 minimum wage up to four months’ salary to be able to acquire a passport with the new price.

Similarly, the TUC in a statement said that it was insensitive on the part of the NIS to hike passport fees at this point in time.

”The congress condemns in its entirety what the NIS has proposed and we may adopt any measure we consider right to ensure that the new international passport does not exceed N50, 000.”

The TUC President, Mr Bobboi Kaigama, and the Secretary of the body, Mr Musa Lawal-Ozigi, in the statement, said that if allowed to scale through, civil servants would save their salaries for three months with the new minimum wage to be able to pay for a passport.

”What about feeding, rent, school fees and other utilities? This will not work. We appeal to the NIS to look into the matter.”

The TUC said that the fee hike would also affect many Nigerians, who had been using their travelling passports for transactions.

Funmi Aragbaye & husband



Popular gospel musician, Funmi Aragbaye’s husband is dead, family sources have said.
Elder Bola Aragbaye reportedly died on Wednesday, aged 77.

A release by Mr. Felix Olasoji said Mr. Aragbaye passed on after a brief illness at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, at about 2:30 pm on Wednesday.

During his lifetime, he worked at the Nigerian Tribune as a journalist under the supervision of ex-Governor of Lagos State Lateef Jakande.

He left Nigerian Tribune in 1967 to join The Sketch Press Limited, where he rose to the position of Editor before a former Governor of Ondo State, late Chief Adekunle Ajasin, appointed him as his Chief Press Secretary in 1981.

The late Elder Aragbaye marked his 77th birthday on November 10, 2018.

He is survived by his wife, a music icon and National President of Gospel Musicians’ Association of Nigeria, Funmi Aragbaye, children, grandchildren and other family members.

He said burial arrangements will be announced later.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Sunday announced promotions for 239 senior police officers and 7,981 inspectors.

Two police commissioners have been elevated to the rank of assistant inspectors- general; while 10 assistant police commissioners are now deputy commissioners.

Twelve police superintendents were promoted to chief superintendents, and 76 deputy police superintendents are now superintendents.

The exercise also saw 139 assistant police superintendents get promoted as deputy superintendents.

Ikechukwu Ani, a spokesperson for the PSC, said in a statement to PREMIUM TIMES that the police regulatory institution also ratified the promotion of 7,981 inspectors, all of whom are products of the last departmental selection board, DSB, to the next rank of assistant superintendents.

The promotions were part of the decisions of the second plenary meeting of the PSC in Wudil, Kano, and presided over by the Musiliu Smith, a retired inspector-general and chairman of the PSC.

Peter Babatunde Ogunyawo and Mohammed Hussein, both commissioners, have now been promoted assistant inspectors-general; while Eusuong James, Ogundele Ayodeji, Abdullahi Shehu, Ajala Ayoola, Ohikere Idris, Alfa Jibrin, Romokere Ibiani, francis Bissong, Akika Augustine and Peter Wagbara, former ACP Operations Delta State Command, were promoted deputy commissioners.

Police superintendents promoted to chief superintendents were Yahaya Yakasai, Simon Odidi, Musa Umaru, Lucky Seibai, Samuel Anele, Moses Iruonagbe, Gambo Ado, Mohammed Bashir, Malam Danladi, Gloria Reuben, Dalhatu Nuru and Godwin Toho.

Felix Okoro, Sunday Okah, Bamidele John Olatona, Adeniyi Victor Coker, Charles Njoku, Kwaruul Yakubu and Olowo Adisa were some of the 79 DSPs promoted to the next rank of SP.

Some of the ASPs promoted DSPs included Fayiwole Oluwadare, Kolawole Olagunju, Alabijah Eche and Timothy Jonathan.

The approval of the promotion of the 239 senior officers and ratification of the 7981 Inspectors to ASP have been conveyed to Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris for implementation in a letter signed by Musa Istifanus, permanent secretary and secretary to the PSC, Mr Ani said.

A middle-aged woman Zainab Ahmed on Tuesday dragged her husband Oare Abdulrazak before a Sharia Court ll sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna over an alleged assault.

The complainant, a resident of Hayin Dan-Bushiya, told the court that Abdulrazak had assaulted her because she refused to exchange greets with her co-wife when they met in the market.
“This is not the first time he has beaten me, in fact, this is the third time. I tried to explain to him what happened but he turned a deaf ear,” she stated.

She also told the court that her husband does not show her love and care whenever he was in her room, praying the court to dissolve the marriage as she was no longer interested in the union.
In his defence, Abdulrazak, who is married to three wives, said he had only beaten her once and had since regretted his actions and apologised to her.
The judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad-Goma after listening to both parties ordered them to present their guardians in court at the next hearing so as to find a solution to the problem.

He thereafter adjourned the case to February 11.
